  • Here is the basic aikido technique NIKYO applied against some grab and strike attacks. Nikyo is one of the pinning techniques, katame waza, as opposed to the throws, nage waza.
    I mostly show it slowly for clarity, and mainly gotai (from a static starting point). But there is also some jutai (moving as the attack approaches). In most cases, there is little difference between gotai and jutai versions of nikyo, except for the timing.
    Nikyo (二教) is one of the basic techniques in aikido. It simply means “second teaching”. In other budo it is usually called kote mawashi (小手 廻し), “revolving wrist”. It consists of a wrist lock that can be quite convincing, when done correctly. In its basic form it ends with a pinning on the floor - I show it a few times on the video, but far from always.
