It wasn't Ragnar that wanted to go back to Paris. Bjorn is the one that made that decision with the other leaders when Ragnar was badly injured at the end of season 3. And since they also decided to leave Rollo and others behind in a camp until next year it's not like Ragnar could then just change the plan. He had to go along with it even if he had no actual interest in going back there, which really shows in his lack of motivation.
Also Floki usefullness is very underrated. He is probably the most important of them all with the boats he builds, his siege weapons and all his other building constructions like the cranes to lift the boats over the mountains. Just being able create such devices on the fly is pretty insane. He is a real enginerical genius.

This show man. The equivalent would be a show taking place in the US, where Abraham Lincoln is travelling across the country with his contemporary companions: Bill Clinton and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Its not just bad history, its terrible history.

In a 1000 years or so there will probably be shows about those presidents having a stroll across america together. But as of right now that is still modern history which is why it seems ridiculous, just as 1000 years ago people would laugh at you for telling a story in which Ragnar and Rollo were brothers in.

Thats why it is called historical drama
"A historical drama (also period drama, period piece or just period) is a dramatic work set in a past time period, usually used in the context of film and television, which presents historical events and characters with varying degrees of FICTIONAL elements such as creative dialogue or FICTIONAL scenes which aim to compress separate events or illustrate a broader factual narrative"
Think your IQ has to be below 100 if you are looking for a history lesson in a drama show. Only historical lessons these can give you is to pique your interest in the subject which you then go study by yourself
