Day 1: Another great hidden jem often looked over is the low tier T-80. It is the fastest firing tank in the game that isn’t an auto cannon or has an autoloader. And it has one of the best gun depressions a Russian tank can have at a whopping -8° of maximum gun depression. It’s turret traverse is abysmal and it’s armor is something to be desired, but the reload is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it. (Great content as always! Your videos are always a joy to watch!)
Oh and the suspension actively fights against you when you are moving and trying to stop. Like it invented "anti-stab." But as a low tier sniper, esp. if you angle it with the engine out, yeah.

Years ago, I saw a SVT-40 in the Greenville, SC Cabella's "gun room". I considered buying it but it was expensive (also 54R ammo was starting to get expensive). It did look like the big brother to an sks. If you wanted a semi-auto 7.62x54R I would stick with the upsized AK style rifles (dragunov clones etc.). The SVT-40 is more of a collectors gun (I have read that they shoot well but are hard to disassemble).

@@MartianLivesMatter They're for similar purposes (and look similar) but nah the actual mechanics of the rifles are very different. A PSL is essentially a scaled up AKM while the SVD is its own thing and is closer to the SVT-40 than AK
Phly I have an SVT-40! It truly is fantastic. An addendum to your mention of the mosins recoil, the SVT almost has negative recoil because the muzzle-break on it is extremely effective. But you still very much feel the power
Since you mentioned giving the T-26 more credit, consider playing the T-26E. The soviet one from the market, with applique armor. And don't forget to angle.
as a owner of SVT-40 i can tell you that ITS BEAST but the gun can be tricky sometimes: + fire rate + semiautomatic + reload by magazine or clips from above + mf lookin good + precise shooting + 2 versions: with or w/o scope mount + kicks hard - overheats quite quickly - very complicated and sturdy disassembly (pain #1) - cleaning is hell --> most places hard to reach (pain #2) - impossible to clean the bore completely - ww2 gun so very keen to corrosion if not treated properly
My grandfather owned several WW2 guns, one of which being an original SVT-40 with one rifle grenade (it was a dud but still looked cool). Sadly I have no idea where it went as some of his sons took the gun safe when he passed and I'm in contact with none of them.
SVT is on cool rifle. One of the better from WWII. I just wonder if the magazines wont be a problem. Back then you really had only stripper clips, so if you get one make sure to keep that mag in a good shape.
For the SKS, you can buy training ammunition. It's all plastic and cheap. Great for plinking cans or pumpkins. OH I ALMOST FORGOT THERES A SODA CAN LAUNCHER FOR IT!!!!!!!! @PhlyDaily p.s. do not put buttstock on leg when launching. Could give you dead leg.
I do reenacting with the SVT inspired German G43. Gotta reduce the gas pressure on the old rifle so sometimes it doesn't like to cycle correctly, but it is fun dumping a mag.

Just so you know phly, for future reference, the sks fires a 7.62x39 (rimless) cartridge not the 7.62x54R (R for Rimmed) cartridge. The x39 is slightly smaller than the x54R and is used in AKs as well as sks’s. Whereas the 54R is used in higher pressure firearms like the mosin nagant, or the DP28 machine gun.

Back in this day putting the landing gear down was the first thing on the check list because it took ages, you will probably need to take a break halfway through, and if the gear arent down you arent landing anyways so might as well get it out of the way.
I dont have a huge amount of experience with small arms, but the only thing ive ever fired that kicked harder then my Mosin Nagant was a single shot breach loading shotgun from 1911. That felt like a horse kicking you in the shoulder.

I've seen them go for less than 1200 bucks sometimes, but SVD is also a nice rifle if you can find one of those for cheaper
As I recently acquired a 1940 production SVT-40 I must say it’s an awesome pick for a gun to own, very fun to shoot and cool weapon, ammo is readily available, and not overly pricey. The gas system is nice as it helps absorb some recoil along with the muzzle brake that shoots flames. Wayyyy better than the SKS in my opinion (plus everyone seems to have an SKS so takes some of the cool factor away)
SVT-40s are quite rare. The import of them was banned by Clinton in the 90s so whatever was in the country as of then is all there is now. Highly recommend though. Shot one once and it was a dream.

Wait, when did Phly talk about an SKS? I freakin love that gun. We have a Chinese Type 56 which is weirdly a bit better than the Russian one. We think it's from the 50s and may have even been Vietnam surplus. Still pounds nails, even with the crappy antique red dot my grandpa slapped on it ages ago.
svt-40's are super cool, it's too bad the rifles and their magazines are so damn expensive, hopefully someone will make a repro someday I wish there were more self-loading 7.62x54r rifles that weren't a long-stroke piston system.
I've owned an SVT-40 its decent but would jam when fired fast...you pretty much got to open the gas port as much as possible to get good cycling of rounds...now a SVD Dragunov wont have this issue but it cost 3x as much for the full kit...as far as modding an SKS just go for it as pretty much everything it bolt on/replacement I.E. stock, mag, hell even a polish is easy just to clean up burrs...hope this helps

Gonna give you a neat fact. The SKS is actually just a scaled down PTRS-41 anti tank rifle, chambered in 7.62x39.

I wouldn't get a psl they have severe accuracy issues with repeated fire and have issues with over gas tubes

SVT-40s can be really picky / unreliable if parts are slightly worn and parts availability is bad compared to an SKS.

Phly look into a PSL-54C. Not as affordable as it used to be, but probably more attainable than an SVT40 and gives Dragunov vibes.
