    Came here from LinkedIn! Mark you're incredible. I've been so discouraged through this job application process, I've applied to like 50 jobs already and no reply and I'm about to grad from NYU with past experience at Amazon. It's rough out there but we all got this. And knowing that you went through 700 aps?? I have faith for all of us, we just have to keep applying and working on our skills!

    For a future video idea: Maybe something about what types of projects stand out to recruiters on a resume (obviously during the interview, being able to passionately talk about it is key but first you need to get past the resume screen!)

    Your videos have been super useful! Will companies know if you're sending out hundreds of applications, or do they just prefer if you put more effort into a select few? I'm trying to understand what strategy works best since the two halves of the video feel contradictory to me.

    • @markbenliyan
      @markbenliyan  8 месяцев назад +1

      This is a great question and I can totally see where some of that confusion is coming from. The advice for putting more effort into a select few actually becomes more relevant later on in your career / as we grow more senior. If you're a current student looking to land an internship or an entry-level job then I wouldn't worry about sending out hundreds of apps! That's what worked for me and a lot of other students I know.
      PS: companies won't know if you're sending out hundreds of apps. Particularly because for internships / new grad roles they usually all fall under one or two listings on the career site. This is no longer the case for mid / senior roles where there's sometimes hundreds of listings for a similar title at a given company

      Topic suggestion - what to answer in applications when cumpolsorily asked what our expected/desired salary is. Don't want to undersell myself but also don't want to seem like a candidate that's too expensive to hire.

    • @markbenliyan
      @markbenliyan  2 месяца назад

      Yes and no! My thinking on this just boils down to I believe we're all credible to speak on our own experiences .
      My goal on this channel is to help others by early-career folks getting into software engineering by sharing what's worked for me. I do this because it's what I wish I had when I was first starting out.
      On your point though, I say yes because if someone is trying to replicate my results (mostly CS students) then it'll hopefully be valuable to them.
      I also say no though, because I in no way think I'm qualified to give advice to every person out there. For example, if someone is trying to land their next senior or staff engineering gig, I don't have much to say to them since, like you mentioned, most of my experience has been internships while in school up until now.
      I think we can all only speak to our own experiences and what's worked for us. I also think this holds regardless of how successful one is :)
      Thanks for checking out the video regardless!
