Just an addition here: you mentioned using the features from the Ranger in Tasha's! Something that should be mentioned is that you could also pick the Ranger's Druidic Warrior fighting style that they get access to now, granting 2 druid cantrips so you can have Shillelagh without Magic Initiate! This opens up another feat slot for something like Crusher to boost your passive utility or Alert so you can make that +8 Initiative a +13!

Of course, Peryton's aren't exactly easy to make into mounts, so... may be a bit tricky.

    Offbeat Outlaw:
    How to play a monk.
Just multiclass fighter and ranger, and rely on those abilities to do all your damage.
This was 5 levels of monk, 3 ranger and 2 fighter. For 8 attacks.
You could also just do 5 ranger, 2 fighter for 7 attacks by dual wielding weapons. The monk levels add almost nothing for damage.
Astral self costs a ki point to enter. So you only have 4 ki points for stunning strike. That sounds like a lot, but by level 10, a good build can just kill the enemy in 1 round instead of stunning them. Unless it is a legendary creature, but most of those have really good constitution saves, so you likely only get to strip off 1 of their legendary resistances. With all the multiclassing you do, you don't get enough ki to be an effective monk.
Also this build has 3 bonus actions required to be fully set up.
    - Shillelagh
    - Hunter's mark
    - Astral self
So finally be turn 4 you can start utilizing your extra martial arts attack you get from monk as a bonus action. Or start using flurry of blows. But more realistically you have to move your hunter's mark because the target is dead.
I notice this a lot of Offbeat outlaw builds, they can have 1 really good turn, if everything is set up right. But you don't consider how hard / easy it is to set those things up.
If by any chance Offbeat Outlaw reads this. Here is the main tip to improve your builds. Ask yourself. If I can't prepare for combat. What do I do on turn 1, 2 and 3. If the answer is mostly set up stuff for the future, you should probably rethink the build. In the case of this build, you should cut out some of the bonus action stuff, because you can't use it all anyway.
I would cut Shillelagh to begin with. Your staff won't be as accurate, but by level 5, you can switch to using your fists only, and not lose much.

    • @OffbeatOutlaw
      @OffbeatOutlaw  3 года назад

I make one turn nova builds because those are the ones people like to watch on RUclips. I’ve made other builds that don’t require as much set up and are more consistent but nobody watched them.
This build is particularly tricky to get just right but I acknowledge that in the video.
Keep in mind, not every build is meant to be used, sometimes it can be just interesting to see what you can do for the sake of it.
I realize this content might not be for everyone, but these videos are fun for me to make which is the only way i judge whether or not I should do something. Worsts comes to worst you miss out on 20 avg damage and the average Nova damage is 90, which is still great and you can do that by turn 3.
And I ain’t looking for advice on my builds, they do exactly what I need them to.

RAW the roar targets creatures of your choice within 10 feet of you that can hear you. So that within 10 feet technically softcaps your range. Fun overrule for a DM though if they're on board. I feel like one workaround could be that anyone who heard it could make the saving throw. Immediately if heard while within 10ft of you, or the next time they ever find themselves within 10 feet of the mighty lion.

The problem with your first turn explosion is that hunter's mark and flurry of blows are both a bonus action, and that's assuming you saw the encounter coming far enough in advance to cast shillelagh and get your astral arms out. So I haven't done the math, it's almost 6 am as I'm typing this out and I am the tired. But I wanted to give what I thought was a good/simple monk build at higher levels. Step 1: Take Kensei at level 3. Step 2: Once you hit level 17 put levels into fighter until you're a level 20 character. Have a finesse weapon and at some point take defensive duelist. As a fighter take battlemaster and take duelist. If you do it right you can have a fuck ton of AC and be even better at hitting with your Kensei weapon which I should recommend a rapier as you'll need it for this. If people want I can do the math for the best possible AC for this with this build but not right now.
    ......
Nevermind I just did and the best possible AC with just a rapier and nudity is 28. You get 20 if you max out dex and wisdom (as you should) an extra 2 thanks to Agile Parry, and on a reaction you can add your prof bonus which will be 6 at this point so you'll have 28 total AC. Tell anything dumb enough to attack you to suck your amazing monk abs.

ehm, monk druid multiclassing is hillarious, because according to wildshape rules you can do flurry of blows as a bear (or whatever creature), so you can call it the worst for minmaxing, but if you are wanting to make the most powerful (insert beast here) build, druid/barbarian/monk is obvs the best option. Personally I'd lovw to see battlemaster and assasin beasts tho

You can ignore the quarterstaff if you take Unarmed Fighter as your fighting style. You do 1d6 for unarmed attacks (1d8 if you have no armor or shield, as a monk why would you). This will allow you to start the the fight attacking instead of casting a cantrip and then waiting for the next turn to attack.
Also grapple the target. Technically if you grapple the target you can attack them with your astral arms, all with advantage since they are prone. Your fighting style also allows you to do 1d4 damage to a grappled target at the start of your turn.
Also Unarmed Strike. Let’s you do an unarmed strike (due) with your bonus action. So that would be a total of 9 attacks. I don’t think you mentioned that, or I did not hear it.

Why didn't you use the bugbear race and one of the strixhaven backgrounds?
Bugbear would increase the damage by 16d6 and you could still get that cantrip I can't spell with the druidic warrior fighting style. Then strixhaven initiate would give you more spells.
BTW enjoy salty cake (putting your last two levels of redemption paladin into fighter)
And I feel like you could do hexblade warlock instead of monk and go charisma based with a double bladed scimitar for potentially even more damage, since you could have hex for 2d6 instead of hunters mark for 1d6, you would have a better damaging weapon, you could use plate armor if your first two levels were in fighter, you could have the eldritch invocation that acts like extra attack, you'd have hexblade's curse (extra 4 damage per attack), and you could have eldritch smite for another handful of d8s.

So I am going to let you know about a monk multi class I've done and how good she actually is. Her name is Serena Delmare she is a Way of the 4 elements monk mixed with a Tempest cleric. Now normally These 2 classes wouldn't have much synergy but thanks to Tasha's I have the ability to create one dedicated weapon and in her case it's an enchanted rapier called quickling's ivy. So in summary I have a monk who thanks to her cleric side can wield martial weapons. I have in a lot of ways made a character who is a literal and figurative force of nature. And other fun bonus while she doesn't wear armour she actually is fully able to thanks to her cleric proficiencies which came in real handy when she had to disguise herself as a guard one time.

  • @superiorus999

Why not take the unarmed fighting style and take something more useful for your feat? Or even use another race? You'll be doing d8 damage with your unarmed strikes that use wisdom and won't need the shillelagh bonus action. You could be an aasimar and add a lot of damage once per long rest or take as a feat crusher and have more health as well as a pretty high chance of giving all of your allies advantage
Also, yeah damage, but with straight monk you get a higher cd and 10 ki points which seem a little better than a situational burst of damage. Dunno, your builds sound like all you gotta do is pump up the damage situationally and you're fine, while in my games damage is a really small part of the equation, and a level 5 wizard casting sleet storm could have a bigger impact than any of these "powerplay" builds. Like what do you do when you get attacked without being able to prepare with your 5 ki points at level 10? And what if you have 2 encounters in a short rest and can't regain action surge? What if the enemy has a lot of health and your initial burst doesn't do all that much?

One could argue that when you cast "Hunters Mark" that signifies the "...first round (start of) combat..." which Dread Ambusher says is the only time you can use it. If that is true, then you can't use "Flurry of blows" because it is a Bonus action and you used that for "Hunter's Mark"... Thoughts? If one dies the other may still be able to live, no matter which one is slain (there are consequences though). However it does have some of the same functions like creating the clone on the other side of some prison bars and coalescing on that side, for example.
For a long time I wanted to play a character able to create clones, then echo knight appeared and it was fun until I realized I was killing versions of my character over and over by using the echo abilities. It was kinda creepy.
I am aware how an extra character could break action economy, but it's a monk. At best it can do double damage for a couple of turns (which is not saying much) and then it's more about the versatility.

The Echo knight’s ability to summon alternate timeline versions of itself is really just flavor text and has no mechanical impact on the character. The monk is kind of a lackluster class at high levels, so I can understand why you’d want to homebrew a solution that doubles your damage output (and possibly ki points) but couldn’t this just as easily be achieved by using an item that lets you cast wish or asking a high level NPC?
