I also wanted to add but totally forgot, this will be built in South Carolina and should be able to spec a nice one for under $80k (for tax credit purposes 👌)
Also, a huge thanks to Tyler at Volvo for helping us bend the rules to sit inside of this display unit while the other vehicle was being slammed with so many people.

While I do agree it is a competitively priced product as compared to competitors (especially Audi and Tesla), the EX90 seems to fall slightly short to the BMW iX. Range seems to be quite a bit less, but we will have to wait for real world tests of course. In terms of interior, I do think the Volvo falls short of the BMW’s. Most notably, the performance figure is quite a bit less, with the performance version of the EX90 having over 100 less HP than the BMW, and driving dynamics are likely not as good. While I definitely agree the Volvo is more appealing to the eyes, I do not think it is really a better product than the BMW (unless you’re looking for a 3rd row). Surprisingly, the BMW is wider and taller than the EX90 as well. Overall, amazing product from Volvo for sure, but BMW’s offering is extremely competitive with this as well. Kyle called the iX “the best electric SUV on sale” a few weeks ago, and it’s easy to see why.

I love Volvo as well, the only thing holding me back is the Google OS in it. Certainly it can most likely run Apple Carplay and/or Android Auto into it, however I really prefer car manufacturer OS systems like Tesla or some others do. We all know that Google and some other firms stop updates after a certain time and only focus on newer models. So basically the ‘base’ OS should not be Google, nor Apple or Amazon’s. And then I have not started on the Privacy aspect yet. However, it is definitly a beauty. 🙂

I think that Apple could produce an excellent OS for cars... Their CarPlay basically sucks, but then it's just a band-aid for crappy infotainment systems out there now... Let Apple design the instrument and main computer screens, but mandate that climate and audio controls be placed back into physical buttons/dials -- and you'll get an awesome system.

The bigger issue is that BEV automakers absolutely *have* to start focusing huge attention on the public-charging infrastructure! They must help build out EA, Chargepoint, etc., but also push for daily maintenance/oversight of them, preferably by adding covered charging stations and full-time attendants with food (like the "food marts" at most gas stations today). If you get public-charging stations maintained and attractive, the range issues become much less in importance (and tech improvements will address that anyway with time, as well as charging speeds, whereas the actual public charging stations need to be in place NOW, not later).

One trend I’m noticing (probably for fuel efficiency) is carmakers going back to flappy lift-up door handles, rather than the hoop style ones you pull that seem to be the standard the last twenty or so years.

I heard that the new Volvo EX90 is going to have a self driving system called Ride Pilot and the new Ride Pilot system will basically allow you to take your hands off the wheel and your eyes off the road and Volvo’s Ride Pilot system is basically Pilot Assist 3 and i can’t wait to see you make a video of the Ride Pilot

I've never seen a competent "leather free" replacement when you consider wear and sustainability. Some people consider leather uncomfortable, but it is my favorite. There are always tradeoffs, and frankly the unavailability of leather is a big "con" when I consider Volvo.

I had a pre-order on the XC40 Recharge, but I ended up cancelling after taking a test drive because I felt it had less storage than my Tesla Model 3 (2018), and we were looking into it to replace our KIA Sedona (2015). This EX90 has the 7 seats we would like, and looks like it is designed for enough storage with seats folder to haul a fridge if we had to.
That makes this very viable for our consideration. I can see in your pinned comment that this will be made in US and possible to configure for under $80k to get full $7.5k FTC. When will it be available for deliveries in TX?

If you have watched the ENTIRE Volvo EX90 launch video, at the very end you will see that they have 2 vehicles, one slightly smaller than the other. EX60 I think! In that case, I will happily drive my beautiful 2017 V90 CC until the bugs are worked out on this and/or they officially offer the EX60. I love the size of my V90 CC wagon and am reticent to go back to an SUV, but the times are changing.....Now, if Volvo offered a plug in hybrid CC, I would be down with that.

I'm a Polestar fanboy but I think I like the EX90 better than the Polestar 3 on appearances. The front styling and lights is breathtaking, and I love the interior even though I'd personally probably never use the 3rd row in my life.

    • @cbatiau2528

interesting, because I think that the Polestar 3 has the best-looking BEV exterior on the planet, except for the Taycan perhaps... And I find the EX90 to be among the ugliest (because you can't make a huge SUV/minivan behemoth with three rows of seats look good)...

One of my favorite parts of my XC60 is the grill and front end it looks so good. We'll see when these go into production though I think its growing on me.

I tend to assume any real V2G/V2H is based on DC, just because that lets you output more power (use CCS to hook up an external inverter to your giant battery: profit. External inverter then gets to be huge if needed)

Think that with stuff like autonomous systems and such you either add everything or nothing.
So stuff like lidar/radar is essential and it is not enough with just cameras.
Especially when you consider all kinds of lighting/weather situations.

You will see more models from Volvo in the coming months/years. Based on smaller platforms, with less functions but also a more affordable price. The focus on CES is the Google interaction of the car, which is most likely the reason why you did not get the full chance to interact with the vehicle fully, cause I can tell you most of the things you spoke about which you did not get to see, is functional in the very car you reviewed. You can check the reveal here on youtube to check more.

Would seriously consider the EX 90 or R1S if they could have a rated range of at least 400 miles due to the sub par EA charging vs Superchargers as well as don’t want to be stopping every 2~3 hrs to charge on road trips (our model y lr awd barely got 180 miles after charging to full 312 miles rated range at 100% with our winter tires, some rain, and ~20 degree f weather on a recent road trip.).
