STOP! Just stop building siiiick bikes. I can’t take it! I saw Colin Strickland’s Echo at Unbound Gravel this year and it’s been on my mind ever since. Gorgeous bike, sir!
You bastard 😉 I'm configuring a custom frame with external cable routing and you show this glorious example of internal routing. It looks insanely clean. Just wanted to let you know I now have a mixed love/hate relationship with this video.
Right off the bat, I love the trick with the plastic cover for the BB tool and cup to avoid marring the cup, seems almost impossible not too. I'll be using that trick from now on. Thanks for the share on that ;) .
Gorgeous build! And for those who don't work on their own bikes, please don't expect the mechanic not to curse you for them just a bit lol For the hose tool, you could get a nice clean perfectly flat cut. Place the uncut hose in the clamp first and then slide the cutter over top into the groove and then cut. Then you can insert the barb all without removing it from the clamp and you know it's perfectly perpendicular to the tool and the press surface of the barb "anvil"
My new road frame is due in soon, a Strael 3.0 in the Deep Grey colour, no weight weenies here :-) So I watched this beautiful video once again both for pleasure and to get ready for the build :-) Great video RoJ! Thank you for sharing all the build's 'lessons identified' and for your other top tips too. Peace
As always, an amazing video. I appreciate you going into the issues you had while building, whether major or minor, and even if it's something you just had a brain lapse on. I think I've forgotten something important on every little bit of work I do on my bikes so I really relate, and the attitude you bring to it is really inspiring. Bike looks gorgeous, happy riding!
Great video and useful tips, again. I work in the film industry on high-end software tools, have to say great editing all round. It’s so refreshing to see honest build videos, every other video I’ve looked at just has music playing over a perfect build, little or no grease, loads of spacers under the stem etc.
Outstanding videography and pace. The roads where you live are also stunning, making the assessments and commentary a visual treat. Thanks for such amazing content.
Good ‘real life‘ video. Lovely bike. Having to re hose the front brake and getting taken out on maiden trip very much true to life! Reckon you have a bike for both road and off road. Although as you said- would probably use the Road Bike for Road! Very much about searching for the ‘perfect ride’,which is in my opinion ongoing. Funnily enough my most excellent days spent on both MTB’s and Road Bikes was back many years when bike tech was very low tech compared to today’s Tech!! As once said by one of the best ever Grand Tour Riders.....It Ain’t About The Bike. However that shouldn’t stop us constantly searching for perfection.
Another 5* video as per usual. Keep it up! I have the ES600 pedals, they are designed for touring, ie they’re road pedals where you clip in once per 2-3 hours, and not for gravel. That said I like to ride in MTB shoes on the road over the winter and so they are perfect for that purpose.
Even though I don't own carbon frames because they are really expensive here at this end of the world, I love when you get a new one and put all your effort into making it a riding machine. The color and construction of that Allied is just amazing, but I absolutely love the emonda above all.
Love all the cock-up admissions…… can totally relate……. Excelllent build vid, nd thanks confirming that the flat tops of the enve bars annoyed you because I have the same concern.👍
Great video! Would love to see you compare it to the open up. I’m looking at both options and leaning toward the open due to price but would love to hear why you moved from the open to the echo and whether you would recommend the echo over the open?
Amazing video as usual! Nice ending: “until 9200, peace” 😂 Good luck sourcing it! Might be easier in Japan, but I bet it still won’t be easy. Everything Shimano is sold out in Canada. I can’t even get the finned resin pads for my bike 🥲
My rear Terra Speed was gone in about 800 km, I mean completely gone. And the carcass started failing as well, had dozens of micro punctures that did not seal.
You really know how to build premium (looking) bikes! As for the bare front derailleur space - you could have a custom cover 3D printed. (If you have a friend with a printer and CAD knowledge) ;--)
I didn't understand the handlebar choice until this video and how it meshes with the stem. An added bonus of those bars are the Enve clip-on aero bars for when you come out and do Unbound 2022.
Look mate, your bike is superb, looks perfect and it is,the whole setup seemed to be perfect, just need to find a no perfect point ,not a weakness but something is not to match perfect...to make it realistic perfect. Good rides 👌
Well done as always. I had an Allied Able but didn't care for the thick top tube by the seat tube...was a bit thick for my knees/legs. The Echo top tube looks like a similar shape. Nice build.
I'd pop a couple of washers behind the bolts on the Garmin mount. I had been using one of them but the mount snapped at the bottom due to vibrations. Garmin hit the deck and I almost came off because there was obviously not torque on the bars!
Yep, I've received a couple of warnings of that already, it's sketchy for sure, that's why I don't use the light/gopro mount that was included. Looking for a proper mount to replace it with asap! cheers!
Gr8 video. I like the fact that routing thru the head tube makes it clean and easy to mount bags, etc., on the bars, but, I am always worried that issues can occur with the brake hoses that you can't see until it maybe too late.
Great Video! Soo polished! Sundays with ROJ, my favorite. Being your own wrench is a growth experience. Learning to appreciate all the details is well worth the occasional mistake, IMO. I picked up those same pedals this year, eBay special, couldn’t resist. I have the same critique, but I found the small increase in platform size to be worth the trade off. I use them on my road bike, as I like to be able to walk in my cycling shoes. 😂 keep up the great content, be safe.Maybe add a deer whistle for the wildlife?
I use the ES600 pedals, but I only do road. I would not use them for gravel, commuting or any other kind of riding that may imply often uncliping. Still, when for whatever reason I have to unclip in a steep gradient, restarting is always... a experience.
My gravel bike uses the Wolftooth flip chip system & after a trying it in the various modes offer I found that I rather use long with the gravel & the road wheelset. I prefer the long, even on steep & bad roads.
Very nice build! As someone who enjoys building bikes, I always appreciate your attention to detail. Bummer about the animal running out in front of you! I would have been shattered over that 😩.
The mountain roads are unreal, but there is not much space in the valleys and when approaching cities it gets pretty crazy. Still, would rate it as bucket list worthy.
Love the look of the flat top stem. I think you can get a more round profile on the bars by adding strips of bar tape (or large tubing) longitudinally (left to right). Flared edges of the tape should help. Then cover the whole thing with cork bar tape. How well does the crank spin with the threaded BB?

At this point I don't even care about the bikes, I come for the cinematography masterclass.
The amount of work and craftsmanship put into these videos is simply astonishing! Kudos!
Couldn’t agree more, production quality is always phenomenal
I don't understand how you don't get free frames and gear considering the quality of your videos. Someone send this man more stuff !!
Getting free stuff sometimes imply in losing free of speech….!
What a Sunday: epic Fernwee this morning then an RoJ bike build this afternoon. Nice.
“until 9200, peace!” I hope the Claviculas stay on the bike. Great video, as always!
"That is not worth the 35grams" man you changed ! :')
Just you wait…. Just you wait ;)

That candy red against the tan walls is just excellent.
Best thing I've seen on TV in a long time

i like how he is neurotic. Makes me feeling zen.
These are by far the best cycling videos on youtube. The days you upload are the days with the best coffee breaks!
You are tooo real! Just what we need - reality for the daily people!
that tanuki slow boiling rant had me in tears 😂
Stem matches the hoods soo good, they look fast together🏎🏎

Please give us more vids, love your content Rides of Japan
You can significantly reduce the rotational friction on the es 600 pedals by adjusting the nuts on the spindle.
Bringing all the filming equipment to the top of 刈場坂峠...now that's some dedication, as none of the three approaches offers easy climbs!
On bike video kit had dropped weight significantly since the Emonda build ;)
@@ridesofjapan Can you make a video talking about ur video gear?
@@frankyfung6491 Don't really have time for that sorry, but for this video, indoor was shot on a Sony A7s3, the on-bike parts done with a DJI Pocket 2
The amount of breaking things was just a sign that you were excited to ride that bike!
Right off the bat, I love the trick with the plastic cover for the BB tool and cup to avoid marring the cup, seems almost impossible not too. I'll be using that trick from now on. Thanks for the share on that ;) .
This made my Sunday perfect😎 greetings from🇳🇴
The colour is brillant. Reminds me to a old German Car colour from OPEL - around 30 years ago ...

bike is beautiful but can't get over how amazing those roads are. so jealous.
Lovely stuff, man. Educational build, great camerawork, interesting commentary. I don't often thumbs up things, but you've definitely got my vote.
👍
Your asset to the cycling community.
Thx for the videos

Cheers mate! The mistakes are what makes us improve (hopefully 😅)
Det var de porrigaste introt jag varit med om i hela mitt liv!
I think the carbon tape on the front derailleur space looks really nice
Such a pretty bike, im green with envy 😁 lovely to watch
Rough start, but what a bike. Congrats!
really nice build, just a unique bike that looks fantastic. terra speeds with creamy sidewalls match the red really nicely!
Really first class video. I can binge watch.

Made my day with a new video. Thanks.
They couldn’t provide black screws for the stem top cap?? Those silver screws stand out so much on such a clean build.
Paint costs weight
Yeah...I would swap those out for black anodized titanium bolts!
Your videos are getting better and better, the intro shot is stunning ! 🧨
Outstanding videography and pace. The roads where you live are also stunning, making the assessments and commentary a visual treat. Thanks for such amazing content.
Love it.... Why wait until the end!! Always love the intros, then I was able to skip the build and experience the bike - fantastic 😎

Who could give a thumbs down... What a world.
Love the breathing you added over the first music track from the video :)
What a beautiful frame and build. Thanks for making this video
Nice job, as usual. Really love your filming and editing technique as well as your bike building skills.
Truly glorious attention to detail, so satisfying to watch these build videos of yours man!
Dream build… That’s my dream bike!!!
All the necessary information I have learned from this video is that integrated stems are a pain in the ass to work at!
What a gorgeous bike! And beautifully captured.
Another 5* video as per usual. Keep it up!

You can get a very nice cfr696 for 500$. I build one, maybe not the lightest, but rolls perfectly.
Holy panaracers that color is stunning!
Nice!! You are the master of intros!!

I have Es600 pedals and at first they didn't rotate freely, but after 200kms they started rotating freely and behaving as road pedals.
These have way more since they are used.

Great video as per usual. You may not need the road wheels and tyres with those Terra Speeds, super fast on gravel and road.
Awesome video (as usual)!
You just cannot imagine a better visual explanation why you should avoid internal routing by any means.
if you cut your forkshaft to short you can add 18mm with the velobike expander
I enjoy your videos so much, beautiful bike!

I think what this video highlights most of all is that if you want to ride without car drivers bothering you, then you need to move to Japan. Easy 😀
The mountain roads are unreal, but there is not much space in the valleys and when approaching cities it gets pretty crazy. Still, would rate it as bucket list worthy.
Very nice bike 👌👏🏻
Such a great video 👌
Nice build, I've had stem creaking issues with those gps mounts.
Now we’re talking! It’s a beauty. It’s the bike of choice for Colin Strickland. The tires look lovely. What brand please?
continental terra speed... as mentioned in the video ;-)
