You were hearing a Talk Box. It's a device that channels the guitar sound into a plastic tube that the guitarist Adam Jones uses his mouth to shape the sound of the guitar back into a microphone. The guitar substitutes the sound of the vocal cords, Originally invented in 1938 by jazz steel guitarist Alvino Rey. Pete Drake and his "talking Steel Guitar" was around in the 50's and it wasn't until audio wizard Bob Heil made one for Joe Walsh to use on the song Rocky Mountain Way that it became used commercially. At the same time Bob Heil made one for Walsh he was doing work for Peter Frampton and Peter had to have one. He wrote Do You Feel Like We Do for the talk box that gave it much wider popularity. David Gilmour used one for his Solo on the song Pigs for the Pink Floyd album Animals and that is my favorite use of the Talk Box.
Have you seen the Danny Carey live drum cam video for the song Pneuma? It's from a tool concert in Boston and it shows the drummer only!! Amazing!!

The instrument used in the guitar solo is called a talk box. There is a tube running from the box that goes in your mouth. The tube routes the guitar sound up through the tube so it can be modified by moving your mouth. The sounds then picked up by a microphone in front of you.

Also, highly recommend listening with headphones or surround sound (like while driving). They play around a lot with spacial audio, sounds moving left to right or circling around you, etc. 🤘
