I agree. Any time I watch black reactors react to this song I always cringe just a bit to wait and see what they say. Personally wether or not it’s with the hard “R” I wish that word would disappear out of the English language. Not really. By not saying the word you actually offer it more power, because it will become more shocking when someone says it because you don't hear it often. For example, in the Harry Potter franchise, voldermort's name is rarely said out loud so when its said it has more punch. Now that I think about it I don't know if that word now will ever lose its power regardless if we tried to stop using it or not. Possibly because the word has such a dark history we can never undo it. It's almost like trying to make a curse word a non curse word. I don't think it would be possible because of the history of the word. But we can only hope that one day people can stop using the word to put other people down.

It’s hard for a sinner to recognize sin in themselves but easy to recognize it in others… perhaps the clarity comes from talking to the mirror. Insight is the most powerful tool we have for inner peace.
The words may not carry the same weight but he lived the same reality as most disenfranchised black people in the slums. He’s pointing out in my opinion that white people in the same social situation suffers maybe as much, but he chose to point out the plight of the nuclear family struggling at the bottom of the social ladder against the racial stereotypes (black and white). I wouldn’t feel bad for not rocking with it but that just means it wasn’t meant to move you as much as the average person at the bottom who has hate in there heart who is suffering. Perspective is everything and no one wants to be at the bottom but I think it’s important (black and white) realize it’s the system.

Dude, as a white dude in Alabama, your thoughts were spot on. I'm about as politically incorrect as anyone, but I don't know why people want to take it that far. He could have made the same point without using that word. I like all types of music, but one thing country does better than other genres is to follow the less is more method. For example, Tyler Childers wrote a song called "Long Violent History" which encouraged white people to see shit from black people's perspective. He did it in a way that was non-preachy or offensive. Selective outrage. The new J Cole album uses the N word at least 130 times. It's all in the context of how it's used and by who it is used. White people usually use it as a weapon against black people but black people also use it as a weapon against everyone.
Imagine my shock when rap music started, and they used that word, I had been dealing with my racist grandfather and knowing what he said was wrong. It became common in rap music, now I find myself not wanting to hear it, even in rap. His video shows "Basis Stereotypes" followed by what the majority of people are like. It's rough, but i get it. I was a DJ on KDAY when Dr. Dre. was DJ'ing there. That is where I first started hearing that word, after only hearing my grandfather use that word. It seemed so odd, now people fling it around. Not sure why, to tell the truth. What is the point of using a word that is hated to call out someone, or to identify one's self? My______ I'm your _______, etc.? I had hoped we wouldn't still be dealing with this some 36 years later. I want a conversation about this.
This comment right here deserves to be pinned. I agree with every thing said here. I have always found it strange that we fight against racism but yet we still use the same word or a different connotation of the word to define "friends" or "homies"..or even as a greeting. I know of some reactors who want to stop saying the word in their reactions because they wanna inspire others to do the same. But when you have so many rappers today flinging the word around constantly it is hard to start a movement to remove the use of the word. I do not like word...period. Because if it is wrong for me to say it as a white guy..then it should not be used by anyone else because it only gives the word more power and carries on this ongoing battle of "should we use it vs should we not use it". The fact of the matter is, this word is frowned upon when the wrong race utters it..but it is open arm accepted when the right one uses it. Stevie, I get it. I was on a DART train coming home from jury duty, and an elderly black gentleman sat two rows ahead of me. A few stops after I got on, three black youths got on the train. They were jabbering away using the n-word constantly. I felt incredibly uncomfortable because I couldn't help thinking about how that elderly man (and his generation) had fought so hard to stop the use of the word. Yet here were these three young black men using it like an adjective for every noun they spoke. I almost said something to them but thought better of it. Thankfully, they got off a few stops later.
He was in jail for fighting a cop in a bar, he was cool with the black dudes in there and played football with them and shit like that. Dude puts more emphasis on action than words and he just a real dude who speaks his mind and I respect both you and him in that regard because too many today are too bitchmade to speak their mind. I agree. Any time I watch black reactors react to this song I always cringe just a bit to wait and see what they say. The n-word is also directly related to the history of racism in the united states where white people actually believed that the African race was inferior to the white-european race. Blacks where enslaved and oppressed for so many generations that it is universally recognized to have had long term ongoing detrimental effects to mental states/conditions of African Americans today. Not only this, but the centuries of oppression has established hard to eliminate residual infrastructural biases in laws, policies, institutions of government and education at all levels (federal, regional, local).
White racism, which DOES exists, is no where near as deep, as steeped in pain and suffering, and as long-standing as racism against blacks in America. The majority of power is still in the white mans hands (For example, 77% of congress is white while 59% of US population are white. It gets worse when you look at other institutions). So it makes sense that this other perspective that you mention isnt given the same recognition. It doesnt deserve to be, at least not now, when the issues blacks face are STILL greater!
Moreover, im a believer that more whites wholeheartedly joining in on the fight against racism against blacks in America and keeping that in focus until conditions are much better will reduce racism against whites. Also, are you KIDDING ME with the CONFEDERATE FLAG?!?!

I'm a white guy that grew up in a trailer park. However, my ancestors didn't grow up as slaves. My poverty is not the same as your poverty. Adam Calhoun is coming from a good place, but he could have handled it differently. Us white people have no idea what "that word" means and we've never had a word capable of cutting so deep.

Now that I think about it I don't know if that word now will ever lose its power regardless if we tried to stop using it or not. The words may not carry the same weight but he lived the same reality as most disenfranchised black people in the slums. He’s pointing out in my opinion that white people in the same social situation suffers maybe as much, but he chose to point out the plight of the nuclear family struggling at the bottom of the social ladder against the racial stereotypes (black and white). I wouldn’t feel bad for not rocking with it but that just means it wasn’t meant to move you as much as the average person at the bottom who has hate in there heart who is suffering. Perspective is everything and no one wants to be at the bottom but I think it’s important (black and white) realize it’s the system.

He could have made the same point without using that word. I like all types of music, but one thing country does better than other genres is to follow the less is more method. For example, Tyler Childers wrote a song called "Long Violent History" which encouraged white people to see shit from black people's perspective. He did it in a way that was non-preachy or offensive. He even put out an explanation called "A message from Tyler". Check it out on RUclips.

Selective outrage. The new J Cole album uses the N word at least 130 times. It's all in the context of how it's used and by who it is used. White people usually use it as a weapon against black people but black people also use it as a weapon against everyone.
Imagine my shock when rap music started, and they used that word, I had been dealing with my racist grandfather and knowing what he said was wrong. It became common in rap music, now I find myself not wanting to hear it, even in rap. His video shows "Basis Stereotypes" followed by what the majority of people are like. It's rough, but i get it. I was a DJ on KDAY when Dr. Dre. was DJ'ing there. That is where I first started hearing that word, after only hearing my grandfather use that word. It seemed so odd, now people fling it around. Not sure why, to tell the truth. What is the point of using a word that is hated to call out someone, or to identify one's self? My______ I'm your _______, etc.? I had hoped we wouldn't still be dealing with this some 36 years later. I want a conversation about this.

I have always found it strange that we fight against racism but yet we still use the same word or a different connotation of the word to define "friends" or "homies"..or even as a greeting. I know of some reactors who want to stop saying the word in their reactions because they wanna inspire others to do the same. But when you have so many rappers today flinging the word around constantly it is hard to start a movement to remove the use of the word. I do not like word...period. Because if it is wrong for me to say it as a white guy..then it should not be used by anyone else because it only gives the word more power and carries on this ongoing battle of "should we use it vs should we not use it". Stevie, I get it. I was on a DART train coming home from jury duty, and an elderly black gentleman sat two rows ahead of me. A few stops after I got on, three black youths got on the train. They were jabbering away using the n-word constantly. I felt incredibly uncomfortable because I couldn't help thinking about how that elderly man (and his generation) had fought so hard to stop the use of the word. Yet here were these three young black men using it like an adjective for every noun they spoke. I almost said something to them but thought better of it. Thankfully, they got off a few stops later.
