Brilliant video! I'm looking to buy a Microphone for a friend as a gift because over lockdown we've started playing more and more games with others and his microphone, a cheap... thing... that plugs into the 3.5mm port is dying and he's too stingy to buy another. I personally have the NW700 *V2* (the V2 sounding way better than the muffled V1 you seem to have) but he's not going to buy an interface for it so I started looking at the USB200. Thanks to your video I know that it is probably one to *avoid* because it's just a bit too noisy and the highs will give everyone ear fatigue.

I'm honestly not sure which version of the NW700 I have, but they're only a little over a year old. It pains me to say it, but I would exchange them if I could. However, they came as part of a package deal with the boom arms and shock mounts, and for the price I paid, the mics were basically free when all was said and done, so I can't complain too much, since I'll still use the other items after I replace the mics.
I'm glad the video as able to help you out! You might consider looking into the NW-7000. I don't have any personal experience with it, so I can't honestly vouch for it, but my understanding is that it's essentially the USB version of the NW700. If they've improved the NW700 as you said, then the NW7000 might be the way to go :)

@@imJMB There's loads of excess stock of Neewer mics around, so even at a year old I wouldn't be surprised if you got a V1. You can tell if it's a V2 by looking at the PCB inside; V2 will be silk screened on.
I actually ended up buying him a FiFine K670 - others demos painted that as a very good budget mic, and it doesn't have a boom arm (he has very little space for one). He should be getting it tomorrow!
It's a shame I can't find an NW3U! I was shocked at how good it sounded here! That's phenomenal audio quality for under £200, let alone under £100!

This is funny to me in a way, because many of the earliest reviews of the NW-700 sounded pretty damn good to my ears, and I was really disappointed when I got mine. This leads me to believe it's not so much a matter of V1 or V2, but just kind of a gamble in general. Either way, both of mine sound basically the same, and in this case, that's not a good thing. Once I start up my podcast again, I intend on replacing these mics with something else. I keep wishing on falling stars for a RODE Sponsorship...haha
I just checked out the FiFine, and for the price, not bad! I think it lacks in body a little as well, but the lack of background hiss makes it passable in my opinion. I actually heard from Neewer last week, and they said they were working to sort out some of the complaints I had with the USB200. Maybe they'll have a V2 at some point as well. Fingers crossed.
Yes! The NW-3U still blows my mind. Even at £20.92 / $26.99 prior to it being discontinued, it's worth every penny. I some times wish I had bought 2 while they were still around an still £13.17 / $16.99. Live and learn, haha.
@@imJMB Huh! Colour me surprised then. I've got a demo of an NW700 on my channel and it's not muffled or flat like yours at all. That's so weird. Guess it must just be a gamble.
Yeah the FiFine is still a little flat, but for gaming and discord? It'll totally do for him. At £40 I'm not going to complain.
I recommend the NW-800 usb mic. Iv used it for 2years and now iv decided to upgrade. I was looking at this mic cuz I considered getting this for a few friends but I think I should just stick to the 800 usb.
Unfortunately, I have no experience with the NW-800 microphones. What I will say though, is that there seems to be a weird inconsistency with some Neewer Microphones. For example, the NW700 that I have sounds awful (as you heard in the video), but there are other people who have NW700 microphones that sound great!
I'm not sure if this is a processing issue, or if they've changed components as time has gone on, but it has made me less confident in their microphones. That being said, if the NW700 you have is working for you, then I say stick with it. If it ain't broke, as they say. :)
@@imJMB I also bought a NW8000 XLR mic. I bought it to replace the usb mic, but it sounds awful. Some days it sounds really good, other is trash. But iv seen videos with people loving the mic and saying is great for the price. Theirs sounded 1million times better. So yeah idk what's going on with that (yes I have a phantom power box). But I was hoping that was just me and a one time thing, hopefully the new usb mics I'm getting soon will be good, I wonder how common this problem is...
I wish I could answer that for you, but my hands on experience is limited. What I can tell you is that I've seen several Neewer Mics go through this. They seem to manufacture a set of microphones well for a period of time, and then something changes. The same model microphone released a few months apart some times sounds vastly different. When it comes to budget products like this, I expect some flaws and inconsistencies...it's just part of the package when you're saving money. However, the night and day different in audio quality with some of these microphones is just unacceptable in my opinion.
If the recent ones you've picked up don't work out, take a look at some of the Fifine products. I'm in the process of doing a review with them right now for the K658, but they've got more budget friendly options than that one. I can't recommend a specific one, because the K658 is my first hands on experience, but they're making a name for themselves and might be worth looking into.
Right now my favorite USB Condenser is the Majority RS Pro (which I did a review of), but they're sold out everywhere, and I'm not sure if or when they'll be in stock again. :(

I know the BM line of mics are similar to the NW's line. Maybe they have better quality controll

As far as I know, you shouldn't. When I plugged it into my Windows 7 PC it just detected it as a microphone without issue. :) Hope this helps!

I wish I had a good answer for you, but unfortunately I don't have any hands on experience with the NW7000. My best suggestion would be to look up the most recent reviews of the NW7000 that you can find, listen to the audio quality and discern which one sounds best to you. I say that because with the NW-700 first came out, the reviews for that mic sounded amazing, but years later when I purchased mine...well, I just assume throw those mics in the garbage now. :( Things change over time I'm afraid.

When it comes to streaming, I think you're unlikely to notice any measurable difference between 16 bit and 24 bit, regardless of the microphone in question, especially for dialogue. Even if there IS an audible difference pertaining strictly to the bitrate, by the time everything goes through the normal compression that comes with streaming, whatever difference there is will likely be unnoticeable to most folks.
My new streaming mic is the RS Pro by Majority, and I love it. It's more expensive than the USB200, but it's well worth it in my opinion. Honestly, I can't recommend it enough. You can find it on Amazon, and right now it's $49.95 USD. Additionally, you can use the promo code 10IMJMB10 to get an additional 10% off of your order (that promo code expires on August 31st though).
If that is out of your price range, you can do worse than the USB200, but it really wouldn't be my first choice, if for no other reason than the noise floor.

how far away are you from the mic while talking?
I try to stay somewhere between 8 - 12 inches away from the diaphragm depending on which microphone I'm using. I know that some people prefer to utilize the proximity effect that comes with getting close to the microphone, which is why I leaned into it at about 2:50 , but like I mentioned in the video, that tends to accentuate mouth sounds, plosives, etc, so I avoid it when I can.

Hi Ryan. If you've got the mic plugged in, it should be very simple.
If Discord doesn't detect the microphone automatically, click the cog near your name, go to "Voice & Video", and under the input device drop down menu, select the microphone.
Similarly, setting that microphone as your default input device in Windows can be a big help also. In Windows 10, simply right click the speaker icon by your clock, go to "Open Sound Settings", and under input where you see "Choose your input device", once again select your microphone from the drop down menu, and you should be all set. :)
You should consider being a book narrator.

Dose it make hissing noises a lot ?
Unfortunately, yes, I did notice some hissing that comes from this microphone. This video was shot in a treated room/studio environment, and while the air conditioning was running (which will naturally lead to some background noise), I barely noticed any hiss at all when using the NW700 and NW-3U, leading me to conclude that the hiss is from the USB200.
All of the audio clips in this video are raw and unprocessed, with the exception of the short period of time that I demonstrate the sound of the USB200 with the free Reaper EQ, so the hissing noise is present in the video, to give you an idea of how much there is.
That being said, the hiss can be done away with by using some basic processing using a plugin like RX 7, or even the Denoiser in a free copy of Audacity. :)
For live streaming, if you're using something like OBS, it also has a denoise function that will help. However, for things like Skype/Zoom/Discord calls, I'm afraid the hiss is just something that anyone using the USB200 will just have to deal with.
