Thank you
Yes thank you the video really changed mY leads in a good way I did a lot of shredding but I wasn't really thinking about ending on notes outside the scale it really changed the sound of solo in a good way great concepts I never heard before thanks
You're a legend, Bert.
Haha I love that "let's make sure your in tune. Here's an A chord. Ok let's go"
@@GitarristSulan Mmk
No messing around when Marty teaching
never seen a tune like this.. was waiting for the E.... A.......lolll
@@DC180 It's the normal note for orchestra to tune to, played by the principal oboe for some reason. But an example in pop music: ruclips.net/video/pYhBCPyl_8U/видео.html
I really don't know because i am a beginner. How do you tune your guitar by just listening to an A chord?
5:15 "Okay you're probaly wondering what's going on through my mind, besides probably food or something like that"
I love you Marty
He'd get along with Goku if he was real... Wait doesn't Marty live in Japan? XD
When I saw him few months ago in his masterclass clinic, someone asked him where his inspiration mostly comes from, and he said it could be from food he just ate, places he just visit, random sound he hears on the way to the venue, etc.
Marty is pure American rockstar guitarist living in Japan. Don't mess that up.
Maybe marty was semi high in this video 😂
"The more that you think. the better you are going to play." - Marty Friedman.
It is now a quote.
Feelings... Nothing more than feelings
... the less i think the better i play.
matt fernandez I have thought real hard with the guitar... he’s right. I fuckin love Marty. A cool guy. Just like pretty much all these badass guitarists
@@panama1942 Either way, it's the feel for the music man. Doesn't matter if it's fast or slow.
I gotta be dumb..
such an interesting style.. hes like a shredder guy, but hes not just mindlessly running scales faster and faster, he actually has feeling behind his solos and he has the musical knowledge to back it up
He's self taught too so that's pretty impressive.
Yes, which is why i definitely site him as such a large influence. He has a lot more theoretical musical knowledge than he typically leds on, as well. I've learned so much from him that i still try to practice and implement to this day!
Fredegunde Stratton he's self taught??!! wtf, knowing a guitarist as great as marty friedman is self taught i got more confident now in my guitar playing
He has a great musical ear in his soloing. This is why he has such great musicality. He said it himself, speeding up alternate picking makes everything sound the same which is true. He has excellent sweeping arpeggios and bends and when you put it all together that is his sound.
Hes metal Django Reinhardt
20+ year old video taught me more than the damn teacher I paid
+john wiles That really sucks but you should have watched this first.
Problem with teachers is that most of the times they don't know the shit we want to learn.
Good advice doesn't age.
A good teacher makes sure you understand the information before going to the next thing. That's why videos are very different from actual lessons.
john wiles, I studied classical & Flamenco guitar under Arnold Lessing at college (he taught Robby Krieger, too).
He taught me a lot. So, I appreciate him. But, classical guitar & metal soloing are different. So, I am glad I learned from both.
The best guitarist Megadeth ever had.
No..Chris Poland was easily Friedmans equal.Easily.
Tyler Durden but he didn’t write all the classics
@@tinman8014 Solos on Peace Sells, Rattlehead, Good Mourning Black Friday, Devil's Island and Bad Omen weren't classics ? Lol.
Sainandan Ramakrishnan You might be right- I assumed he was co-author on rust in peace but seems that might not be the case.
@@sainandanramakrishnan4812 anyone can write solos who wrote the songs?
Best vibrato without tremolo, my fav guitarist
You should give a listen to a guy named Stevie Ray Vaughan before saying, "best vibrato without a tremolo". 😉
@rotagbhd Yeah cause nobody's ever heard SRV right?
😂
I still have a VHS tape of this (& the other one that he did).
Prior to a work accident in which I nearly lost my left index finger & had emergency, corrective surgery to repair it, I used to practice the lessons on both VHS tape, DAILY.
I had my guitar strapped on & would just walk around my apartment playing through my Marshall half-stack (via my Nady wireless system).
I am back at it (after years away from guitar).
Fuck yeah brother!
Never give up brother; Tony Iommi is your patron saint. You should be hella proud you’re back on the horse.
This guy is just so good.
Marty proves here that even if you have all the technique in the world without being able to play melodically over chord changes all that technique will be pretty much inconsequential, i find this tutorial way, way more meaningful and useful than most of the other shredder vids, fantastic stuff :)
yeah you're right. There are enough videos on technique out there, so this was really useful. However, it seems best to have most of your techniques down and then learn theory type stuff, because you'll be able to play a lot more examples of each theory you learn. If you start learning theory on day one, you'll only be able to apply one note at a time.
Important video yes i myself fell
@@rustyshackleford4743 yeah, but in my opinion, it doesn't matter how fast or clean you can play or how many notes you can play in one bar if you don't really know what is going on with them. I think both things are important, but learning music theory is learning how music works and discovering exactly what you want to play. Then, the technique will help, but it should not be the first thing when learning imo
it feels like I'm actually taking a lesson with friedman himself
N.A.L Nathan I know right? This guy is a great impersonator.
Marty is a fucking engineer of soloing. His mind is way too brillant.
I have my favourite players. But dam every time i hear this man, he tops the list.
ikr he is insane despite all his tehcnicality he's melodic beyond belief and that's what always brings me back to him
I love Marty's pick hand. So unorthodox, yet so right. I was watching an old Living Color vid and I realized that Vernon Reid has the exact same pick hand technique. Two great guitarists.
Oh wow, I never really made that connection, you're totally right. I picked up guitar back in 1990 and both Vernon and Marty were part of the reason I did. I think Marty gets more heat for the technique as Vernon was known to be super wild and kinda sloppy on his leads seemingly on purpose, while Marty is fluid and controlled.
I recommend this video for anyone, not just metal guitarists. This guy is not only an excellent musician, but he really knows how to explain essentials in a transparent manner as well.
21:40 When the D comes up, I start to get a little bit more adventurous...
hot damn
You are naughty..
Hahahahaha
thru your A? gg
I like to hit the B with my D... But it's not nice to sit on it! 👀
Strange, he doesn't seem to be very big on music theory, but he sure seems to know a lot about it.
Gotta learn the rules to break the rules ig
If you listen his work in Cacophony or the way he uses modes in Megadeth (maybe Lucretia is the best example) you will notice he is not just technique but masive theory knowledge. His melodies are very expresive and methodic
@@maurodarken
Interesting. Thank you.
Its relative. He knows a lot about it.
I love how he plays notes a half step down from the target, which would normally sound horrible, but he does amazing bends up to the target!
Did you live it? Did you learn it? Did you get it down? Rewind the tape until you do!
I just cannot even imagine holding my arm and hand in the position Marty plays with.
+Tommy Armour true..same thing happens with me.this man actually makes music.he is so fluent.
Every so often I'll try it and see if I can benefit from it. Not once have I ever done it for more than five minutes and come away thinking how uncomfortable it is.
When I first saw him playing like that, I assumed that it was a result of him breaking his wrist or something.
you have to be descended from the anunnaki
Personally, I cannot but to hold pick any other way than the "Marty" way. I tried forward angled pick slanting, it just doesn't work for me. It's backward angled or nothing. Just my two cents..
Not only a great player but a great instructor. There's a lot of other speed metal players who have two and 300,000 subscribers, and their lessons are really hard to follow. Marty gives a lot of down to earth, from the heart, intelligent and practical information and advice. In fact, I'm amazed that a man with his talent is taking the time to try to teach this stuff.
Dude, this video was recorded about thirty years ago even further.. He haven't joined megadeth yet..
@@soyenyuu
That's amazing.
@@soyenyuu this is a document from 92. A lot of ideas of this lessons are from "scenes" album and at this time he already joined megadeth.
This video is the reason Kirk Hammett decided to pick up the wah and James Hetfield became a table.
Kirk doesn’t really think the same way Marti does. Marti is very methodical and thinks and carefully plans his way through his solos. Kirk is a lot more basic - a note jammer basically. However, I’d never say Kirk isn’t capable of playing more or less the same things Marti does. I just don’t see him doing it.
Tushar Sharma Solos are really about creativity and being able to translate what you hear into reality. I’m not trying to knock Kirk when I say this, but I’m not a massive fan of his playing, particularly the over use of the wah which gets a bit tiring after a while. Marty’s solos are works of art by comparison.
@@donharrold1375 you clearly have not watched that video where James Hetfield is trying desperately to teach Hammett how to get one little riff right and gets frustrated because it is just not working. There is absolutely no way Hammett would be able to play like Friedman. To me it is not a Metallica vs Megadeth thing it is just that Hammett is more of a guitarist than he is a musician and he is not an original guitarist with that I would say. Mustaine and Friedman regularly trust the top 10 of "all time heavy metal" guitarists, interestingly Hetfield is far behind in the top 50 usually but still way ahead of Hammett who simply does not seem to be regarded as either great guitarist or musician. Hammett's solos for me are cringe worthy, they have a lot of cosmetics in them and musically... they just never sound right to me, they never surprise me. With Friedman the solo takes directions I don't expect but it is still intensely melodic so it never feel awkward. Friedman has developed his own style. Hammett may have developed his own tone but he does not have a style of his own. That's what separates a descent guitarist from a great musician. And technically speaking, there is no contest either. Could Hammett play one of Friedman's solo? Yes, after weeks of practice certainly without the nuances. Could he come up with solos as original, heavy and melodic? Absolutely no way and there is a trail of uninspired and uninspiring Metallica albums to prove it. I rarely enjoy one of James Hetfield riffs these days because it is deja vu most of the time, but the rare time I do, the solos just ruin it all plain and simple. It is not just the wah which is only one of the cosmetics, it is just that KH solos are not tight, they are not melodic, they don't really know where they are going, and they always feel like they are not part of the actual song. The timing is off at times and the solos always end the same way. They are an annoying disruption. In fact I suspect KH is at his best when playing something less metal and more groovy. When he plays slow Hammett sounds better because when he plays slow he has to be more careful of his basic technics like bending. Load was probably the style of slow groovy soloing that fit him the most but still when you see Hetfield or even Trujillo give Hammett a guitar lesson he just cannot replicate... ok he is better than the average guitarist maybe but next to a pro guitarist like Friedman, I just think there is no comparison possible. I don't know how many lessons KH took with the Satch but it does not seem to have stuck with him. Friedman still surprises me and he ventures in progression styles that are not very common. In Rust In Peace, you could hear arabic progressions or whatever it is called and it fit the melody and song so well. The very best solos of KH were in the first Garage Days and for a good reason: he has not wrote them.
BonuxCouleur I'm wondering if you play? The Hammett - Hetfield exchange isn't that unusual when people are learning new material? All songs need to be learned and rehearsed. No matter how capable a guitarist is, it takes time to get things right. Rhythm parts can take a lot more effort particularly if they are syncopated and involve a lot of idiosyncratic elements. Most competent guitarists who were prepared to practise hard, including Kirk, could make a fair representation of one of Marti’s solos. That's not really the point though. Marti’s real talent is coming up with great solos in the first place.
@@donharrold1375 Yeah it was not an exchange, it was Hetfield getting annoyed at Hammett's inability to reproduce a riff when even Trujillo got it spot on just by ear. Metallica is THE band with the longest periods of inaction between albums and KH is still talking about "one day I will make a solo album and it will have nothing to do with heavy metal". Don't hold your breathe on that one, I don't think KH has the right motivations for that. He has been in Metallica's full resting mode for too long. If you have to wait 8 years between album, you expect a masterpiece, not a reuse of all the bits and pieces they have rejected from the previous albums. That's the problem with KH, Hetfield has been the freight train carrying all the load and to a point where he ran out of ideas, but the other guys never really put their stride. Friedman hit the mark spot on in his very first album with Megadeth where his arabic scale et al were put to good use. Mustaine has been better at picking band members than Hetfield and Ullrich. It is not that KH is a bad guitarist, he is not but he was far from the greatest and he never seem to come up with fresh material. So I am taking he either does not have the work ethic or he has not been into heavy metal for a long time and is just happy to surf on the financial success that is Metallica. I think if he had some new interesting materials, we would have heard it by now, so I don't buy there will ever be a solo album from KH for that matter.
Who ever disliked this vid has some serious issues. Marty is a Master and an original one at that
Kirk Helmet,... for a start
The Marty, Nick Menza, Dave, & Junior lineup was & is the best lineup not only in Megadeth, but in metal.
R.I.P. Nick.
Marty is one of the rare players who is as good of a teacher as he is a player. This video is a gift.
Its so cool to hear tasty blues grooves coming from Marty with the magnicent Jackson Kelly.
All I want is Chris Poland to do a video like this! I just want to know what the hell is he doing!!
Freebird chris has nothing on marty! U should study kurt hammet hes more your level
I agree. What I like about Friedman & Poland is how they utilize bends.
Wade Sharp, it’s Kirk, not “Kurt.”
Also, it appears you learned to play via the Troy Stetina method.
😂
Generic ‘80s, hair-metal style.
🤣
Guitarists like you are a dine a dozen; boring, with no real creativity.
But, you want to be arrogant toward this guy& others.
GTFO out of here with, Mr. “legend in your own mind.”
Marty followed my Instagram account, I'm honestly honored as hell. He's been one of my idols for awhile.
his bends and phrasing man. cant be replicated. so many people jusr run thru scales. hes pure musical
This is hands down one of the best lessons EVER!
one of the best music lessons ever, very underrated player. thx u marty!
Marty has never, ever been underrated.he is renowned to be incredible melodic, unique and out of the box thinking by anyone who plays guitar
and has appreciation for brilliance and can understand what he is actually talking about.he is a very highly rated guitar player,NEVER UNDERRATED.
on the same token, marty has an issue/misconception were he says dont learn modes . dont believe him,he knows modes but MAYBE he doesn't know the names of them.(i find it highly unlikely though)for example, and its funny as hell,
he plays a phyrgian scale then says he invented it which is ridiculous as its a 2000 year old scale pattern and he just doesn't know the name of it.
definitely learn modes then you will know what actually fits with other notes, scales chord patterns etc. and you'll allow yourself more freedom to move from different sounds, scales progressions etc.
Most enjoyable hour I've spent in a long time.
The best part of this whole thing is his hair.
Chris C. No
He should have taken CC's spot after Flesh & Blood
Head or chest??
The last solo which starts at 57:10 is simply one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard.
he was at his best during this time
Then you should listen to Cacophony and what he did with Jason Becker!
Orlando Miranda That solo sound a lot like Black cat by Cacophany
I know this was a few years ago, but that’s Angel from his Scenes album. A great song to play and listen to.
Black Cat's improvisation.
The melody from15:37 and beyond is a feeling that cannot be described in words 😇
No one has the touch as Mr Marty Friedman does .
I mean is like he has the touch to put out his feeling in that instrument.
Confirmed: Marty Friedman thinks about food while he is soloing
I've watched this more than 10 times at this point and learned something new every single time
0:27 - 0:29
Not even half a minute has passed
but that change up so spicy
Some people couldn't play anything original if a gun was put to their head. Mimicking is one thing, but playing something original is entirely different. This might be the best presentation I have ever seen/heard in my life--and I've watched a hell of a lot of presentations.
What an honest, candid and heartfelt presentation. These are real pearls of wisdom. I've only been playing 7 months but I've taught myself all 5 Pentatonic and all 7 diatonic shapes, up and down, backwards and 4 words on the fretboard. I just played a jam tracks right now. But I work hard to expand and contract and blend all the shapes so that it doesn't sound like I'm just playing shapes.
I just finished learning Marty's the Killing road solo, you can really hear how he digs into these arpeggios as he goes from one lick to the next just beautifully nitting them all together, the guy is just so awesome
17:58 If you do a straight triplet run like **A*
I'm a firm believer that CONTROL is really an illusion (deep down). You can try to control things (or say you're going to control things) but nobody knows what's going to happen from one day to the next (maybe even 1 hour or 1 minute to the next). Choosing notes that go with the chords is a great tip. I would say it gives you "direction," not control. But this guy is a virtuoso and I've only been playing for 7 months. What the fuck do I know?
I honestly never get tired of hearing him play
Watching his face in this video, I understand why Dave Mustaine hate Marty in the first place. Glad he changed his mind after seeing his one of a kind guitar playing style which shape Megadeth music. And that is why Marty Friedman is my top 5 melodic guitarist.

When ever I'm in a pissy mood I like to come to this video and it calms me down. Thanks marty
4 minutes in and I’m already hearing how he was able to come up with those insane solos on Rust.
How and why have I avoided this video for so long? I might have watched it years ago but didn't understand anything he was saying cause I knew jack all for guitar theory. Now I feel like I have to go back and retrack every solo I have ever played.
Around 52:00 when Marty starts playing the blues, he's the in-person embodiment of Skisgaar from that one blues episode of Metalocalypse, "It's physically unpossible to play slow" LOL
Who said shredders don't know about playing melodically or with feeling? Marty does it so much better than most of those "great" blues-based guitarists do, in my opinion...
He offers one hell of a lot of information in this hour lesson. He's giving me enough in this one hour to keep me busy for months if not years. Everyone's goal is different. I want to be able to get up there during open mic and play something that really sounds amazing on electric guitar. I love distortion, but I haven't started with the chords yet. Just knowing the five Pentatonic and seven Diatonic shapes, I could spend days (or weeks or months) just varying those. I guess I've been avoiding chords. I've got to put the pedal to the metal - - no pun intended.

I was talking to an instructor ar Guitar Center. He was telling me to keep my thumb behind the neck between the 3rd and 4th fingers. It feels So unnatural to me.
I kind of associate playing guitar with martial arts. Bruce Lee respected tradition but he was not a slave to it. He developed his own style. He didn't necessarily follow any models or formulas. I'm not sure about Marty but a lot of these guys have really long fingers. Hendricks, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pete Townshend. Those fretboards look like toys with guys who have big hands. Still, look at Prince. I'm not his biggest fan but he was not a tall man so his hands couldn't have been that big. But he could play.
What a great teacher! I mean we all know he is a master guitarist but love his explanations so clear and easy to comprehend.

Marty is forever connected to my teen H.S. years... late 80s early 90s... the best time of virtuoso guitarists🙂
I bought this tape when it first came out and hated it. Back then, I was used to instructional videos having mostly signature licks. Learning those licks were great for my "bag of tricks" and definitely inspired me to play...but didn't do much for my my understanding of how music really works. Watching this again, I see why it's superior to most vids.
The most unusual popular guitarist whose guitar picking style is very unique
This lesson can be useful to guitar players at pretty much any level of playing. Very good tips and insight.

Legend. I always compare Friedman to Chopin in the sense that he writes the craziest unconventional melodies and does so intentionally to avoiding being predictable. Chopin’s music is exactly the same way as he will use the wildest passing tones, appogituras or other non harmonic chromaticism and somehow it always sounds smooth af. Just like Friedman.

I was like "yes sir." Marty doesn't mess around giving these lessons. I guess working years for Dave will do that to you. :)
Marty is one of the few shredders I know of who doesn't have a locking whammy bar system on his guitar. It's probably a good thing, because I'm sure the temptation to play dive bomb harmonic squeals out the wazoo would be there. It forces him to get improvise in other ways, which is good. Guitarists in his genre tend to abuse the whammy bar and make their playing sound very stale.

true
+pavlo busko You can say that again!
+6672rock No the dive bombs are NOT tempting, what gets annoying fast is the over use of the Pinch Harmonic no floyd rose required for those.

Marty is in the man.😃🤠 is in the Top 15 world guitarists🎸
I love this style of playing, once you get a feel for it, you can jam for hours on the same chord progression as long as you just let your fingers dance.
I love Jackson’s. The neck always feels amazing. Though I prefer thicker necks for rhythm, the thins necks are way better for shredding.

+EvanesEmperor I feel you. Scenes and Introduction are lessons about music.
Over the years I've come back to this video several times and always learned something new, or understood something differently than I had previously took it. Thanks Marty. You're a genius!
Guys let us all agree he kicks ass in intro and outro his improvisations are amazing!!!!!
The talent of this man Is beyond belief...
While I did start out with the scales, I had to start somewhere. But I work very hard not to let it limit me or be stuck inside some box. It was just a starting. Now I do everything I can to play outside the box. But it's a little discouraging when you see guys who started at 10 or 12 years old. But that's no excuse. I look for inspiration everywhere. Marty inspires me to try harder and to do more. To not become complacent.

This is such a good lesson for more advanced players who get what he is saying even if you are really good this is still a great lesson really gave me some new concepts and ideas about guitar like using a relative scale on the way up after going down on a major really sounds good and has opened my lead playing massive amazing just really grasping one are 2 different techniques and ideas can make you so much better this lesson is great because there is a lot of information in it really great information I love Marty because he is truly interested in making people better on guitar not like malstien who has a crap instructional video that is just him showing off his video gives me the impression that he doesn't want people to learn unlike Marty who seems to give true guitar hero knowledge seriously a good video anyone who wants to get better should master one are 2 techniques at least from this video
I did the same, raising with the major and falling with the minor has a really colorful sound to it. He explained it so well that even I got it! Hell of a job Marty did on this old video, and it's 2022 now, still relative
@@deshondetoro1638 really is great this older knowledge isn't used much anymore especially in my genre metal everyone is just doing fast sweep picking without much thought of unique sound I think anyone would improve if they gave a few of these ideas a try
Every once in a while i visit this video when im frustrated with my progress. Helps!
57:00 the chord progression is from Black Cat - Cacophony
I fcuken love Marty Friedman. No BS all class!
For anyone wondering where the solo from 15:00 is from I just figured out that it is "angel" from the "scenes" album
