Technically though, how smart do we want the AI to be. Do we want them to have comms with the rest of the group and for half of them to set up a covered firebase while the rest use another exit to go around and come at your from behind in a pincer movement? Pretty sure that if the AI used seasoned combat tactics the majority of players would complain bitterly about the game being too hard.

Around 40:33 Vasco detects enemies and Gopher deals with them, declaring they are “dead enemies, “ex-enemies,” “enemies that have ceased to be.” I’m old enough that I have to wonder how many younger people today will get the Monty Python reference, but this is an example of why I enjoy Gopher’s sense of humor so much more than a dead parrot! Not that I enjoy ANY dead parrots other than Monty Python’s. :)

It's not "No Man's Sky," it's not "Elite: Dangerous," it's the original Mass Effect.
Loading screen to land on a planet with limited exploration area, slightly jank vehicle controls that some get used to and others don't, OK yet effective combat? Yep, Mass Effect all the way.

WAY back in MGS1, once you get discorved by the enemy and lose them, they still stay on high alert, speeding up their patrols and run when they hear sounds, they don't just have a sudden bout of amnesia and forget about you like they do even in "modern" Bethesda games.
I won't believe that it's impossible for the game engine to keep enemies in a 'caution' state for at least 1 in-game day.

I believe, the way that you use your scanner is you have to scan the same object but a different sample of the object in question. So if there are several samples of the same object that you're attempting to scan I believe that's how you raise your knowledge of said object...I. e. You'll have to scan multiple dust roots or rock samples. Or I also believe it might just be that you have to scan everything that is in the objective. 3/3 ore samples, 5/5 dust roots etc. whatever the objective is on your scanner. Also I think that the more you use your scanner or the more that you want to use your scanner when it's time to upgrade your skills you may want to invest some points in that ability. I believe it'll Grant you the ability to scan from a further distance and also scan more complex objects.

I've seen people describe the lockpicking minigame as "brain hurting" but I really don't understand that sentiment.
It's confusing as hell when you first do it, but as soon as you grasp the concept, it's really not that hard. Especially if you actually invest into the security skill. Then the game lights the rings up when a key fits in it. This mechanic is still used to mislead you, as higher difficulty locks give you more keys than you actually need to complete the puzzle. But it's easy enough to grasp and I rarely get caught up on it anymore.

Like with anything, you have to upgrade your scanner through skills. There are skills and ranks, that give you more abilities. For instance, "Surveying" gives you the zoom ability and increases the range to 20m. If you want more range and zoom, you have to work through the ranks.
The skill "Scanning" gives your scanner the ability to detect more stuff. There are 4 ranks as well.

A question for Gopher and/or anybody else who has progressed a decent amount in the game.... How is the writing? What are the quests and companions like? For context, I'm one of those people who won't play Skyrim without Inigo, various other companions, and tweaks that make the vanilla dialogue more diverse. Similarly, I wouldn't play Fallout 4 without Tales from the Commonwealth or Heather Casdin... You get the picture... Because here's the thing... I've always found that exploration in an open world setting is Bethesda's forte, nobody really does it quite like they do. However... when I want a strong story-driven experience I fire up games like Witcher 3, or, more recently, BG3. From what I've been given to understand, exploration in Starfield isn't at the same level as their previous titles...which I accept; the setting itself is bound to impose limitations. This does leave me wondering, though, what the more narrative elements of the game are like. Thanks for any input, btw.. It's just really difficult to find objective information on Starfield right now...

I’m a fair way into the game and I think that the writing is better than Skyrim on average, worse than the Witcher 3 on average and about the same as fallout 4.
As highs go, there is nothing that comes even close to the highs of W3, but I think there is nothing in Skyrim that competes with Starfield so far. And that’s where I would differentiate it from f4, things like sanguines quest are a highlight in Skyrim - now think of how rdr 2 handled a very similar quest, which I would put up there with W3. Starfield’s average quests are better than sanguine but not as good as rdr2’s handling of that same quest subject or the Witcher 3’s. Starfield highlights are as good as rdr’s and w3’s average quests.
I also think personally that the first quest - as seen in ep1 of this play through is by far the worst writing I have encountered in the game, from miner to constellation in my opinion is the worst and it only gets better from there.
Just my opinion of course, it’s very subjective! Hope that helps!!

@@PippetWhippet Thank you! This actually confirms my guesses, and I really appreciate the detailed reply. I've watched several initial Starfield LP episodes, and I came away thinking... "Oh gods, the writing seems so stilted, flat and boring." I mean, I felt FO4's writing was a huge step up from Skyrim, so I was hoping for further improvement. It sounds as though it does get better, at least..which is good to hear. Honestly, based on everything I've seen and read, I'll be waiting for at least six months before trying Starfield...by that time, there'll be numerous patches, some good mods, and, perhaps even some DLCs. In the meantime, I'll have BG3 to keep me occupied, and if I want sci-fi, *hopefully* Cyberpunk 2.0 will scratch the itch.

@@sonjaR2 you’re welcome :) I would add that a lot of starfields quests don’t finish when they seem to have finished, you can be asked by someone to fetch something, do it and walk away wondering who thought that was a good idea for a quest, only to have a pay-off later that brings a new context to things. It’s not every quest - though I may have missed stuff but it definitely seems to have been a deliberate direction!

Judging just from the bulpup design and the overhead magazine, the Grendel is trying very hard to take the P90, the most sci-fi of real guns, and make it look more sci-fi.
In that case it's somewhere between an assault rifle and a submachine gun, in that lovingly invented niche referred to as "personal defense weapons" simply because "bullet hose" sounds too unprofessional.
In other words, something that's capable of putting a sufficient amount of lead in the air that aiming becomes secondary, for use by people that can't be bothered to train with firearms since they are too busy learning other things the military needs them to know.

I did biological surveys in college and loved soil/geology field courses. The last thing I need is a game that tracks my "survey" of "flora", "fauna", and "resources" (probably minerals).

One more thing, the mining suit you get with early access is very useful so don't sell it right away. The terrirmorphs are fricking terrifying. Do not engage until you level up. 😮

It seems you have to hold the button for longer in this game to do it, than previous games.
