In the case of the 98 Niners, they had a very good offense, and a defense that was average, and had regressed from having been very good overall the prior years and showed their age (they had I believe four starters who were over age 30, two of them Merton Hanks and Tim McDonald were in the secondary, and had lost defensive player of the year Dana Stubblefield in free agency).
That solid, 12-4 team in 1998 was the Niners’ last postseason with Steve Young, and the end of a stretch of 16 consecutive 10+ win seasons, and a stretch from 1983 to the first quarter of 1999 where they had a win percentage on par with Alabama all time.

@@JahNuhThunDeeTheOneAndOnlyThey had a very good, balanced attack indeed. I think however that making the NFC Championship Game and losing to Minnesota was probably their ceiling that year. They made it past Green Bay in a close game, lost to Atlanta in a close game, and in the latter, they benefited from the bad call on the fumble where Terry Kirby was ruled down (though credit them for executing and staying in the game m). An end of a very successful era.

There is something to be said about a team peaking too early and then stumbling mid or late season, which seems to be what killed all the other historically great offenses.
An explosive offense can rack up points and yards and put the league on notice, but that's the thing, it PUTS THE LEAGUE ON NOTICE. Good coaches and defensive players will study that tape ferociously for that upcoming matchup, and the added stress of those tighter, more demanding contests creates avenues for injury or upsets.
This is an even bigger factor in the playoffs, where all these teams inevitably crashed back down to earth. If anything, this tells me the Dolphins are a playoff lock, but that they'll like meet their match in the divisional or championship round vs. an elite defense.

    • @thepubknight6144

The 99 Rams actually had a top 5 defense that definitely was a factor in them winning that Superbowl, both the NFC championship and Superbowl games the team only allowed 21 pts 5 to bucs and 16 to titans
Cause that next season they almost allowed 500 pts and that was a record for most points allowed in NFL History
And lost in the first round
Next year their defense was ranked 6th and went to the Superbowl again

I agree but you have to remember, there are mid season adjustments and off season adjustments. It’s obvious which one is better and why. But defenses aren’t going to spend that much time during the season to learn how to beat the dolphins because they have other teams to prepare for.
Also, there are midseason and offseason offensive adjustments which I believe McDaniel, with a mixture of injuries to Tua, had trouble with last year. But his off season adjustments are damn there legendary. The balance of play calling and the new play design makes last year’s team look juvenile imo. I’m saying that to say this, I think the guy from Yale is very detailed and is taking into account how teams will adjust to his adjustments. I actually think he hired analysts for in game and in season adjustments to their play calls and design. I don’t see how a defense can adjust to their presnap motion combined with “run action” fakes where the offensive line is pretending to block for a run, the linebackers are watching both the pre snap motion and then the fake to the running back, only for Tua to pitch it back to the running back, to launch it to the guy that was in motion or to a WR in the middle of the field. Couple that with the possibility that they’re probably RPOs or even PROs, meaning that the play isn’t written in stone if it’s going to be a pass or a run, that Tua is watching the linebackers and safety as the ball is being handed off , and then deciding to make it either a run or pass play. That’s a lot to think about for defenses especially with the speed they have. I also didn’t see the dolphins run a lot of RPOs against the bills, which could only mean that they’re saying some looks for the playoffs.

I don't think people take into consideration just how much it really did hurt the 2013 Broncos to lose their veteran CENTER before that SB. Nevermind the loss of Von Miller too. An offense built the way Denver was built MUST have dominant CENTER play. You could see how much losing their CENTER hurt them clearly on the first play of the game and so forth ALL Seattle really did defensively was play a basic TAMPA 2 with 7 man zones, a 4 man pass rush with constant pressure to the interior of Denvers OLine.

I love Achane took him early second round of my dynasty draft and in the 14th of my money league. With that said he will be fragile. Not just because he is small (which he is very undersized) but also because of how he grew up training. He may have loved football but he was a track kid. Grew up running indoor and outdoor and only stopped running track when it was football season. That abuse on the ligaments and joints on your leg can be massive for people (marquise Goodwin has had a plethora of leg injuries because he also was a track guy) and with how mostert and Jeff Wilson are I am worried the dolphins will loose this run game. Making it much tougher on Tua and that defense. They'll be goood but not as elite as this run game has made them

A few things, they have a very large RB room, which to me was a very cringe worthy sign after they cut the team down to 52 players in the preseason. I saw them use a lot of zone blocking and pre snap reads with RPO “not written in stone” type of plays. All of the above indicated that they were doing the Terrell Davi broncos s thing, a lot of cut backs for RBs. Which made me very nervous and not nervous at the same time, if that’s possible. It’s cringe because McDaniel or Grier seem to know how this type of play can affect the longevity of RBs. And they not only added more rbs but they added rbs that can fit that play style combo of good readers and great speed. I think that’s also why they were going after the colts running back in the offseason with an already stacked rb room. And I’m sorry but I don’t think Achane is the best all purpose back for the dolphins. He’s the most explosive but limited at the goal line, for instance, where if he wasn’t so Tua wouldn’t have had to throw it on that intercepted play. I believe the better rounded running back is Chris Brooks. If you don’t know him look at his pre season tape with the dolphins, and his big run against the broncos. Where Achane is explosive Brooks is really a work of art. The broncos play isn’t an outlier he sees and takes some really beautiful lanes, and does it so smoothly. Sadly the design of the offense will hurt a lot of these guys.

I know they haven't played any real barn burners but they shut down the giants and broncos. The Bills beat them but it was close. If their defense can play at average or above they will be hard to stop. Of course they will need to win the division so that the playoffs go through Miami. If they have to go to Cincy or Buffalo for a game, that cold weather will affect them.

We didnt have waddle in the 70 point blowout and now today no achane yet put up 42.... this Miami team has alot of fast players and great but i think this success is thanks to McDaniels schemes and play calling he draws up the right plays at the right moments probably 80 percent of the time.

So far this team feels similar to the 2013 Broncos and their own 1984 Dolphins squad, so my gut tells me they get to the Superbowl but lose it.
Of course this is very early and my predictions' lifespans are usually measured in minutes, so I apologize to Dolphins fans reading this comment. (Unless they WIN the Superbowl, in which case, you're welcome.)

    • @fortynights1513
      @fortynights1513 7 месяцев назад +1

The 84 Dolphins had a defense that was decent, but not amazing, and much better than most of the Dolphin defenses in Marino’s prime. They were admittedly the worst in the league that year against the run, but seventh by points overall, and a bit above average at getting turnovers too.
The 2013 Broncos had a rather bad defense that had some injuries I believe (and they ranked 22nd overall with ten fewer turnovers).
Both made the Super Bowl largely on offense and lost to a more well rounded team that is probably among the better all time Super Bowl champions.

I think Miami can go far. I know their defense isn’t the best, but they’re still waiting for Jalen Ramsey to play and if he still looks anything like the Jalen Ramsey we know then the team should be fine. I think they can win 13-14 games, possibly beat out the chiefs and bills for the 1 seed and beat them in the playoffs too. But against the niners or eagles in the Super Bowl they might have a harder time.

Historically great offenses don't win the super bowl. It's one of those weird stats, but the greatest seasons offensively peter out either cause they can't sustain it because of injuries or they just happen to run into that one defense that can contain them.

The Dolphins are an incredible team with a number of weapons which when healthy will put up great stats. My only problem with the statistics in the video is how misleading this is. Like I said, the Dolphins are a great team and are likely a shoe in to make the playoffs if not a Superbowl, but the Broncos game pads their stats. Their stats will still be good, but they can't maintain this as they won't be putting up those stats week in week out. Maybe I'm wrong, they'll probably have the greatest season in over a decade, but I just can't believe they'll maintain this.
