Sunak to fumble seats gained by Boris in ‘extraordinary’ loss | Hugo Swire

- “It is extraordinary to think here we had a year or so ago a Tory majority of 80 under Boris and we’re now talking about as many Tory seats being left after the election.”
The Conservative Party are heading towards a “extraordinary” loss as the electorate becomes more “volatile”, says Conservative peer Hugo Swire.

A Tory enacting precisely why people dislike the Tories. Deluded and arrogant
I liked him saying he doesn't think people want a general election at the moment. That's a Tory with his finger on the buzzer!!
The Tories greatest success was to convince the voters that it was a mainstream party.
Exactly, work with people on minimum wage who have been fooled into thinking they are middle class even though they a a few pay packets from being evicted, all staunch Tories.
Ah! So the Tory loss isn't the Tories' fault? Of course!
no no no it's the peasants' fault, the toffs can never be wrong. tory thinking 101 old boy.
The reason the Conservatives are in this mess is that their term of government has been totally appalling & economically disastrous.
@@planestrainsdogsncars4336 yeah-Swire's comments on "brexit benefits to come" was hilarious
@@lizardtattoo1 Brexit benefits what are the benefits of the EU not very rosie in that garden Cry harder lefty 🤡
We don't want popularity; we want competence.
You say that but I fear, would a popular character come along they may indeed wipe the floor. Luckily I expect we are going to ultimately get competence instead.
@@TimThatOnly if the next government continued in the same vein as the current one. If Labour did win, became a competent government free of scandal and voters could observe real improvements I’d be surprised if people wanted a change in 5 years.
If it’s just more of the same I can see real issues ahead though
@@TimThat The populist character has already come along and his name is Nigel Farage. You have been warned, he’s probably going to be the next PM after Starmer unless an alternative can become more electorally popular.
@@andrewcharlton6080I don’t think they will last 14 years like the Tories. If there is a major immigration or financial crisis, then Reform UK will win.
@@andrewcharlton6080 Labour make great change who was your maths teacher dianne Abbott 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Who is this guy? Going back to Thatcher and Regan ffs
he's an ideologue who was wrong in the 80's, and has never moved on.
He has to to try and find anything they've achieved.
@@monged4life442He’s trying as hard as Sunak, which is to say a bit too much but also not enough. 😂
The delusion is strong with this one.
Too right!
I hope the Tories never set foot in number 10 again .
100% They are Anti Human.:(
This bloke thinks people don't want a general election??????? What planet has he just arrived from?
People want rid of these scoundrels. The country are sick of their antics. Hugo seems as remote as Sunak. Even tories want them out we are exhausted. People want anything but tory. They want this to end.
So the government is exhausted but no one wants an election! Give me strength
My thoughts exactly, talk about a person who is literally trying to spin the best possible interpretation of a calamitous situation for his side.
No it's because we are sick and tired of tory lies. We are tired of your contempt for your own rules
How can that commentator say Sunak clearly won? He was a petulant child and wouldn’t answer a direct question
This guest is absolutely deluded.
It seems British politics overcrowded by clowns and pretenders .
Torys lie? Surely not Hugo!
A tory saying folk don't want an election, yeah ok mate, sure we don't 😂🤦♂
Ratboy won did he? I must’ve been watching something else..
The Tories dislike for the plebs is truly on show here... and yet they still wonder why the country is truly sick of them.
Is he really still trying to peddle the myth of Brexit dividends not having come through yet? Someone else tell him...
My god get the Tory’s out
Sunak losses seats because of Bosis and his hedge fund mates .People in this country were totally fed up with the Tories long before Sunak was PM .Alot of blame lands at Boris's feet.
Do you really believe that's why theh are going to loose seats? Are you on a different planet by any chance?
I think its not been a debate its been Rishi acting like he wants to fight him well not fight but throw 💩 from behind the settee "go on then! Go on then !" Very childish, empty vessels make the most noise
Why is it extraordinary, I cannot for the life of me understand why people vote Tory in the first place, they are not and never have been for the people of this country.
I've never understood a party sprouting cutting taxes. We pay taxes, so "WE" have a better society.
@@colofsco1 I agree, it simply doesn't make sense...
I am recently retired and still paying tax and to be honest I do believe when you retire your tax burden should stop. However as long as my tax is helping the people of this country I don't mind. Sunak came up with the ridiculous idea of scrapping NI, which among other things funds the state pension.
He also scrapped HS2 which was going to be the engine for British growth! Short-term austerity, classic Tory strategy! Still paying for Thatcherism to this day.
No one really votes for them it is rigged thy just exist to keep the divide going so tehy flip or flop between the two
Sunak was like and over excited boxer he came out Shadow boxing throwing punches at the air Keir Stamer just keep jabbing away getting points..
Sunak as per usual rude shouting talking over Keir Stamer...
Sunak was like one of this malfunctioning CB radio hams always on transmit never on receive..
Sunak is a petulant tantrum child
This is exactly what I saw too.
Neither of them had a single thing worth saying. Nothing but lies and gaslighting. If you vote for them you deserve the bad times they want to bring you.
"Sunak to fumble seats gained by Boris" is an odd way to express this. The current dismal position in the polls began at the tail end of Boris's time at Number 10. They were baked in by Truss's disastrous 40-odd days. What Sunak has done is to fail to reverse that process. He's not the one who cost them the seats, he's the one who's not been able to win them back. It's not clear there's anything he could have done, but we'll never know because it's difficult to think of anything he's done as Prime Minister that Boris would have handled differently.
Tories lie going in and lie going out. What a great endorsement for your party.
Roll on next Thursday, had enough of all these ‘experts’ and their analysis on what us peasants are really thinking and the endless Tory party nasal gazing
Yes, rather than 'experts' which gets them a big fee, they should be called 'commentators'. Well, at least that's a polite word
I don't suposse Times radio are thikning of disussing the polls from last night's debate that Starmer was judged a much more relatable and empathetic person than Sunak, or that Thatcher and her legacy and Johnson and his mendacity are now reviled by many, many people.
Thatcherism is the reason the British economy is declining. Austerity and tax cuts are short term shots in the arm that destroy long-term growth.
Trump tax cuts helped inflate stock prices for a couple years, but in the long run the lost government revenue keeps growth to a minimal level.
Companies generally just buy back their stock using the tax cut.
"Starmer was judged a much more relatable and empathetic perso" Such a naive comment. That character is one he's clearly rehearsed with his spin doctors. It bears no relation to his real nature which is duplicitous and sinister. How is this not obvious to you?
First of all because I have a more mature understanding of people than you do,j udging by your arrogant dismissal that I am naive just because I don't agree with you Seconly I have done a lot of research into the man,and the people who know and work with him and formed my own judgement and thirdly because unlike you I have not fallen for the propoganda of Corbynist cultists like Owen Jones and Novara Meda, and all his other student union armchair commentators.
When you are in government there is ‘no time for thinking’. Well that just sums up this Tory mess.
Is that Boris “The Liar” Johnson ?!?!
That's be him.
After the last 10+ years I YEARN for dull and boring politics. For someone who thinks that displaying some competence, decency, and practicality is a reliable strategy for a government wanting to win re-election.
More of this please 🙏
What a state we are as a country where as a political leader the policies you propose mean little compared to whether you can make people laugh.
BORIS LIED LIKE A CREEPY SLIMY TOAD
Sunak didn’t fumble the seats gains…. The people in those constituencies know. How badly they were lied to … unlike brexit they can vote to undo that decision
Boris passed them on to Sunak pre-fumbled.
More Tory bias
the aphrodite coming out the sea comment pretty much tells us everything we needed to know about these 2 public school idiots.
I have the thirst for change
Six years plus of putrid weak leadership and pillaging
Don't forget to mention many of the seats will be lost BECAUSE OF Johnson's baffoonery.
The cost of living has so increased that people are feeling the pinch and dont see that is going to change whichever government is elected and some will come to realise that after the election. Even politicians are betting - they must be feeling the pinch too.
Tories need to do to lend their vote to Reform if they want any chance of being a credible party in these five years or disappear forever
"Volatilty" is the new "Copium".
Rather disingenuous to attack Starmer over Taxing the state pension; That was only on the horizon because the current government continue with their stealth income tax increase with frozen tax allowances.
They have created this problem and now want praise (and votes) for partially correcting it for a proportion of the population. It's my understanding that even with the proposed increase in pensioner's tax allowances some on the old SERPS system will still be dragged into income tax. There is also the risk that if this increase doesn't reach the level that tax allowances would ordinarily have reached under the traditional annual increase pensioners are going to be paying more tax from even modest private and employment schemes than they otherwise would have.
Even the Tory voters hate the Tory party now.
PROBLEM WITH THE WORLD IS THE RICH ARE TOO RICH IN MOST COUNTRIES, AND PEOPLE ARE WAKING UP TO THEM BEING RIPPED OFF
I know the problem in this world it's GREED
The rubber boats out of respect for Sunak should declare a day off from crossing the channel
The people have wanted a GE since partygate
It looks like the Tories wouldn't make it out of the group stage and probably won't be one of the four best 3rd placed teams.
People were sold a pup with Brexit, saw the parties going on on the premises of those who had banned any parties or gatherings and then underwent the consequences of the "KamiKwasi" budget intended to launch post-Brexit "Singapore on Thames". It's a wonder there weren't actual riots.
Charisma is the very last thing we should look for in a leader, it always leads to disaster. Too many people still don't understand that.
I have yet to meet one person voting Tory next week.
Sunak supports the generals in Pakistan, not the people of Pakistan
Reform, not Tory/Labour!
Moderate and unshowy does not equal mediocre.
People don't remember that in 97 we had all the same arguments - no enthusiasm for Labour. They also forget that Reagan and Thatcher weren't that well regarded in their day either. Reagan was portrayed as elderly and clueless, Thatcher as shallow and insubstantial. Dissatisfaction with our leaders really isn't new!
I think we are coming to a time where whoever in power better produce results or they will be gone in the next election , the patience of the British people has just worn so thin with all the lies. We pay enough taxes we expect change this time.
Swires is well out of touch with reality here. He's going to have a rough week.
14 years and i am worse off financially, thats all i am voting on.
They let the cat out of the bag. Now the whole country can see what this class of Tory is like. Utterly repugnant to anyone decent.
This guy thinks it’s not like 1997 because people *don’t* think the Tories have “got to the end of the road and exhausted everyone’s patience”. ??????
Out of touch doesn’t even begin to describe this mindset.
Tax, Tory Tears 😭😭😭 ...
Everything Rishi Snake is saying repeated lies unfortunately he has very bad memory
I fail to see what was charismatic about Boris Johnson. The man looked a buffoon and was a buffoon. Totally incompetent. How any party can take an 80 seat majority and throw it away beats me.
Hugo Swire may want to rethink his analogy of Lib Dems being driven into the sea, then returning. That sounds a lot like Dunkirk followed by the Normandy invasion.
I'd have thought he wouldn't want to remind anyone of Sunak playing hooky from the D-Day commemorations.
You don’t want Rishi what ever your reasons are.Rishi knows what he is talking about.Keir was using last incidents to get at Rishi.
Thatcher was popular? only in England!
Indeed, she was much hated in Scotland, and still is.
Last nights audience was definitely biased towards women. Looking at the clothes that were visible there was a definite pretty colours. The person who chaired the contest was female and will have had her own prejuces. Why a question on "trans" issues was included just wasn't necessary especially when Sunak has made his feelings about trans people well known.
Volatility? He seems to think we owe him a living, as a member of the Lords. That might change.
SHAME ON YOU RISHI 🇵🇸
That tory bloke is talking utter hogwash. How deluded are these people?
Volitile electorate :) Get real, the Tories have achieved nothing of merit for the British population in 14 years. Worse they are leaving with a National debt that has doubled, and a lot Tories in westminster with a lot more personal wealth.
Only the times could say rishi winning a debate on immigration after his record of doing nothing to solve the issues that means we rely on immigration…
There are 20% of population for whom immigration is their top priority, and there is nothing wrong with that by the way. In 2019 they attached themselves to the Conservative Party that has been economically liberal since Thatcher and thus pro free trade in goods, services and people. That group, that has now gone to Reform, has very little overlap on policy with the Conservatives, has found a new home, even if it should have been SDP by policy match. Meanwhile the Conservatives have also more or less lost the professional classes because they have been anti business, anti competence and pro corruption and pro crime for a decade. This isn't volatility it is the rational actions of the voters.
Simple , Sunak is just not as good a liar as Boris.
Darren Jones.
to be fair to sunak he was just the last in a run of the worst prime minsters in our country's history. each did their bit
Farage's perennial pantomime performance - here today, gone tomorrow. Zero responsibility, zero accountability.
Sunak and Johnson...a couple of wrongens.
Months and months of protests and 0 accountability of war crimes bye rishiii 😂
Times Radio talking to itself.
Tories will become consigned to the history books.
And sunak was an exceptional leader....Yes !!! ???...watch the result of the General Election and that will settle any speculation / arguments and who is to blsme...
“Probably clearly won” 😂
doobe doobe do. Wibble. What exactly is this utter drivel. Is it journalism. I think not
So sunaks gonna cheat then theres a surprise its reform for me
These commentators have poor memories. Was there really that much enthusiasm for Tony Blair?
He was a great showman with great spin doctors, so they used music like "Things can only get better" to create the impression for enthusiasm, but Tony Blair only got 43% in that General Election, when the only significant minor party was the Lib Dems.
If Starmer's Labour gets 40%, with a combined 34% going to Reform, Lib Dems and Green, that'll be a reflection of how much more fragmented our politics now is, not how popular Tony Blair was.
As for Labour not giving detail of what they would do, in 1997 Blair produced a pledge card with five pledges, which was ridiculed at the time as lacking in substance.
As for enthusiasm for Thatcher, was there much enthusiasm for her in 1979, even among Tories? I don't think it was until her twin victories over Argentina and Scargill that this enthusiasm started.
I will vote Tories.. I believe in sunak..labour don’t have plans
Delusional
Thatcher is not respected
If course she is - you are clearly incapable of looking at this dispassionately.
She is respected throughout much of the world, regardless of what nasty parochial left wingers might think.
Vote reform ❤❤❤its the only way ❤❤❤ your last chance ❤❤❤
Johnson wasn't charismatic ...he was a buffoon, not a serious person.
In the end regarding Brexit he resorted to a coin toss as to his view, no intellect in that at all.
You argue against yourself.
If the guy is a Buffoon and not a serious person, then clearly he must've won people over with his charisma.

It seems by losing Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson, British politics has lost two leaders who could inspire people not only in Britain but globally.
