Man I wished I seen this before I left Canada. Even if you think you are all set because you called your credit card company and told the about your travel plans, if you need to purchase anything online that requires you to enter the code they would normally send you, Not happening unless you planned ahead. I was lucky because not only does my Credit card have 2 option to receive the code and one that worked was my email, so there's that. But my other credit card didn't have that option. I'm 61 and still learning. Travel Safe everyone.
I am Canadian, with Rogers. I went to wifi setting and read that if you turn on wifi calling, you invoke their daily international charge (roam like home). This is $15 per day.
J@barbhiggins .Wow. I'm with fido that is associated with Rodgers in Canada. Would like to be able to get text in the Philippines from my banks in case it's needed. Don't know what to do.
Yeh we're Canadians having extended stay in Turkey and it has been a total nightmare, and yep we can't order anything online. The systems just reject us and our cards.
Awesome - this video just saved my butt - and after half a day of sweating it after short codes suddenly stopped working here after 5 years. Thank you!
Thank you for your time and posting. Everything is confusing until you get used to it. :) I'll rewatch this video and write down the facts. After reading several comments, it is interesting that YOU are now an IT expert because you offered a solution to an issue, and it is all complimentary. Thank you again.
Hahaha yeah I didn't know what I was getting myself into! 😂 This worked for me, but if you wanna be extra sure, you can reach out to your provider and ask if it will work with their service. You can also run a test - just turn on wifi calling, then disactivate your cell service, then see if you can send and receive calls and texts still. If you can, then it should work (I think)!
Well I think it works. I live in US, have US phone number (AT&T) and bike tour outside the US every year for 4 mo. As I'm preparing to do another bike tour through US winter and need security code verification from many sites like Amazon, financial, etc, I did not want to sign up for AT&T's internation plan which would cost me $10 extra each day added to my regular acct billing. So I followed your video, and here at home, I turned on WiFi calling on my phone turned on Airplane Mode, enabled WiFi on the phone, and tried logging into Amazon (I'd cleared all passwords in cache) which wanted to send me an OTP code. Clicked to send, and voila, it showed up in my messages (iPhone) and I was able to log into Amazon. So just hoping this will also work outside US when I am in Asia.
But whatever you do, don’t deactivate that line or toggle off WiFi calling while you’re outside the U.S., because it might not let you turn it back on from abroad
@@hchicletsall you have to do is turn off your cellphone signal so you can test while still in the US. In theory if you still get the texts while only connected to WiFi (that is what they did with airplane mode, but you also have to turn WiFi on in airplane mode for it to work) then you should get your texts when overseas and only connected to the internet, not connected to your US cellphone companies celular signal.
You’re very welcome, it’s a pesky problem and I’m happy I finally found a solution! The only annoying thing with this strategy is you gotta be really careful not to accidentally turn off the wifi calling while abroad (our reset your settings). Because when I’ve done that in the past, I couldn’t turn it back on without making a trip home.
@@swathantrakumar9999if you have a active plan no. I had to update my E911 address but lately Witi calling doesn’t work for me. Is that because of the iPhone update or E911 malfunction? Not sure. It just says “order confirmation” after I put in the e911 address but doesn’t activate the WiFi calling
I don’t have that wifi calling option on my iPhone. What’s the next solution if this isn’t available? Btw, my phone provider is from Canada bc I live in Canada
Another option is to find a provider that includes roaming but isn't too expensive. For example, US mobile came out with the Unlimited Starter plan that includes international data and you can receive the codes through roaming instead of wifi calling (although it's a little more expensive than the option I described in this video). Maybe there is something like that in Canada!
Hello @bengunn4373! I am planning to retire in Thailand as well, starting next February. I have gone crazy trying to find a solution to double verification while in Thailand. Are you in Thailand now? Have you been able to double verify using WiFi calling? What US cell phone carrier do you use? Thank you for letting me know!
We’re trying to figure out what company offers that $5 texting plan you’re referring to. The link in your description doesn’t give the option ‘Customer Plans’ or anything about Not Data Hungry. Do you have a different link we can try? Thanks
It looks like they have slightly changed their options since I recorded this video. But when I scroll down on that page now, I see the light plan for $6
PU - just wanted to say thanks bro Ive ben combing your channel for a while now; learned a ton about traveling internationally thanks for your advice (downloading esim app now)
i need a usa esim number that can be activated overseas to receive txt msgs and isn't expensive, up to maybe $8 / month to keep the number and not lose it, any recomendations ?
Yup Wifi calling is a setting you turn on for your home SIM. When you get to Malaysia, you'll have both your home line and your travel eSIM line turned on, and your data plan will be set to your travel eSIM.
Man this saved me. I had to pay bill and needed to xfer funds. My carrier couldn't tell me why today I couldnt receive text. I do have wifi at the moment so this fixed my problem. Thanks so much
You can just turn the wifi calling setting on before you leave home, and turn roaming off. That why it will use wifi (or a data signal from a local sim if you get one) instead of roaming.
It's US Mobile but not obvious on their web page. You have to go to the dashboard, select the Low-data plan, switch from annual to monthly to select the Custom option and then you can request 50 texts/month, which comes out to a little less than $5.
@ProjectUntethered Will this DEFINITELY NOT WORK unless you change the settings in your phone before leaving the US? I more or less moved back to Sweden and bought a new iphone here with a Swedish SIM, but still pay the lowest possible pre-paid $3/month with T-mobile just to make sure I dont loose my US Phone number. Any suggestions how I can make this work?
You can always give it a try to see if it works! It seems to depend on your home carrier. Because my wife turned it on while abroad (her home carrier is from colombia) and it worked. Good luck!

Been havign serious problems with banks etc ovet the years and The other day I wanted to give the eSIM thing a try so chatted with T Mobile support and told them I wanted to get an eSIM.. the guy was totally trying to sell me a $90/month plan as my best option, then went down to 60/month. I told him its not worth that kind of money to recieve 2-3 verifications texts per month. Looked for other options all day then decided to call t mobile support, and they just set it up with my current prepaid plan with NO PROBLEM. I have an unlocked iphone 13 that I bought in Sweden so maybe thats why it worked to set this up while already abroad. it was all fixed in 10 minutes, and Ive already been able to take care of several bank errands etc instead of arguing with them for hours on the phone every time I need to do something as simple as sending a Zelle transfer etc. Feel free to ask questions if I mssed any details, I know how stressful this can be.
Basically, I need an eSim with a US number to receive verification codes from my US bank while I am in Europe. How is US Mobile's coverage in Europe? And will it receive verification codes while I'm also using my regular European physical sim and local phone subscription in the same phone?
It should work if you have both lines active and set things up correctly - but you can also reach out to their customer support if you have any doubts. They are pretty helpful!
Just had a chat with USmobile on the link you provided, but the rep said the text-only plan has been discontinued. Please update with the plan you use now for bank verification codes.
You mentioned "on an iphone" - does this work on android? I've always had this turned on (or at least the android version - its called 'Wi-fi calling') but it doesn't help me receive message while overseas (i have a dual google phone with local esim) my home plan is active.
I wish you explained this more clearly. I still can't receive my OTPs and I have international roaming. I therefore need to turn airplane mode off to receive them which costs loads.
Oh yeah one MORE thing I found out, ...there is NO WAY to Specifically Select "Light Speed" when you sign up, they just lead you through the Payment Process and send you a "Starter Kit" which includes TWO SIM Cards, and Both will not Work.
Hi! What is the difference if iI turn my primary home line off vs keeping it on and turning off the data roaming while my esim is still on in both situations? I thought it was good to turn off the main line to not incur those international fees?
If you turn your primary line completely off, then you won't be able to receive the texts/calls. But if you just turn data roaming off, then you should be able to receive them via an internet connection without incurring roaming charges. But to be extra safe, you could give your carrier a quick call to ask!
Thanks. However I forgot to turn wifi calling on when i left US. Had to call Verizon on a calling card and the rep was able to turn wifi calling on remotely- now it looks like its working
Mate, thanks, but I need to receive the Philippine bank code and I am currently in Australia. I no longer have a Philippine phone number, and the bank told me to call back to add a new mobile number. What do you recommend?
I only traveled to Europe one other time and used a physical sim that also had a phone number. With a data only eSIM, it is not clear what to do for apps that require a phone number, like FreeNow. Will turning on the WiFi calling take care of this type of situation?
So I was just In Thailand for couple of months. I got a local Esim and it worked great but I did not get verification codes because the default sim was the esim. So if I want to receive sms codes, I would have to put the default sim setting back on my US sim card, put airplane mode on and log onto hotel wifi ? then once I'm done just switch back to the Thailand Esim as the default sim and take off airplane mode ? Do I have this right ?
What if you have a canadian cellular company and that bank SMS goes to that phone number asssociated with that but you then go abroad to say UK and get a SIM card for a different carrier ( different number) will i still get SMS from my bank to my iphone or does this only work using the SAME carrier with same number that your bank has?
Maybe I am missing something here, or can't see whats right in front of me. I live outside the US 9-10 months a year, and very much need the SMS verification function you talked about (but didn't name). You said you'd add the link down below, but I see no link. What am I missing?
i got a mObal japanese sim, whilst staying in UK. it came with a Japanese telephone number. sim got verified, sim is active but i cant receive a verification number whilst in the UK, to transfer my line account
Would just turning on home sim and data roaming work, obviously roaming fees, but I could be worth just for a few minutes to do all the verifications you need right. Am I missing something?
Hmm that’s a really good question! I’m gonna reach out to my provider and ask if that would work and if so, how much it would cost (I’m scared to turn off wifi calling without being 1000% sure!)
Is the plan as of July 2024 the Digital Minimalist plan? If so, it would appear the monthly cost is now $10. Update: You have to log in, click on Add a Line, select the monthly plan, and then it gives you an option of customizing a plan with only 50 texts.
I was struggling with this for a couole of days because i was recieving sms verification codes and then all of a sudden it stopped. After switching on the wifi calling, they all came through. So i am assuming it had to do with my data plan running out. So thank you so much for this.

My husband and I live in Brazil since 2021 and we have so many problems with this codes. We are going to the US now for one week to purchase a US phone line and try this method. Do you know if you need to stay a long time with that line working in the US for it to work when you are abroad? And if you use a duo sim phone does it still work?
that's an expensive trip just to get a US line. why don't you have your relative or friends buy one on your name, activate it and send the phone to you?
You should be able to set it up and leave the same day. That said one big issue with this strategy that I just discovered is that if you do a software update on your phone while abroad, it might automatically deactivate the wifi calling and essentially “break” the strategy. This happened to me recently, and the easiest solution I found was to switch my plan to their unlimited plan that includes international data. I was able to do this without having to go back to the US (although only messages work, I think you’d need to go back to US to get calls to work). You could ask their customer service chat if this is a possible solution to set up if you don’t yet have an eSIM with them (I already had one but not sure if that makes a difference). It’s not as cheap as the $6/month method I mentioned in the video, but it might be better than flying all the way back to the U.S. switching plans also solved a problem I had on my iPhone of the battery draining too fast. Hope this helps!
@@aviverma5531we had to go to the US for other reasons too, but yes it is a very expensive trip. The thing is that when someone send a phone from the US to Brazil it gets tax arriving here like 100% of its value, it’s insane. It is not worth it.
What phone line in the US was difficult for you to turn off and on wifi calling --- so I can avoid that one? I'm trying to figure out cheapest phone carrier from the US, just so that I can continue getting texts and pass 2 factor identification. I have cricket now but their lowest plan is $35, I want something cheaper because I don't otherwise use it.
I would ask their customer service chat, because I know they’ve changed the plans/tech since I made this video. There are certain plans that can be activated abroad and the texting will work, and other where you need to be in the U.S. to turn on wifi calling. So I’d just double check with them!

Started to send me a code for paying bills .it would not come through .i had 2 call the bank 2 get them 2 send code .undelive this has just happened. Can you put me in the right direction please how 2 do 4 me regards Julie donnelly
May I ask what provider your wife has in Colombia? I am from Colombia living abroad and would like to have that option of having a Colombian number and being able to use it abroad without having to have an active plan all the time. thanks
The only consistent way I’ve found is to use a normal US carrier (can be a physical sim as well) with wifi calling turned on. You don’t necessarily need an eSIM for it to work. The codes should come through if you’re using wifi as well. If you don’t have a dual SIM phone, that would mean you wouldn’t be able to get a data plan in the country you’re living in. In that case, you could also just buy a cheap flip phone and use it solely to receive your codes. I usually do this as a backup Plan C 🤓
@purewater77887 I can’t remember the name off hand, but it was one I ordered from the U.S. Mobile site, I think I just chose the cheapest one that has the option for WiFi calling
Thanks, but your solutions don't seem to work so far as I can tell. Does one have to keep the original phone plan from your home country and somehow get the esim software to redirect the calls & messages (in which case it's double the price)? The data plans seem quite expensive and few seem to last for more than a month at a time cf. a local phone plan. Maybe these solutions work for travel of maybe a month or two, while keeping your same number from home (and then it would be cheaper than roaming plans from your local provider). But they're no good for a permanent virtual (mobile) number solution.
Yes the original home plan for me costs $5 per month. And the local data plan (or travel eSIM) depends on where the country is you're traveling and the plan you choose - but this is an expensive that most travelers pay for anyway. So the only difference really is the $5/month plan you have running in the background from home. The calls and messages come through when you have wifi calling turned on your home line. I've been using this solution for years, and have not found a cheaper way to receive the bank codes consistently.

@@ProjectUntetheredI’m leaving Cricket for US Mobile, does it matter if I change carrier while abroad, for Wi-Fi calling to continue working?
It doesn't work for me for some reason.. I always have Wifi Calling on, but - when I'm abroad I never get SMSs...
Oh yeah one MORE thing I found out, ...there is NO WAY to Specifically Select "Light Speed" when you sign up, they just lead you through the Payment Process and send you a "Starter Kit" which includes TWO SIM Cards, and Both will not Work.
Saved my trip, thanks!
@@ProjectUntethered Will def take your advice but thank you for your input this helps my confusion quite a bit haha Thanks!!
this worked! thank you!
Hi, will WiFi calling work with an AT&T prepaid plan? Please let me know. Thank you very much!
Thank you sm, very effective!😊
Thanks for this, my sis is off to Bali and was worried about her bank texts coming through.
I have an orange sim in morocvo snd can't get texts to sort out revoulex
Thanks. However I forgot to turn wifi calling on when i left US. Had to call Verizon on a calling card and the rep was able to turn wifi calling on remotely- now it looks like its working
Thank you SO MUCH. I am still trying (and confused). I have US carrier and I'm living in Panama. Must I have a local SIM card?
Thank you! Helped us get gmail confirmation codes
Thank you solved my problem, lifesaver
Maybe I am missing something here, or can't see whats right in front of me. I live outside the US 9-10 months a year, and very much need the SMS verification function you talked about (but didn't name). You said you'd add the link down below, but I see no link. What am I missing?
It should be in the video description, you may need to click "See More" :)
Can't you just change your VPN to the US?
Zero option to turn on WiFi calling on my home line (I’m already abroad). Guess I needed to do it while still in the US. Any other options?
May I ask what company your using that charges $5 for 40 incoming texts?
If you call using WiFi calling on att they will still charge you. Not sure about receiving messages.
i got a mObal japanese sim, whilst staying in UK. it came with a Japanese telephone number. sim got verified, sim is active but i cant receive a verification number whilst in the UK, to transfer my line account
Please help, how do you turn on roaming when you're already abroad
Good options yet if you turn your airplane mode and are under WiFi you are getting texts from the US; please confirm if you have tried.
You’re very welcome!!
Which provider?
Goat 🐐 Thank you so much
great video, but what is the company you choose for the $5? (monthly fee?)
I agree, I can't figure that out.
bit.ly/3PKRANl you have to scroll down a bit - looks like they raised the price to $6

@@ProjectUntethered Thank you.
It's US Mobile but not obvious on the web page. You have to go to the dashboard, select the Low-data plan, switch from annual to monthly to select the Custom option and then you can request 50 texts/month, which comes out to a little less than $5.
The last one that is $4.48 a month, which link is that? You didn't mention who the provider was in the video (or I missed it)
Should be the first link in the description! I believe it's $6 now though.
Thank you very much It really works for me appreciate it
What phone line in the US was difficult for you to turn off and on wifi calling --- so I can avoid that one? I'm trying to figure out cheapest phone carrier from the US, just so that I can continue getting texts and pass 2 factor identification. I have cricket now but their lowest plan is $35, I want something cheaper because I don't otherwise use it.
And I can't port my number to Google Voice because I've already left the states
Thank you so much I am so happy. Really appreciate you making this video.
Thanks for the video. This didn't work for me in Thailand.
Has anyone found a cheap carrier option for sms from Canada ?
Would also like to know that.
"Cheap US plan to receive SMS codes abroad" Can the minimalist plan for 8USD/month be activated when being abroad / outside the US?
I would ask their customer service chat, because I know they’ve changed the plans/tech since I made this video. There are certain plans that can be activated abroad and the texting will work, and other where you need to be in the U.S. to turn on wifi calling. So I’d just double check with them!
@@ProjectUntethered Thanks, will do so.
I think iwe need to have our main line activated ? and actually most oprators do not charge for incoming text msgs while roaming
How about GigSky directing SMS to What'sApp?
Bless you soul, this video is life saving
hi i have a Colombian sim card but i live in Chile.. Which Colombian company sim card does your wife use . Is it pre-paid or postpaid. Can you recommend a cheap Colombian sim card that i can use in foriegn countries --i dont need data, i only want to use the bank OTP and receive calls.
Hello! Dayan says she has a pre-paid plan with Claro and pays like $1 to recharge it every two months or so to keep the line active. So far it’s been working for her. I hope this helps!
I just saw your video .as i live in uk .my navy federal credit union. Started to send me a code for paying bills .it would not come through .i had 2 call the bank 2 get them 2 send code .undelive this has just happened. Can you put me in the right direction please how 2 do 4 me regards Julie donnelly
thanks for the info, but i'm sick of hearing about eSims because my phone won't take an eSim
May I ask what provider your wife has in Colombia? I am from Colombia living abroad and would like to have that option of having a Colombian number and being able to use it abroad without having to have an active plan all the time. thanks
for expats, what would be the best way to get OTP from my banks? Do you have any opinion on Tello? My phone is old and not compatible with eSim
Can you tell me which flip phone you have? I le the Idea of having a backup plan. Thank you!
@purewater77887 I can’t remember the name off hand, but it was one I ordered from the U.S. Mobile site, I think I just chose the cheapest one that has the option for WiFi calling
So this is only for iPhone?
Do you know if there’s anyway to receive OTP from the Philippines in US?
Great video! If you turn on wifi calling from your home country and then you have to put the phone in airplane made will that turn it off?
