CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Travis (Robert De Niro) eats breakfast with Iris (Jodie Foster) at a diner and thoughtfully gives her advice about her life.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"All the animals come out at night" -- and one of them is a cabby about to snap. In Martin Scorsese's classic 1970s drama, insomniac ex-Marine Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works the nightshift, driving his cab throughout decaying mid-'70s New York City, wishing for a "real rain" to wash the "scum" off the neon-lit streets. Chronically alone, Travis cannot connect with anyone, not even with such other cabbies as blowhard Wizard (Peter Boyle). He becomes infatuated with vapid blonde presidential campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), who agrees to a date and then spurns Travis when he cluelessly takes her to a porno movie. After an encounter with a malevolent fare (played by Scorsese), the increasingly paranoid Travis begins to condition (and arm) himself for his imagined destiny, a mission that mutates from assassinating Betsy's candidate, Charles Palatine (Leonard Harris), to violently "saving" teen hooker Iris (Jodie Foster) from her pimp, Sport (Harvey Keitel). Travis' bloodbath turns him into a media hero; but has it truly calmed his mind? Written by Paul Schrader, Taxi Driver is an homage to and reworking of cinematic influences, a study of individual psychosis, and an acute diagnosis of the latently violent, media-fixated Vietnam era. Scorsese and Schrader structure Travis' mission to save Iris as a film noir version of John Ford's late Western The Searchers (1956), aligning Travis with a mythology of American heroism while exposing that myth's obsessively violent underpinnings. Yet Travis' military record and assassination attempt, as well as Palatine's political platitudes, also ground Taxi Driver in its historical moment of American in the 1970s. Employing such techniques as Godardian jump cuts and ellipses, expressive camera moves and angles, and garish colors, all punctuated by Bernard Herrmann's eerie final score (finished the day he died), Scorsese presents a Manhattan skewed through Travis' point-of-view, where De Niro's now-famous "You talkin' to me" improv becomes one more sign of Travis' madness. Shot during a New York summer heat wave and garbage strike, Taxi Driver got into trouble with the MPAA for its violence. Scorsese desaturated the color in the final shoot-out and got an R, and Taxi Driver surprised its unenthusiastic studio by becoming a box-office hit. Released in the Bicentennial year, after Vietnam, Watergate, and attention-getting attempts on President Ford's life, Taxi Driver's intense portrait of a man and a society unhinged spoke resonantly to the mid-'70s audience -- too resonantly in the case of attempted Reagan assassin and Foster fan John W. Hinckley. Taxi Driver went on to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but it lost the Best Picture Oscar to the more comforting Rocky. Anchored by De Niro's disturbing embodiment of "God's lonely man," Taxi Driver remains a striking milestone of both Scorsese's career and 1970s Hollywood.

Sugar over jelly. I love that little detail... it shows that she's still a kid at heart.
@rgtrooper13 What?
@@MultiScarface7 Ignore the pedo remark, it's trying to get a reaction.
more like she's a heavy junkie - they crave sugar
IanBFootage in actuality she did it because in real life the girl she is seen walking with in the movie did it. The girl she was walking with was a heroin/cocaine addict in real life and the sugar was a way to add an energy kick when she wasn’t using.
Best film of all time. Not the flashiest, the most expensive, or even the most well made, but by far the best. Robert De Niro and all the other actors made this film, it's no wonder this film what was skyrocketed Robert De Niro into household name level fame.
Jesus, the raw talent of a young Jodi Foster is just incredible. The ease in front of the camera, the nuance of her performance, the focus of being in character. Just wow.
Looks like she is not amateur especially in front of DeNiro
you mean like being real human being? yes this is rare in hollywood in there days...
I saw her in an interview, and she said that Scorsese and Deniro really took her under their wing. She told them that there had to be more than just memorizing lines and being yourself, at which point Scorsese asked her many questions about Iris, detailed questions on everything about her, and Foster said before she realized it, she had enhanced and created Iris on her own. Then, Deniro, during rehearsals and takes, would throw curve balls at her by adlibs which she said enhanced her even more, by forcing her to bring her character to yet another level. The result by the three of them, is pretty brilliant, especially in his scene.
She was a child prodigy so that's one reason as well
Keep in mind too that by this time, Jodie Foster was already something of a vet in front of the camera. Checking her IMDB credits, she had done a lot of TV and movie work prior to Taxi Driver, and only got better and better.
The best acting in a movie. No drama or crying. Just a natural, realistic conversation.
INDEED
Then i guess everyone is a great actor lol

One of the greatest movies ever.
And one of the greatest performances ever by De Niro ...
I guess the scene didn't require crying
This conversation has no purpose dave.
She is so raw and real. undeniable acting ability.
Still😳
I love the way Travis talks to Iris in this clip. The contrast between how they see the world is readily apparent. She's spouting off some childish nonsense about how her pimp could never kill someone because he's a Libra, and that they get along so well because they're both Libras. Travis has better labels for him. "Killer" and "dope-shooter," to be precise. Iris is a child, and she has created a child's fantasy in her mind about the world around her. That's why she has the sunglasses on in this scene, because she's blind. She cannot see the world around her. Travis sees the world for what it is, and he tells it to her straight, no sugar-coating.
The problem is that Travis doesn't realize how to reach her, because of his fundamental inability to connect with other human beings. People who think the movie is about how bad crime is and how we need vigilantes are missing the point. The movie is about *alienation*. Travis is searching for a way to be a human being, to connect to others and to *matter*. He keeps failing miserably though.
nfinn42 Well said friendo.
***** I don't know about you but I prefer Travis' approach in changing the world compared to that of, say, the U.N. At least his is more realistic, not rooted from some childish fantasy about every skin and color holding hands singing 'Kumaya My Lord', That ain't reality, and Palestine and Israel sure as hell will never be at peace.
Marshall Banana Woah, dude. Take your meds, or a break from the intertubes. Seriously, you're trippin'.
It's just RUclips comments. People talking about moving pictures on computer screens. *Chill the fuck out*. :)
Travis is no vigilante hero for sure, but he at least has a much better understanding than Iris. Travis has put up with all the shit in the world constantly, and is just damn sick of it.

Robert DeNiro took Jodie Foster to this diner many times for breakfast, etc., while they were shooting. They began just by chatting about themselves, then as time went on he started incorporating bits of the dialogue into their visits. Then they would improvise, and go back to the dialogue. It was a very shrewd thing for him to do, working with a child actor who didn't have as strong a technique as he did...and maybe hadn't studied the "make it real" Method he had, as a stage actor in New York.
+Nurse Grace Spielberg does stuff like that when working with child actors as well.

If I'm not mistaken. Jodie Foster was nominated for an Oscar Best Supporting Actress. She already had skills coming in to this role. Even as a young actress.
The most touching scene in Taxi Driver. They are like father & daughter. 😊

Jodie IS considered an acting wunderkind.
She is a real life prodigy
Foster's IQ: 132

How the hell is Jodie Foster acting THIS damn superbly at 12 years old?! My daughter just turned 12, I can't imagine ANY 12 year olds these days acting in such a mature role with such talent and ease. Surreal.
She was a child actor and was ALWAYS primo with acting. No matter what character she played. She's a natural talent. She always loved school and did very well. The same with college. She had a boatload of friends and people always wanted to be around her. Some people are blessed that way. I don't know much about her personal life but I hope she's happy.
I believe she was 14 when that scene was shot, but she had previous acting experience. I'm convinced that success in feature films depends on two key skills: surviving between shots (troupe politics); and the ability to deliver like a news reporter in a hurricane. If an actor can do that, then the director can get enough takes to put a scene together.

I love that line. “I’m not square, you’re the one who’s square!” For as batshit Travis is and becomes, he’s right. The one’s who rebel in such self-destructive and harmful ways are the ones who are ‘square’- they’re just like everyone else. To not be ‘square’ is to be kind, noble, virtuous- that’s real the rebellion. Granted, Travis is a hypocrite in this, but at least he is right about it in this context. Foster was into skateboarding in her youth. Active kids have a very active metabolism. Sedentary adults do not...
Exercise does lower blood sugar levels a lot. That's why people with diabetes are told to exercise regularly....
KronnangDunn You realize that Foster was doing that in the scene because the real-life hooker who the film was consulting with did that. She was trying to be "in character". I doubt she ate like that in reality.
HA!! What about the scene with Travis watching TV while eating a bowl of shredded light bread, with milk, honey and sugar? Or, was the sugar really cocaine? Maybe that's why he didn't appear to be in pain when he got shot later. LOL!! ;)
Greg Woodie Really.I thought he poured Bourbon or whiskey on it after the sugar?
johnstearne68 Actually, I did some checking on that and I think you're right.
This is the probably the most heartbreaking scene I remember from any film, because of how unable Travis is to really help Iris, and because of how unable Iris is to even conceive of needing help when she’s in the most despicable and unspeakably evil situation a person can be in.
she's brainwashed by the low class of society.

Travis's interactions with Iris in this scene are probably his most human and rational moments in the film. He is a disturbed, isolated guy with some pretty dangerous ideas in his head but he knows right from wrong and his disgust with the world around him makes him want to protect whatever is left of this poor young girl's innocence.
It really pisses me off knowing that there are people like that in real life :(
Yes... adding sugar to jelly, there are strange persons in this world.
The film looks like it could have been made in the 90s. It looks pretty modern with the fashion and production, unlike most 70s films which haven't aged well.
Travis feels very reminiscent of the columbine shooters.

JAWS is a classic. Many 70s films are. This looks very 70s. So what?

Grape jelly and sugar sandwich...a little addicted to heroin there,Iris?
Whoa, never even considered that.
I’m 3 years years late but can you explain that to me I don’t get it, I always just thought it was symbolism for her sugar coating her life while Travis sees it for what it is
Diabeteeus
@@chriswalkey2050 It's common for heroin and meth addicts to load up on sugar in a constant struggle to get their dopamine and seratonin levels back to normal
Delta Homicide that’s interesting, could it pass as a double entendre?
Its Hard to believe she was 12
Great movie! I'm a fan of Jodie Foster and Robert De Niro! Jodie is beautiful !
Why is Travis on the AFI villain's list???? he doesn't seem like a bad guy
He's a hero, actually.
+GeneralArmstrong COC To give it a more proper term, he's an anti-hero. I agree with Roger Ebert that in Scorsese's film world, there are no heroes. Jake LaMotta, Rupert Pupkin, Sam Bowden, "Ace" Rothstein, Henry Hill. None of those guys are heroes.
+vegeta solo Anti hero.
+Vegeta solo He's deranged. He just happened to be in a situation where the violence was inflicted on the "bad guys".
He was not a "liberal"...
What makes you so high and mighty! They both gave great performances!
