    Agree pretty much on every key point here regarding the tires: yes, the René Herse Bon Jon Pass Extralight ride very smooth (I ride them with inner tubes, though). I like them more than the Panaracer Gravelking Slick which is way less supple and also quite a bit bouncy. But indeed: I'd also wouldn't trust the Extralights for any prolonged bits on unsealed surface. And yes: any tire supplier should strive for a tan sidewall like René Herse. That brown of the Panaracers really doesn't cut it. Not by a long shot.

    Another fine entertaining video, Tobias. Just for the benefit of others reading the comments - these carbon rims from Xiamen, China are sold by dozens of companies, some with American brand decals on them. I've personally built up 8 wheels using rims with a similar spec to these. They were some of the best rims I've built among thousands of wheel builds. The finished wheels have very even tension, and are true and round. I've ridden a set similar to this on my Canyon for 3000 miles and they never needed truing. Too bad about the Rene Herse tires, they ride great but they always leak no matter what sealant Jan says to use this week...

    • @cliph6068
      @cliph6068 4 года назад

      Rene Herse EL only tend to leak at first. Once you have sealant in them and ride a bit they're fine. They seem to seal especially quick with Orange endurance.

I have some beefy Pirelli Centurato’s on 650b wheels for bike packing and rougher gravel. Think the new 700C set up will be really nice for the type of ride you are talking about. I had very hard to pop the Bon Jon tires on my Zipp303S too, even with easylube from schwable. Fortunaly I followed your trick with a tube to pop the tire first. My all black bike looks great with these tan wall tires. I put 100ml in each tires, the front one holds air pretty well, the rear one looses pressure after a few hours. I only rode 10km, the tires may need more km to seal properly.

    Thanks for bringing up these wheels from Farsports as I haven`t had them on my radar on my search for affordable carbon wheels. Since your video was released I bought my own pair at wheelsfar and they´re running flawless on my gravelbike. Seating the tires in the wheels was a pain in the..., as it was a very tight fit with between the No Hole Rim and the Wtb Resolute tires, but I knew what to expect after your video. Delivery was much longer as I had expected (approx. 1,5 months due to current situation) but it was okay form my point of view and the seller tried to keep up with information once i managed to get in contact with them. The weight was pretty accurate as they claimed the pair on 1300 g (+-15g) and I weigth them on 1311 g so within tolerance.
    Looking forward to see more stuff like that without digging holes in my pockets;)

    My Rene Herse Barlow Pass and Steilacoom’s I went with stan’s no tube regular version 3oz and 3 months in still no need for more sealant, no leaks, even with going through some single track on the Steilacoom’s (these are endurance version). I left each tire laying down for an hour on each side before using. Going with 3oz instead of 2oz definitely sealed the tires better. Definitely my favorite riding tires. And the endurance version for the extra 30g weight can go through some tough single track terrain without issue while still being very supple.

    Conti tubeless gp 5000 are air tight! They have a inner butyl layer and need the f...... g fluid only for puncture resistance. And they are a pleasure to install even on a non-taped-spokehole-free wheelset from Lightbicycle. That’s the definition of being really tubeless. I hate messing around with leaking tires and the fluid. 😎

    GKs FTW. This reminds me of the Pari Moto. I would not run these tubeless. The GKs are about the same weight and don’t leak except for the myriad of holes they eventually collect. ;-). Totally with you on this sort of "all-road" setup. I am running your other wheels (well my wheels, you know what I mean the XMC1200s) with 42mm GKs, as my everyday go anywhere wheels and I love this slick/slightly fat setup. Still noticeably slower than my ENVE 3.4s though.

  • @bengt_axle
    @bengt_axle 4 года назад

    I wonder why they don't make tubeless (e.g. Mavic UST) gravel tires, as opposed to "tubeless ready" (for sealant). If they made gravel tubeless tires with a butyl layer on the inside, it would remove the need for sealant (like a car tire). It is true that there would be no sealant to fix a puncture, but if you do, you could just plug it. With a butyl layer, there would be a weight saving from not having to put sealant in, in addition to simplifying installation. For rims like these, with no spoke holes, it would probably work fine. Personally, after seeing the weeping, I would just put in a latex tube and be done with it!

    What are your thoughts on Caden wheels? I'm a bit impressed by their tubular wheels, (just from reading the specs) less so with the clinchers and tubeless wheels. At 1020 grams for a set, they are about 40 grams heavier than the new Extralite tubulars, but they also cost half as much as the Extralites. And then I get to learn how tubs ride, and I can explore those fabled silk tubulars. :)
    BTW, a THM Tibia stem is on the way, step one in project "Keep the weight of the Strada decent". :)

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  4 года назад

      I've went down the tubular route before and it's simple way to drop some weight for sure... In the end I sold my set because I was not prepared to deal with carrying a spare tubular and the headache that it involves getting a puncture (In my opinion/experience is much more work than Tubeless)
      A climbing tubular set has to be below 1000g before I even think it worth thinking about :P
      The tubular tires usually end up a bit heavier though depending on size.... can you even get 30+mm tubs nowadays?
      Regarding, Caden, I can't say much... never tried or seen them in real life. In-house hubs never makes me very exited about brands like this. Not saying they are bad, just my own preference, I think the hubs are way more important than the rims now that I live in disc brake land, and today I would no personally would not get anything below a DT240 hub.

      @rasmuswi 4 года назад

      @@ridesofjapan it's actually that allegedly wonderfully supple ride of tubs, and particularly silk tubs, that intrigues me. And I'm old enough to remember when nobody had a saddle bag on their road bike, but everyone had a spare tub strapped to the saddle. Oh, and the Challenge Strada Bianca and the Challenge Gravel are available as 36 mm tubs, but unfortunately not with silk casing, the 30 mm Strada Bianca has that.
      Also, don't the Extralite wheels have in-house tubs? :)

    After buying a salsa warroad for the backroads here in rural WI, I’m happy to see how capable your bike is on 35c tires as that’s the limit on my bike for 700c and I’ve been having some FOMO seeing the clearance on more gravel specific frames. I’m currently running 34c byways but was curious why you choose slicks for an all road setup? Love your channel!

    First, I think your videos are amazing (very cinematic, great typography, soundtrack, AND informative), I became a subscriber.
    I was not a weight weenie but after binging on your vids, I've caught the bug and I want a Farsport 30 mm road only wheelset for my 2018 Trek Domane SL 5. I'm new to the game and can't decide between the rims w/ nipple holes or w/o holes. Also having a hard time deciding between DT Swiss 240 and Carbon Ti. I'm a feather wt. at 125 lbs (57.7 Kg) and like to go on longish hilly rides. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! 🙏

      P Kim cheer mate!
      it’s all down what your priorities are, if you want something light and that’s a priority, the carbon Ti is unbeatable.
      Holes or no holes there not really any benefit apart from not needing to use tape, on the other hand of you are prone to breaking spoked it will make it harder to repair.

    • @pkim8745
      @pkim8745 4 года назад +2

      @@ridesofjapan Thx for your input. Well then, I'm all in. Let's go w/ Carbon Ti as long as it's fairly low maintenance and sturdy. I'll go w/ no-hole rims, sounds simpler to set up (this will be my first tubeless!) And, luckly I've never broken a spoke in my life :-)

    Great videos, keep up the great work! I'm having a challenge deciding between the Farsports and Light Bicycle. I was wondering what was your deciding factor to go with Farspots? Also, any thoughts of using Tubulito tubes with Rene Herse tires? I've heard when you take sealant weight into account they can be pretty competitive on weight and that would remedy the leaking side wall issue.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  3 года назад

      At the time I was deciding, the farsports had the better weight combined with the exact rim dimensions I wanted and 180EXP hub. They both seem to change their lineup a lot, so the configurations might be different today.
      I don't use tubeless for weight reasons, it's only for the self-healing puncture abilities... tubolitos are in my spares kit.
      that being said, I would not get another pair of extralight Rene herse tires today if riding tubeless... too much hassle. (I retired the ones in the video, back to gravelkings)
      Cheers!

    Im also looking at the Feder 35 with carbon ti hub. Although cheap, need to look around the latest offering by others. Zipp brought their price down, 303s is cheaper but almost 300g heavier. 303 FC is about 100g heavier for not alot more, especially after farsports being taxed at import to many countries. 303 FC is abit deeper and wider, and come with lifetime warranty. Hmmm.... Decision decision.... May be i should fork out abit more and get the carbon-ti 338c.....
