Same! Lol We have grocery lists that are linked on our phones. All I have to do is tell him that I have added items to the list that I will need soon. He only gets what is on the list.
Awesome tips! I’m curious about keeping tomatoes for salads and cucumbers. For avocados, I’ve started letting them ripen, then I cut them in half, scoop them out, and freeze the halves individually. Then I put them in a freezer bag and pull them out as I need them. I don’t find that they get mushy that way.
Just a little tip you don’t have to pour out any of the milk the little indentations in the side is specially designed for that giving it room to expand in the freezer.
For letuce, I put them in damp cloth in my fridge It last longer and keeps the crunchiness of it ! When your letuce is a Little bit sloppy you put it in your sink full of cold water. After few hours you will have a brand New letuce ! Sorry for my english I am from France
I use heavy cream for my coffee each day (so clearly it takes awhile to use it up). I prefer to buy a half gallon at Costco. My mom (how do they always know everything? 😊) taught me to pinch the carton top with a clothespin to keep it sealed tighter and last longer. I found that helpful and took it a step further-I split it into two quart sized glass mason jars with plastic lids. One goes waaaaay to the back of my fridge so it has less change in temp from door opening and closing. It is VERY rare that any of it starts smelling funny. If any, it’s the bottom of the barrel, just a few tablespoons worth. For me, I just hate shopping so I like to go as little as possible. I usually go twice a month, tops. Plus, groceries are expensive!😅😂😂
I hope this might be of value. Wash all of your produce in vinegar. The bacteria that would cause the vegies to go bad is washed away. Then package it with paper towels or napkins.
🇦🇺When I was little we lived in a small town in the Northern Territory (NT). Daily waters had 27 people in it. My parents went to the shops every 3 months as the closest store was 3 1/2 hours away. Occasionally my dad would fix trucks or machinery for cattle stations and get meat in return.
I store my avocados whole in my crisper drawer for my veggies in the fridge. They stay hard for a very long time. When you want to eat them place them on the countertop to ripen up. For lettuce I cut it up and put in mason jars and vacuum seal the lids. It lasts for weeks like that.
Great video! Would love a part 2 with additional fruit and veggies. I do love putting cut celery in Mason jars with water. Keeps all month. Will try some of your other storage tips. Thanks!
I was so guilty about wasting avocados that I had stopped buying them in case I couldn't use them before they spoiled. I'm definitely trying your tip for storing those!! Thanks!!
Thank you for the tips, especially on the avocados. We are a family of 2 so I’m not purchasing fresh produce from Costco or Azure Standard but I still like to keep my produce fresh as long as possible. Undoubtedly the upfront cost of Tupperware is a factor but I love love love my Tupperware FridgeSmart containers. I’ve had mine for over 20 years so they have more than paid for themselves. I can keep celery, carrots & lemons for 2 months, lettuce that’s still on its core for 1 month easily, and even softer veg like peppers and cucumbers for at least 3 weeks in them. If you’re not trying to store large quantities or giant sized produce, I highly recommend those containers! (And no, I am not a dealer lol) I don’t see that they currently have the xtra long sized one that holds 2 celery bunches on their site right now but in the medium deep size I can usually fit 2 heads of iceberg, 3 to 4 heads of romaine, 2lb bag of carrots, 4-6 peppers, etc just to give everyone some idea of its size if anyone is interested.
I've had Tupperware fridge smarts for 15-20 years, too. Sometimes, I'm a fan, and other times, not so much. Depends on the produce item. And it depends on whether I wash and prep beforehand.
Yes , I would love to watch your video on how to plan a grocery list for the month ! I would like to start doing the same and get more tips and tricks to do so. Thank you so much for the time you dedicate to filming and editing your videos. I love to watch them. You inspire me to do more meal prepping and freezer meals.
We are starting our homestead this spring, now that we have the land. That being said we have decided to buy organic stuff in bulk that we can't grow ourselves. So, we have decided that doing monthly grocery shopping trips would be better for us and this helped us ALOT! Thank you so much for sharing!
I buy the larger container of heavy cream and put what I don’t use in my Souper Cubes then freeze them in 1 cup increments. Then I thaw on the counter in a wide mouth pint jar.
Wow, wow, wow! Amazing tips Adaline. It's so cool you had the patience and determination to experiment with these preservation methods. Thank you for sharing these tried and true methods. Thank you for all your research! So, over Thanksgiving I found an unopened box of cream cheese that had somehow fallen behind a drawer in my fridge. It expired in June of 2023. I was curious, so I opened it and also opened a new box I bought that doesn't expire until January 2024. In comparison, the expired box looked, smelled, and tasted EXACTLY the same as the new cream cheese. I was shocked enough I did a blind sniff and taste test on my husband and kids. They couldn't tell a difference either.
I keep our shelves stocked with shelf ready items and our freezer is packed every 3 months. And then we shop weekly for milk and fresh fruits/veg to minimize food waste. The way we got this way was when we would get our tax return each year, we first bought an upright freezer and then bought meats and frozen fruits/veg to fill it and then we bought shelf stable foods and household products. The $ we supposedly saved each pay period on not buying these items, went into an envelope minus the fresh items needed, then each quarter (every 3 months) we would go bulk meat, frozen, shelf stable and household items- we always started with meat and frozen, then went down the line of shelf to household- when the $ ran out (we both went so he picked the items out and I kept running tally on, back then a handheld calculator and now my phone) so I knew we were done- always keeping a cushion for taxes so we didn’t go over budget. After 40 years of marriage, no more tax returns (we made sure to make adjustments where we either got no more than $100 back or broke even), we still shop this way. CAUTION: only buy in bulk those items you use daily or weekly, don’t get caught up in bulk buying for items you rarely use- if you are not a regular baker, then don’t buy flour or sugar in bulk, if you don’t like canned fruits or veggies then buy just enough for emergency back up, don’t waste your money on rarely used items. A good blog to go to is The Cross Legacy when it comes to storing fresh fruits and veggies- amazing methods to keep those items fresh for weeks!
I’ve never gone a month between shopping but I store my romaine lettuce by rinsing and then wrapping in bar towels (thin cotton towels) and then in a plastic container. I just found your channel and I love it
I wash lettuce in vinegar then I dry on towel after using salad spinner. Once fully dried I put in the large Rubbermaid brilliance with paper towels and all my lettuces stay fresh.
I shop once a month as well. I meal plan 28 dinners assuming we will eat out once and have a night that we just eat popcorn or something. We eat the same seven breakfasts four weeks in a row and lunch is sandwiches or leftovers. I plan the meals towards the beginning of the month that have the more perishable vegetables in them so I don't don't really have to worry about storing things a particular way. I used your celery storage method last month and was able to make a bag of celery last into this second month and it is still looking great. That was a great tip! I seem to buy and waste so much celery because I never knew how to store it. Thanks!
I want to start grocery shopping once a month. It’s a real source of anxiety and depression and issues for me, and I believe there is a much better way to simplify it. Do you also have videos about your meal planning?
When my avocados are ripe (and I don't have plans for using them), I will open them up, slice them and freeze the slices on a parchment lined cutting board for half day or until they are frozen. Don't stack them unless you want them to freeze together! I will, then, put the slices in a silicone zip pouch (or use whatever you freeze things in). I will pop a couple slices in my morning smoothie. You don't taste them, it adds healthy fat AND makes your smoothie very creamy. I don't like my smoothies without them anymore!!
I usually slightly damp a paper towel wrap the whole lettuce without washing place in a ziplock bag squeeze as much of the air without crushing them. They will last a month. That's saying a lot for me because my fridge is always icy and then melts on its getting warm!! I received lettuce that was fresh but left in a hot car for a couple hours. Did the method and it still lasted 4 weeks it even looked better than when i got it 😮 oh and this works for other leafy greens too.
We eat a small salad almost every night so i like to have veggies prepped. For romaine I like to cut up 2 heads wash in my salad spinner spin to dry put in a gallon bag w a few paper towels and lasts the whole week
Carrots keep very well in the fridge but if they start to go bad I peel and trim them and put them in an airtight container filled with water and this extends their life for about 2 more weeks. Change the water every time you take some out.
We are planning to move soon. Living in our camper for some time, this video will be a huge help. The shopping plan would be extremely helpful as well. My current system will require a major overhaul for our move. Thank you so much for sharing all of your videos.
I don't currently shop once a month but I do tend to stock up on things. I always check expiration dates and so many things have later dates, including cheeses. I used to always wrap both my lettuce and celery in foil and yes, it helps it last for a long time. I don't use foil at this time, but I do find that even if I wash the produce, which people say not to wash ahead of time, and I store it in an open bag with a paper towel or towel, that I can get them to last a long time. I also line my produce drawer with a towel, just for any extra air moisture. Great tips Adaline!
Another great way to store fresh mushrooms is to put them in a paper bag in the fridge. I have yet to try your method so i don't know which is better but I do know that the paper bag works wonderfully well!
Thankyou for this! I created a menu plan a few months ago and at the time, worked well. But as time went on it became boring and i stopped doing it. But continued to buy the same groceries. Which led to stress and trying to rush and make sure all veggies and perishables were used in time so they didnt spoil. Which led to guilt that money was going to waste. Im on the verge of another shop and want to get on the wagon again. And move to monthly shopping and make healthier choices. Family of 8 and trying to work out how to transition to monthly shopping while keeping everyone fed.
Great video! Thank you. It's like you were in my brain this morning as I am getting ready to go grocery shopping again and hate doing it every week! I would love to see more videos like this. Just add it to the list of what you already do. I have been following you for over a year and love your content!
Do you k ow about Shelf stable milk? I keep two or three on hand incase milk goes bad or is out and I don't wanna go into the store for just milk. All the dairy free and also dairy milk including goats milk come in shelf stable tetra packs A chunk of hard cheese lasts way long. If you get a little mold on the outside it's OK to cut of of hard cheese only.
Alaskan carrots are the most delicious and we look forward to when they show up in huge bags at our stores. However they are only there for a bit. I remove them from the bag and wrap 6-8 in packets of foil and keep them in my crisper drawer and they will last for most of our looooong winter!
Thank you so much for your very informative video. During winter, we reduce our grocery shopping trips because we live in the outskirts of the city. Our winters are brutal and the weather conditions are severe so we have to minimize our time on the road. For that reason we eat a lot of frozen veggies and fruits. I will try the avocados in the water tip and the lettuce wrapped in foil. Take care and God bless from Ontario Canada.🦌🍁🍂🐿❤P.S. The little cactus garden you inspired me to make is now growing wonderfully in our living room!❤
I have grocery shopped monthly for many years. It is now just habit. During the pandemic when pick up became available at our Wal-Mart I started doing that. My store does a really good job at selecting produce, etc. I still use this service most of the time.
I have that same box cheese shredder. Love freshly shredded cheese😃 I have the Rada cheese knife. Super cheap too. It’s 100% better than any cheese slicer lol. Rada are the only knives I use.
Hello Adaline! I truly loved this video! It’s full of great information! One question I had was on how to make the nut milk. Do you happen to have a video about that? Thanks so much for all the tips and tricks……I really appreciated it. 😊
I love all these tips! Do you need to wait for the avocados to be a little ripe before putting them in a jar of water or can you put them in hard straight from the grocery store?
I used to do this. Our grocery bill has sky rocketed and I have been trying to figure out how to bring it down since it is the only bill we have that can fluctuate (others are set by companies like insurance and such) so I am drsprately trying to lower it. I totally forgot that I used to shop monthly to save money. I believe I stopped bc we really need a second fridge to be able to do it! We now have 4 kiddos. But, we got a bigger main fridge so maybe I can swing it! I do still buy HUGE quantities of non perishables from BBs (in PA, maybe you know of it! It is 1hr from us in Baltimore) and store them in the basement, but I never really have a plan for that food and found it was just extra money being spent 😅 Anywayyy thank you for the reminder and tips!
If you just refuse to go to the store, you will be forced to make use of these items..lol. Just like in the old days when going to the store was very limited.
I will definitely try the foil wrapped lettuce trick. I buy lactose free milk since it has longer dates on it. Tastes the same as regular but easier to digest. That equals less waste for us.
Thank you! I place celery-unwashed in slightly damp paper towel and roll that in foil. I've kept it a couple months. On the romaine-do you wash, cut core and wrap only in foil? Would you please give steps? I usually wash, let air dry till just slightly damp, then portion several leaves in paper towel rolled up and in zip lock bag... Uses so much paper towel I'd like to try your method.
Love this! It would be so hard for me to not go a month without the store my kids eat at least a bunch of bananas every other day (I have 4 boys 12, 10 twins, and 6). I buy 8/10 gallons of milk at Costco and freeze it immediately every month have been doing this for almost 15 years best hack! It surprises people all the time that you can freeze milk.
Yes, I would definitely like to hear about how you make a list for a month of groceries.
I love to only shop every 8-12 weeks. My husband will pick up milk and other perishables on his way home from work as needed.
Hubby is always willing to pick up a few items on the way home because he can stick to a list and I can not. 🙂 It is a running joke in our family.
Absolutely love this!
Same! Lol
We have grocery lists that are linked on our phones. All I have to do is tell him that I have added items to the list that I will need soon. He only gets what is on the list.

Yes!!! I would love if you made another video on bulk/month shopping lists! Loved this one 🤍
Just a little tip you don’t have to pour out any of the milk the little indentations in the side is specially designed for that giving it room to expand in the freezer.
Dehydrate....i love my green peppers and mushrooms....
Just an fyi, the FDA doesn't recommend storing Avocado in water because it can lead to bacteria growth.
For letuce, I put them in damp cloth in my fridge It last longer and keeps the crunchiness of it ! When your letuce is a Little bit sloppy you put it in your sink full of cold water. After few hours you will have a brand New letuce ! Sorry for my english I am from France
You did great...
I keep the celery and carrots wrapped in foil like the lettuce they will keep in the crisper drawer this way for a month
Very helpful, Adaline! Thank you! And I would absolutely LOVE to see a video on your actual grocery lists and what you purchase for what purposes.

Would like to see how you meal plan for the month.
And can your butter.
And more meal prepping.
You're really good at what you do. 😊
Cheese freezes well and I cut up summer squash, blanch and then freeze.
I hope this might be of value. Wash all of your produce in vinegar. The bacteria that would cause the vegies to go bad is washed away. Then package it with paper towels or napkins.
Does it leave a faint vinegar taste?
🇦🇺When I was little we lived in a small town in the Northern Territory (NT). Daily waters had 27 people in it. My parents went to the shops every 3 months as the closest store was 3 1/2 hours away. Occasionally my dad would fix trucks or machinery for cattle stations and get meat in return.
Thank you!! I'm a visual learner. I would love to see how this is done (storing the produce).
Yes! Please make a video about how you plan your grocery list for a month!
Oh I would loooove to See a list planning Video. I need more Infos. Love your Videos ❤
I love Debbie Meyer green bags. I can keep veggies twice as long in the bsgs
I would definitely love to see how you plan a monthe worth of stuff to buy
I enjoyed very much . also would love to see how you come up with your meal plan .❤❤❤❤
I store my avocados whole in my crisper drawer for my veggies in the fridge. They stay hard for a very long time. When you want to eat them place them on the countertop to ripen up.

This concept is so exciting to me!!
You are so welcome!! I hope it was helpful to you!

I switched from ziploc bags to silicone bags. They work amazing and my freezer, fridge, cabinets looks so neat
I’ve never gone a month between shopping but I store my romaine lettuce by rinsing and then wrapping in bar towels (thin cotton towels) and then in a plastic container.
I just found your channel and I love it
Yes, please share how to plan for a monthly grocery shop.
This was so educational Adaline. I'm trying to learn and get educated to be able to shop less often. I can't wait for the next ones.
Thank you! And thanks for watching! 😊😊
Thank you for the information very helpful. I have done Romain lettuce wrapping in paper towels and store in gallon plastic bags.
Yes we need the list!!! 😊
I wash lettuce in vinegar then I dry on towel after using salad spinner. Once fully dried I put in the large Rubbermaid brilliance with paper towels and all my lettuces stay fresh.

I don't need or want to do once a month grocery shopping but I'm always looking for ways to get my produce to last longer. Thanks for the tips
I usually slightly damp a paper towel wrap the whole lettuce without washing place in a ziplock bag squeeze as much of the air without crushing them. They will last a month. Great tip on avocados. 🥑
Helpful tips on produce storage. Thank you!
We eat a small salad almost every night so i like to have veggies prepped. For romaine I like to cut up 2 heads wash in my salad spinner spin to dry put in a gallon bag w a few paper towels and lasts the whole week
Thank you for this very informative video!
Excellent video! Thank you!!
Some good tricks! I knew about the water for carrots and celery, but will try for avocado and the aluminum for lettuce! ❤
This was very informative. Great info! Thank you!
Carrots keep very well in the fridge but if they start to go bad I peel and trim them and put them in an airtight container filled with water and this extends their life for about 2 more weeks. Change the water every time you take some out.

Great tips. You can store cottage cheese in the frig upside down. It lasts weeks longer.
This is so good to know!

You can do it! It felt so overwhelming when I started. But one step at a time and you'll figure out what works for you!
Would enjoy a shopping list 🌿
Great video! Thank you. It's like you were in my brain this morning as I am getting ready to go grocery shopping again and hate doing it every week! I would love to see more videos like this. The foil works great for celery also. I’ve had it last for 4-5 weeks
I've heard this as well! Thanks for the tip!
Do you k ow about Shelf stable milk? I keep two or three on hand incase milk goes bad or is out and I don't wanna go into the store for just milk.
All the dairy free and also dairy milk including goats milk come in shelf stable tetra packs
A chunk of hard cheese lasts way long. If you get a little mold on the outside it's OK to cut of of hard cheese only.
Great tips! Thanks.
Yes, please meal plan for a month shopping list, I want to do that
We eat a lot of avocado so I will definitely try your tip. Thanks
I would love to see a video on your grocery list prep.
Wrap the top of your bananas with plastic wrap, it is supposed to help keep them from spoiling too fast. Great video!
Oh yes! I forgot about this idea! Thanks!
Alaskan carrots are the most delicious and we look forward to when they show up in huge bags at our stores. However they are only there for a bit. I remove them from the bag and wrap 6-8 in packets of foil and keep them in my crisper drawer and they will last for most of our looooong winter!

I would LOVE to hear your planning
I have grocery shopped monthly for many years. It is now just habit. During the pandemic when pick up became available at our Wal-Mart I started doing that. My store does a really good job at selecting produce, etc. I still use this service most of the time.
Yes! This is such a great option to do a monthly pick up! Then you really won't have the temptation of impulse buying! Thanks for the tip!
How do you meal prep for the month? I want to see that video. I would like to do that.
Very good information! Definitely going to try the avocado tip!
Great video, Adaline! I'll have to try the romaine/foil method 😊.
Very interesting!!
Great information!❤️
Avocado in freezer is good for smoothies
Yes! I've diced them an froze them for this as well! Thanks for tip!
I love your videos Adaline, you give us great information. ❤
Great video
I have that same box cheese shredder. Love freshly shredded cheese😃
I have the Rada cheese knife. Super cheap too. It’s 100% better than any cheese slicer lol. Rada are the only knives I use.
👍😊
Love this video thank you❤❤
Hello Adaline! I truly loved this video! It’s full of great information! One question I had was on how to make the nut milk. Do you happen to have a video about that? Thanks so much for all the tips and tricks……I really appreciated it. 😊
When i need a avocado faster to ripen i put it in the apple basket
It is 1hr from us in Baltimore) and store them in the basement, but I never really have a plan for that food and found it was just extra money being spent 😅
Anywayyy thank you for the reminder and tips!
Yes, we need YOUR grocery list 😂 please
Spinach freezes well
You can buy shelf stable nut milk
Cucumbers are my biggest struggle.
They are one of my next test subjects! haha I want to figure out how to keep them longer as well 😊
@@AdalineZook Try wrapping them in aluminum foil!
Ok question about the avacados. Do you buy them unriped green and hard and then store them? Or do you buy them ripe black and a little soft?
I am interested in a list to plan meals and a shopping list for a month.
do you put avocados in the jar with water in the refrigerator? Or just leave on the counter?
do you put the avocados in the jar of water when they're still green? or perfectly ripe?
Do you need to move it to another container as liquid expands when it freezes?
