Throw the hardware in and set it while you clean the frame, clean hardware and it didn't extend the work time hardly at all. Can you do a more in depth video on how to properly torque the swing arm pivot bar? If you come across the opportunity of course.
    Have really odd tire wear and a side to side shimmy while going through corners.
    I had it apart to replace the brake pads, wheel bearings and rear tire. I checked for side to side play on the swing arm but had zero.
    It also moves freely and smoothly up and down.
    I had a dealership check it out a few years ago and after $140 bucks they said it was the tire. It wasn't.
    I'll be taking it apart to replace the final drive belt in a few months so I'm gonna look into the swing arm being the issue again.
    Thanks for the vids!

      It was a complicated situation, if I remember correctly. I believe the customer who owned the bike at the time of the video had just recently purchased it from a general motorcycle place (non HD dealership) and when he purchased the bike he also purchased an aftermarket extended warranty program. And when he purchased the bike, I believe he was told it had a "new" transmission that they just put in it. I think he jad ridden the bike only a couple of times since purchase. So ya, it was an aftermarket warranty kind of deal. And I didn't know the guy so I was just saying it was gunna be a nice bike now for whoever he his.

    ..hey Brad , just another quick question concerning my repair .. what is the process to repair the countershaft needle bearing located on the primary side of the transmission housing ? .. can this be removed and installed using a hammer and appropriate sized socket ? .. which direction is out for removal ?

    • @HarleyDavidsonWizard
      @HarleyDavidsonWizard  4 года назад +1

      I use the biggest socket that will push the bearing through. I think is a 15/16 or 1in socket. I turn the socket around and stick the extension in from the inside of the socket so when I'm hitting it, the largest surface area of the socket is applying pressure to the countershaft bearing. To remove the bearing I knock the bearing into the trans case and same when installing a new bearing, like im sitting on the left side of the bike (primary side) and drive the bearing into the trans case. I use a hefty mini sledge, probably 10lb. A normal hammer isnt enough. But ya. Pound the old one out and I coat the outside of the new bearing in green loctite #294. And pound in the new bearing. U gotta work quick as the lock tight sets up fast. The reason for the green locktite is, some trans case countershaft bearing bores are not a perfect circles and oil can leak past the bearing. And this is what the motor company told me to do so I do it on all countershaft bores now.

      @@HarleyDavidsonWizard ...is there any concern that the thin wall of the transmission housing will break ..that is my real concern with using socket/hammer .. i havent removed the transmission from the bike and was hoping to find a solution that doesnt involve removing the trans housing out of the frame .. will the socket/hammer work while the transmission housing is still in the frame ?

    • @HarleyDavidsonWizard
      @HarleyDavidsonWizard  4 года назад +1

      I wouldn't be concerned about breaking the trans case. I've done it like this probably 50 times and havent had one break. It is a unsettling about of force the first couple times you do it so dont go thinking little taps will do it. A big single handed mini sledge for sure. And hit it like it owes you money. I've only done it with the transmission case in the bike, I'm assuming its easyest that way to or else you'd have to prop the trans case up against something. Baker Drive train makes a really nice tool to replace the bearing in a "more civilized" manner. It comes in there grudge box transmission kit. I've used it once and it was really nice. I dont know if they sell the bearing tool separately from the grudge box kit.

    • @HarleyDavidsonWizard
      @HarleyDavidsonWizard  4 года назад +2

      In this particular situation we replace the transmission case because it was physically damaged. In a normal transmission overhaul I would leave the transmission case in the motorcycle and replace the main drive gear bearing and the counter shaft bearing. But both of those bearings come preinstalled in a new transmission case. Thanks for the question and the view.

    .. when the transmission 'cartridge' has been installed into the case and prior to mounting the clutch basket ,should there be any in/out play horizontally when the 'splined mainshaft end' is pushed in/out toward the 'trap door' side ? ..should there be any endplay/float ? ..if no freeplay should exist ,what might be the problem ?

    • @HarleyDavidsonWizard
      @HarleyDavidsonWizard  4 года назад +1

      The main shaft (splined shaft) should have bacically no detectable (in and out) end play. The main shaft is retained in the trap door with a roller bearing and roller bearings should have bacically no end play. When the main shaft does have end play it's a damaged trapdoor bearing or a damaged trapdoor door. Also the main shaft will have a little up and down play. But that's normal clearance.

    I watched the first video in this little series, and noticed that some of the gears had the 'cross-cut' at a different angle to the others and of course to the straight cut first gear ones. I believe that the gear cluster was a generation II when surely it should be generation III - I have a 2010 Dyna and that has generation III gears - which has all the angles (except 1st gear) going the same way. Is that correct ?

    • @HarleyDavidsonWizard
      @HarleyDavidsonWizard  4 года назад +1

      To be honest, I'm not sure. I haven't payed specific attention to the generations of the gear sets. Other than getting the updates from the motor company each year on "whats new , on the new models" I haven't thought about them in terms of the generations. I do like that tho, so I'll have to think about it. But yes, after the customer found out that the trans in the vehicle wasn't new and was actually used, he went back to the place that had done the work and they "fessed up" and said they found the "best low millage trans" so its deferentially likely the used trans was from an earlier model. Great job Brad! Hey, I'm kinda new to Harleys and am in need of advice from a real mechanic like you. I'm no Harley mechanic. I'm a retired pipewelder/fitter in the shipbuilding industry (30 yrs) and am mechanically inclined. In this line of work, I've run into just about every kind of mechanical mishap one can imagine... I had a bad noise coming from the primary area on my 07 Road King. I found small metal shaving on the trans drain plug. I went as far as replacing the inner primary trans bearing (pressed in inner primary case) I went back with a Baker sealed bearing and eliminated the race one because I found it pitted and somewhat scarred. I buttoned it all back up, but only to realize I didn't stop the noise. So I'm going back in there and am gonna replace the main gear bearing (provided it needs replacement). So, my question to you is: Is there any advice, or tech tips you can offer me??? Thanks, and keep doing what you are doing. You have a great future ahead of you! The motorcycle world is in dire need of people like you! ...Godspeed.
