This just proves that you don’t need a high end lens to make great, creative photo’s. Really love what you did with that quirky little lens, Rob.
Thanks, Plato. I try.
best , most comprehensive evaluation of this lens I have seen.
The velvia edit is a key bit of info.
thanks Rob.
Thanks!
Thanks for posting this one
You're welcome.
I bought the MFT version last week and so far I agree with all. your assessments. I'd emphasize the tendency to flare, even on innocent-appearing scenes that would not faze other lenses, which contributes to the lack of contrast. And I do wish, even though it is a body-cap lens, that it had a lens cap. There aren't even filter threads to which I could attach one. I also found that with the E-M1-Mk2 the punch-in manual-focusing aid gives better results faster than focus peaking.
Yes, the flaring starts anytime the sun is in front of you, whether it's in the frame or not. Filter ring would have been nice. I forgot to mention that. The punch in to focus is how I did all the shots. Peaking is pretty much useless with the low contrast combined with a deep depth of field.
In the absence of a hood to reduce flare, just use your hand to block off the direct light 😅
@@steveteoh58 This lens flares so much that I actually would have to block off the direct light -- and thus get a picture of my hand.
This lens looks like a blast to use. It seems ideal for creative BW or retro film sim photos.
It's a fun lens to have.
Dear Rob, Great review ! Perhaps not the best lens someone can buy for their camera, but mounted on an Olympus, and more specifically an Olympus E-P series camera, your camera turns into a tiny and smart compact camera with interchangeable lenses. And at the same time it makes it so inconspicuous that this combination is ideal for street and event photography. It's like taking photos with your smartphone.
You have a great eye Rob and I’m impressed by the results you achieved the lens.
Thanks! I try.
Loved the before & after images! It shows the potential. Going to buy one after watching this.
Thanks.
Your editing is very good.
Thank you!
Quick and helpful review. Thanks a lot! 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Good review, and thanks for the settings. I'm putting it on a X-T3
Glad it was helpful!
@@RobTrek I got it in today. I wasn't ready for how sharp the little lens is. A fun lens.
Rob: Great video !!! I've learned so much from your MFT videos as I own an EM10 MarkII and a EM1 MarkII. Generally, your videos feature Olympus products. However, I noticed in this video that you are using a Fuji camera and I am assuming its a APS-C format. How do you like it compared to your Olympus cameras ?
Thanks, William. I much prefer my Olympus cameras. Nothing wrong with the Fuji. I just don't like the controls or the menus. Not much difference in image quality, though if you push things, the Fuji will come out on top.
@@RobTrek Thanks for replying
It can be a very useful for street photography or video with BIS. I think the previous version has less flaring but anything below 2m is a bit blurry.
Thanks for your feedback!
Hey Rob, nice pictures 🪷
I hope you're doing well!
Thanks, Rod. Good to hear from you!
Rob Trek! Good review. Ive been debating picking this up for my EM5 mark ii for quick portable times out.
Olympus has the 15mm body cap lens which is about the same as this one in IQ. The 7artisans is easier to focus and much better made.
@@RobTrek that is the one i currently have and yeah it is 100% plastic. There is also the 9mm version as well. But this one does look pretty well made!
You'll be much better of buying a Sigma 19mm second hand. Cheap as chips as super sharp between f2.8 to f11.0
So much of digital photography is in the data processing. It is like the camera and lens plays only a minor part in image making these days unless you want scientific levels of precision and accuracy, or perhaps massive emlargement. Photography is for making art, for me (just wish I was better at it 😆) and you just demonstrated it perfectly with this low price lens, thanks Rob
Thanks. I try.
If this thing had filter threads… it would be perfect.
I’m looking at this lens to simulate my old 6x6 film camera with an 80mm for cheap. A 28mm full frame lens cropped to square gives the same field of view as the 80mm on 6x6, the 18mm will be about 27mm on my crop sensor :).
That math seems right!
Thanks for the review Rob.
Until recently I was using an Olympus E-M1 for my street photography and the lens I have certainly enjoyed the most is the Olympus 15mm f8 (caplens).
Relatively recently I acquired the Fujifilm X-E4 and was looking for a similar lens for my street photography. I tried the mark I version of this 18mm f6.3 but it was very disappointing. I guess I would get a lens that mistakenly passed the quality tests. The chromatic aberrations and lack of focus made it unusable.
I hope this II version has improved.
I think the main advantage to the this version is the manual focus. The imaqe quality is probably the same as the version 1. I'm only guessing since I don't have the version 1.
This a 'nice to have' fun lens which is cheap and lets me shoot photos like I do with a smartphone. Just enjoy being creative and free yourself from all the technical gizmos 😅
Hey ROB {missing the Sunday Morns with the TREKSTER} ...............bought into the NIKON system now Z 50 and went old school D7000 with a 18-105 kit lens ...the D7000 I traded off some of my vast Film stuff that honestly was collect dust ...I really feel lucky to still have my XT3 and Xt2 Fuji with the gambit of lenses for most of my Regular Photography Work but Planning on going Z8 in a year or so and moving away from Fuji .....this pancake lens looks so cool I might do it for the Z50 ....on the Z50 the tracking and color science is just unbelievable even at 20mp the low light is so impressive with this latest FIRMAWARE Updates ....... REALLY MISS the Sunday Live talk but I understand you probably have other priorities ....even myself I find I am very picky about when I do Social media ADMINing on my Facebook groups ......I have shed my duties on a few Groups already.....Life is funny ...my focus is more on project based shooting and not so much a concern about posting to the masses ...... I do hope your are well Sir ...please have a great Day and loving your instagram shots so awesome......BE WELL regards, Darko G
I was thinking about the Nikon Zfc. I didn't like how light it felt in the hands, but it's still cool looking. I still do the livestreams, but just once a month now.
@@RobTrek Guess I missed them for awhile but I did not see the LIVE STREAM in my feeds ????? Hmmmmmmm ??? Wondering if YOU TUBE is not sending me the Link ...??
@@dgorenc66 I'm trying for the third Sunday of each month. This month might be the exception since it's tax season.
I whish they'd have it as 23-25mm for APC version
Not quite understand why someone would want f6.3 max lens :) But thanks for nice and warm review
Thanks for watching!
Hi Rob,if you were to pick between the Olympus 15mm bodycap lens and this lens, which would you go for? I’m deciding between the two 😅
I'd get the 15mm because it's usually cheaper to buy. It has a little better contrast too.
Your SOOC quite great!
Thanks!
Sir can I use this to Nikon d7100?
Sorry, this is a mirrorless camera only lens.
I have the original UFO version and I like it but can’t seem to find the updated version 2 for M4/3’s. Any clues? Thanks.
It should be available soon. It was just announced shortly before I made this video. I would have preferred getting the m4/3 version myself!
the stupidest lens I have owned ... i love it
If I had a small camera I used for pretending it was a film camera I would consider this lens for a bit of fun and the retro experience. But with my limited budget I’d prefer to put the money towards saving for a lens I would actually get a lot of use out of. Maybe now this mark 2 version is out someone will be selling their old mark 1 copy for £10, then I might be tempted 😂
Can't argue with that. Always better to get the best you can when you can.
It might be a fun lens but I just can't see the point of buying this very poor (IQ wise) lens. Why waste our hard earned money?
You'd really have to want a tiny lens. There are certainly other options at slightly higher price points.
@@RobTrek I do have a pancake lens, a Pana 14mm/2.5. It's a great lens but wider than the 18mm 7Artisans, hence my comment about a cheap 2nd hand 19mm Sigma.
@@TL-xw6fh The sigmas are hidden gems in the m4/3 lineup. Oly has the 17mm f/2.8 pancake.
