Yesterday I ported my dad's landline from his cable company to Tello overnight, and today I set up the porting to Google voice. Hopefully that'll take only 24 hours as well, then his old friends calling his landline will connect with him on his cellphone through Google Voice. Tony, your instructions were great!
John, Did it work? I’m looking to do the same thing for my parents.
@@wepps8591 Indeed it did work, almost exactly 24 hours after Google acknowledged the pending port of my dad's number. Google even provides a countdown clock estimating when it would be completed, and within a few minutes of the end of the countdown I tested a call, and my dad's old home phone number rang on his cell phone as his new Google voice number. I think I had to restart his phone but that was all, it really worked amazingly well! He still gets calls on that number from old friends and is grateful it worked since he's had that number for almost 57 years!
wow thats fast. one day to port landline to Tello huh?
@@-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-... Yes, the speed of the porting was really surprising. I'd definitely consider Tello mobile for future service, especially if I didn't need much data .

Thank-You! This is a most helpful guide and goes so step-by-step in detail that I could follow it for porting my home landline and my 90 year old mother's landline to Obi phones. This was a blessing of a guide for those of use who are not comfortable with all these changes.
Finally an organized step-by-step video teaching how to port a landline number to Google Voice. I really appreciate your help. I searched everywhere online to find this information. You are the most comprehensive,
Thanks for this it was extremely helpful. I was able to help my parents finally cut the cord and save their almost 40 year old number. I wanted to let you know that the google voice porting is slightly different now than when you made this. It is all now under the new interface and not the legacy, but most importantly it appears that using Zeros for the porting pin does not work and you have to use your Tello security pin. Tellos website still suggests you use zeros which will cause confusion to many. Google Voice was telling me my account information was incorrect and after some searching, I found a reddit thread discussing it from around 20 days ago
Thanks! I was just in the process of helping my parents cancel their Spectrum phone service and was going to try porting to a Tello SIM before porting to Google Voice. This completely validates my approach!
Great to hear. Good luck Jason
VERY good, no nonsense, clear, concise directions, I wish others were as good as you for sharing information on "How To's"
Amazing. I have tried using videos in the past and end up completely frustrated. Did I mention this one was AMAZING? Seriously -- thank you so much!
good update for 2023 almost went with Mint but this is better
Thank you! Your directions worked perfectly!
You're welcome!
Do you have to cancel the landline service? I out in my land line and it says tello cannot port that number. My land line is still active
No never cancel it or you run the risk of the number going into pool. The provider you are switching to does that. You can always call you previous provider but I would do it after the number is working where you need it to to make sure it's safe
Excellent!! Thank you so much for the video.
@tonyteaches - tello has esim option, can I use that instead? Phone is compatible per the check option
Thank you! Tello did what Cricket couldn't do.
You're welcome Aaron
I want to port my mobile number to Google Voice however I am afraid that once my mobile service plan is terminated (I use FreedomPop) my number will e considered a VoIP number.
It happens that Paypal and other services won`t accept VoIP numbers to do account verification.
What if I need to open new accounts and the only phone number I have is a VoIP?
Would you now whether you can or cannot verify new accounts with a Google Voice phone number?
Hey i tried using this method to switch over my company land line to google voice and google voice says they cant switch from tello. and i know its not my area code as i can switch my cell over and they are in the same area code
You can no longer find change option -- Help us
I have done everything correctly but Tello is needing a porting PIN number on my landline to finish the porting process. I have an ATT landline/VOIP. How do you obtain this pin number on a landline?
please help i look like i just broke the work phone as tello doesnt get signal here
Do you have any suggestions if the Change button no longer exists?
My Obi 200 might be toast and they don't even make them anymore. What do you recommend for a phone?
Success (I think)! Tellos says my port in was successful, but my old line still works. Strange.
When i travel what if no wifi can i used the data that is already bought from the country i m in?
After the number is ported, you just cancel Tello, correct?
I tried several zip codes (starting with my own) on Tello when completing the order for the plan and sim card and getting: "an error has occurred" and not able to complete the order. Have they run out of phone numbers? Thoughts?
Thank you. I have obtained a google voice number using my landline number as verifying phone. Now, that I want to port this landline number to this new google voice. Can I just port my landline to pay as you go cell number? And then port this same number to this google voice? Will it said that “this number can’t be used for verification” during porting because it already been used??

Didn't know what a port PIN was. Hopefully I got it right. My Comcast account shows a Voice Security PIN.
Did this work for you? I'm in your boat and have been pulling my hair out for the past couple of days. When you put in an account number, did you use the account number or landline number?
@@johnbaker95899 I looked up my account number. I initiated it yesterday so I don't know if it has worked yet.
If you don't currently have a provider for your old landline number, the last time you used that number was with magic jack and are no longer using them, can you still transfer that number?
I think the number needs to be on an active account before it can be ported. If the number has not been reused, you can reactivate it with magic jack and then try. Note that some numbers can not be ported to Google Voice at all.
What if I just forward all my calls and SMS to my Google Voice number instead of porting my number to Google Voice? Is it possible?
I have a FreedomPop mobile account (no monthly fees) thus I don`t mind keeping my mobile service plan active. I just want to be able to receive calls and SMS while I am outside the USA (FreedomPop has no international roaming service).
Sorry, but just to make sure i do this correctly. My cell phone is unlock and used with a sim on Tmobile. So I would use my IMEI number off my phone and get the sim from Tello. Take out my Tmobile sim. Put in the Tello sim. Get my number ported into google. Then put my old sim back in my phone and resume using Tmobile on my cell and have my house phone under Google Voice.
I'm trying to move my home phone (currently VOIP via provider) to Google Voice. I don't want to mess up my current cell number buy giving my current cell IMEI to Tello. What would this do to my current cell phone number? Do I need to buy a burner phone to do this?
Yes you can use a cell phone you have a number you don't want moved
when I try to get to this screen, I don't have these options
to change/port
please help
do I actually have to put sim card in my phone?
I appreciate your video but I’m still confused as to how I could still use my landline with the Google voice on a regular phone versus on a computer
If you have the Google Voice App on your phone it should be as simple as logging into the google account you used to port your landline. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
Is the Obi200 still available for purchase? Is there an alternative / updated model?
I believe it is, but they will no longer be supported in the coming year. So I do not know if it will still work.
No longer made, nothing on the market to replace it. If you have one already set up, it should work until the hardware fails.
I ported my ATT Landline phone number to Tello 16 days ago but google still says it isn't supported. Any ideas?
Same ... sorry can't help but having the same issue

I'm getting ready to drop my landline and want to do this to preserve my number. Can I get a new GV phone number if I already have one that I want to keep separate?
And I assume I am able to install the Tello SIM card into my T-Mobile phone to access Tello?

Some area codes and numbers can not be ported to Google Voice no matter where they come from. Is there any way to check with Google Voice before starting the process?
Try this voice.google.com/u/0/porting/

Did not work for me. Google Voice says my number can't be ported.
Tello requires that a returned phone, for refund, must first be unlocked and factory reset by the purchaser, but does not provide instruction on how this is done.
Just to be clear, the Tello sim card must be installed in an unlocked phone - correct?
Yes
I guess Tello provides a new phone # when they send you the SIM card so that the phone works? & then I keep in the Tello SIM card until the number is ported and then I can cancel with Tello and put in the original SIM card back into the mobile phone? In the interim with the Tello SIM card, where do phone calls and texts go when sent to the original phone number?@@TonyTeachesTech
Available Google voice
I just want a 2nd number so that i can port that number to Google Voice. I'll just buy a phone on their site that's elgible, get the 5 dollar service and 2 dollar sim fee. Port the number. Verify it's google voice, and then i can just return the phone to Tello for refund of phone? I'll probably also call forward from this new number to my main cell phone. I really just want to use my main cell for everything, but not lose the service by porting my main number.
Can I do this and keep my landline phone over a smart phone? If so how?
buy a google voice box plug your landline cable to that.

I ported my Verizon landline into Tello, Tello said it was ported, but google voice still says it's not supported. Any ideas? Just give it more time?
Hmm I haven't seen that before. Did more time do the trick?
@@TonyTeachesTech It hadn't and I needed to get my work line back online, so I moved it to Line2, which did port successfully. I will see if in time, I can transition it over to google voice to avoid having to pay costs.

Too bad the awesome OBi units will no longer have service at the end of 2023 and there is no replacement.
There is no change button.
Try from the classic interface of GV www.google.com/voice/b/0/redirection/voice
Works with Ooma?
Ooma is a completely different service. 2nd least expensive option available. MJ is least expensive.
