What is the Luckiest NASCAR Win?

- When you think about it, winning a NASCAR race is pretty hard. A driver has to beat roughly 40 other racers on track, not to mention the physical and mental strength it requires. Winning a NASCAR race puts you in elite company, as only 204 people have ever won at NASCAR’s top level. But as many of you know, luck often plays a huge factor in who wins a race. Factors like fuel strategy, pit road issues, wrecks, poorly timed cautions, and falling off late can all mess things up for the race’s dominant car. In fact, between 2010 and 2020, the driver who led the most laps only won 38% of the time.
This fact led me to seek out what was the most lucky win in NASCAR’s history. There have been tons of “lucky wins” in NASCAR, so I’m not going to be able to get to all of them. But I want to look at many of these finishes and determine what truly is the luckiest win in the history of NASCAR.

The luckiest win is when I gained 9 positions off the final corner in an online NASCAR Heat 5 race at Bristol
12 of us ran out of gas on the last lap in an online race at talladega once, I just happened to run out last due to actually paying attention and trying to save some fuel. Crossed the line at 30mph for the win lmao
@@vermonstersinc5567😂lol
most talented heat 5 lobby
You never passed me tho
I once won a race where I was over 50 mph slower than everyone else because literally every other car had wrecked by lap 186. I then circled the track on my own for 314 laps.
The craziest thing about the last one is David Green would go on to win the championship that year and this was his only win of the season
Oh yes, young phenom David Green with gray hair lol. It’s crazy even then. Older guys were still winning a lot more than the younger guys.
@@DukeTheRebel Green was only 36 at the time.
Surprised Chase Elliott's 2022 Pocono "win" never got mentioned here
Ya I’m pretty sure he didn’t even lead a lap
@@mitchcase7829he didnt
Hey as long as drivers cross the line in P1 at the finish and pass post-race inspection, winning is winning
Jeff Gordon won a race at Pocono where all four drivers in front of him wrecked simultaneously, during the caution for that very wreck it started raining and the raced was called short. That had to be his luckiest win.
Derrike Cope in the 1990 Daytona 500 is the luckiest win. No question about it. Dale had that race in the bag before that tire gave out.
Yes, Copes win was pretty lucky, but at the same time his car was a monster that day. Rode around the front like he owned it.
Eric Jones winning the clash is definitely up there for lucky wins
Is it really a win though since it wasn’t points paying
justin haleys nascar career is full of lucky wins, his truck series win at canadian tire motorsports park, the coke zero 400 win, his two xfinity wins at daytona
Brett Bodine's win wasn't lucky. He was leading the race. NASCAR had him scored as the leader of the race. He had one of the best cars on the track. The conspiracy was debunked and has only been kept alive by Earnhardt and Waltrip fans who probably thought Toyota coming into NASCAR was a betrayal.
Oh yeah, I absolutely believe Brett Bodine didn’t luck his way into that win. He pulled off some great pit strategy with Larry Mac on the box And cycled out to the lead. Brock beard and NASCARman history did a great deep dive into that race.
Kyle Busch Pocono 2021 has to be an honorable mention. Last on lead lap, melted clutch, stuck in 4th gear, direct drive.
Burton at Darlington 1999 winning in the rain with a car that was literally junked is the one that comes to mind for me.
Fraternity Order of Eagles cars always finds the absolute weirdest ways to win at Daytona 😂
Michael Waltrip's 2004 Busch series win at Nashville deserves an honorable mention.
For me, the luckiest win is either Stenhouse's Daytona 500 win, or the 2018 Charlotte Roval, when MTJ and Jimmie Johnson wrecked each other, handing Blaney the win.
man that was heartbreaking for jimmie, maybe that was his 2nd nudge into further collapse 😔
@@cykablyatman6242 heartbreaking for JIMMIE? Truex had a hotrod that day and Jimmie's impulsivity and not being able to handle the fact that he was going to finish second genuinely stole it from Truex. To top it all off, Jimmie didn't make it into the next round because of that. Second place guaranteed him a spot in the next round.
@@mikeypainter11 in the moment it made so little sense that a driver who gained so much in his career by making level headed, points smart moves would throw away an obvious next round for a dive bomb. In hindsight that was his last genuine shot at a win. All in though im most salty at how flagrant Jeffrey stopping on the front stretch for Larson was.
@@mikeypainter11as a truex fan this is infuriating and to know that jimmie was safe if he didnt do that makes it even worse
Honestly I’m surprised you didn’t mention Chase Elliott’s win at Pocono in 2022. Elliott originally finished 3rd but after post race inspection, original winner Denny Hamlin and Second place Kyle Busch were found to have some sort of clear tape on their grill. Elliott was handed the win with 0 laps led by
Need to add: Chris Buescher at Pocono 2016 and Jody Ridley at Dover 1981 (7 laps down!).
I for sure thought Chris Buescher would have gotten an honorable mention.
Zane Smith at Nashville yesterday
Oh wait...
Oh💀
Michael McDowell winning the 2021 Daytona 500.
McDowell had the whole world in front of him, which caused a big wreck that took out a few finishers & allowed him to advance.
Bobby LaBonte winning the 2003 Ford 400.
Bill Elliott ran outta gas in the final corner, & LaBonte claimed a last-minute victory, which would prove to be his last Cup Series win.
Geoff Bodine winning the 1986 Daytona 500.
Dale Earnhardt cut a tire (iirc ?) & had to go to pit row which allowed Geoff Bodine to cross the finish line & cruise towards a win.
The trophy doesn't care who, how many, or how you beat them...
richard petty 1979 daytona 500 win was lucky imo
Fred Lorenzen winning at Bristol in '64 after Richard Petty led 442 laps has to be up there. Petty broke a rear end gear on the last lap.
I've actually done the same thing Mark did. In Papyrus's NASCAR 1, I usually hit "A" to accelerate time after the checkered flag waved, rather than wait for everyone to pit. But there was one time when I was really tired that I hit "A" when the white flag waved! Unfortunately I can't recall who benefited from my goof.
Why is your voice so relaxing, holy heck.
Chase Elliot’s 2022 Pocono win I think is the luckiest due to the top 2 being dq
The 1981 Gabriel 400 was a lucky win for Bobby Allison all because Kyle Petty blew his engine with a handful of laps to go. All the leaders spun in the oil and Allison went from 7th to 1st to the caution flag. Darrell waltrip stayed out on track under caution and shredded debris everywhere, so nascar ran out of laps to get the race restarted.
Michael Waltrip at Pocono when 5 drivers wreaked in front of him
I was going to say when Michael waltrip was passing for fifth at the same time the top four all wrecked each other, but when the whole top ten does it and you go from 11th to first that beats that.
Jeff Gordon’s 2012 Pocono win and Kyle Busch’s 2021 Pocono win are up there.
i feel like the luckiest win in 2024 was reddicks win, dude was in like 8th then the big one he got to first without damage
There was that race at Bristol where Mark Martin pulled off the track a lap early while leading. Don't remember who won, but he wasn't going to catch Mark.
Did Am Racing fire Hailie Deegan? Joey Lagano will be driving Hailie's #15 Xfinity car this weekend.....
And he got an 8th place finish, to add insult to injury for Hailie
I would add stenhouse's win at Iowa in 2011 where he blew a motor while leading on the last lap and still won cause Carl Edwards spun into him and pushed him across the line first
The Justin Haley one sparked a new rule too. Now, if rain happens to delay the race after pitstops or incident, they rule it by positions when the caution flew. I cant remember when, but i think Chase Briscoe was sitting with a damaged car when rain came, but because he was the leader when the caution flew, he was scored the leader incase they had to call the race.
I might be wrong because i cant find anything about it. But also it hasnt ever been a talking point to have enough data other finding when they exactly changed the rule.
Austin Dillon on the 500. He was maybe the 23rd best car on that day. The problem is that the top 20 or so wrecked then he wrecked Almirola for the win. All his wins are luck or a good strategy call by his crew chief. Dude has never driven to victory.
I'm surprised Dillon's Daytona win wasn't #1. The seas quite literally parted for Dillon, and then his teammate happened to be behind him to hold off the back markers. I don't think it can get luckier than that unless the other 9 or so cars remaining wrecked too, but I think that Daytona win is like one of those records that will never be broken as far as luckiest win
The luckiest IMO is Dillion winning that dega or daytona race from 16th when everyone ran into a micro shower
Setting super speedway aside, if we had to pick a Cup race for luckiest win. I think Kyle Petty winning the Miller High Life 400 in 86 at Richmond has that.
4 laps to go, running like 5th. Earnhardt and Waltrip battle out front. In a battle that is obviously going to end in someone turned. Then in a feat of camera work that would make modern fox coverage blush, they miss the hook that catches the top 4 cars and others several seconds back all in a giant wreck.
Kyle then slows down, gets to the caution flag first, and the race never goes back to green.
astounding how many times carl edwards didnt win a plate race because of dumb luck
What about the other way? I remember in an Indy car race, maybe even the 500, someone tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, I forget but was an eventual cup driver just getting started, and they had a five lap lead and decided to pit for gas with 10 to go just to be safe, and they never came out of the pits. That winner was probably lucky too, now that I think of it.
James Buescher making his way through the last lap wreck to win definitely counts as a lucky win.
Top3 luckiest wins, in kronological order because I really can’t decide out of them.Mark Martin’s choke of a lifetime at Bristol.2013 James buscher pressing self destruct on the top10.Justin Hayley getting basically getting a little bit of both of them, which now I think about it may have the slight edge over the rest.
Why did "lucky win" make me think of Austin Dillon?
Trevo Bane had a rocket ship and lead a bunch of labs he didn’t luck up in that win he put his self in a position to win with a fast fast car
i already knw bro is gonna put there austin dillon
*_Ive won a race upside down before…_*
Cindric was in contention to win that Dayrona race but Dillon about wrecked him
2022 Pocono. Elliott won because of a couple pieces of tape.
Any Daytona race Earnhardt lost with 10 or less to go is the luckiest win anyone can get.
Justin Haley Cup Daytona 2019 and it's not even close!
204 winners in cup or at the top 3??
Cup only. You can probably add another 200ish from the other two.
Dales tire goin down was no fluke. Anything bad that happened to him ppl call it a fluke cuz he was the golden boy of NASCAR. He did it to himself
Dillon's 2022 win was NOT a fluke. The undeserving hate is ridiculous
hi
Michael Waltrip's 2004 Nashville "win".
When Jeremy Mayfield robbed da bank
All of Austin dillon wins have been luck
#84 David Gilliland
At Kentucky Motor Speedway
Whose Dell?
Better be bubbas one and only win
1?
Bubba has way more than 1 win.He has 2 cup wins including a Kansas win where he was one of the fastest cars the whole race and he’s got more truck wins than his teammate and his car owner combined
I would consider Joey Logano The Luckiest Driver in NASCAR History
for sure, he's in the conversation. To have two titles because of the current playoff format where he wouldn't be close to a title in the Latford system says a lot.
