One of the main things to understand is that he did them on THE FIRST ATTEMPTS
Not the third dunk, ESPN didn’t show him missing the first attempt on that one
@@Blakviet05 he missed the catch but not the dunk that's why it's different
@@Blakviet05 So
@@Blakviet05 Tracy threw a bad bounce pass. He didn't even attempt the dunk.
So did Gordon and Lavine (except 1)

@@johnnydenmark6477 in today's contest though these are all meh dunks....These were groundbreaking dunks in 2000, but high schoolers do these in warm ups now 😂 nostalgia makes it seem like it's better than it was. The technical and creative standard is MUCH higher now for contestants. That's why it's harder. 2016 Gordon vs Lavine proves that. Those dunks were actually insane
it was incredible back then! A cant miss!
A lot of dunks you know are difficult but there is something different about vince’s dunks. They are beautiful...it’s like his execution and movement is so fluid and clean.
Indeed. He looks majestic dunking
The 2nd dunk was just the same as the first dunk..

What a piece of work is a man and pooooowerrrr
Along with energy he brought with it afterwards.
The power
He would've done a 720 the final round if he needed to. Opponent messed up so he could've played it safe

That elbow in the rim dunk is legendary.
But did he do it over Shaq???

actually, kobe did it before him. but in some off season event in 1998. Back in the days the media and internet wasnt that popular like nowadays. So videos and news were not spread out well
@@charlieqq123 Yes, that is correct. Kobe did it in 1997, but off one leg if I remember right (or with a left-right plant, not sure which). Vince also heard about the honey dip dunk from Jameel Pugh, a few months earlier.
The elbow in the rim dunk is special and seeing everyone’s reaction makes it so much better 💯

Not only is he playing, he is still doing windmill dunks.
Trae Young was still in diapers and pissing on himself when Vince was doing this. 20 years later Trae never grew anymore hair from that day.

this was TWENTY years ago!!
Imagine all that pressure and easily exceeding expectations that night!🐐
For my money especially as a 12 year old witnessing this live in February of 2000... This was the single greatest performance in NBA Slam Dunk history. Not to mention T-Mac and Steve Francis showed out that night as well.
Facts bro. I remember laying on the floor. And turning to it that day. I was 11 years old. And I was blown away. I did not think 18 years later. This would be legendary. I was just living for the moment
Stackhouse was also in that contest. Thats what it should be about, your brightest stars competing, not a bunch of rookies.
Vince Carter is a special talent and is missed. A great decade of basketball. The modern day NBA drop off is sad for basketball lovers.
What drop-off? 1. I’d argue that this NBA is more fun due to the fact that there’s more competition and almost 1/3rd of the league’s teams are title contenders, 2. There’s clearly a larger pool of talent than in the 2000s, if you’re talking about the dunk contest it makes since, this year sucked and VC was great, but to say there’s been a decline in the NBA’s quality is incredibly myopic.

Bro I miss Vince and the electricity that he brings to the league, but drop off? Tf are you even watching, bro we got an absolutely amazing season ahead of us and some of the best basketball ever being played. The kings are exciting with the beam team, the Nuggets are modern basketball perfection, the Pelicans look fuckin nasty with Zion, Literally half of the league could potentially contend for the title or at least make a deep playoff run. Ain't no drop off here, this is some of the best hoops we've had in years and it only looks to get better man.
I remember watching this live and I couldn't believe what I witnessed. I often come back here just to relive that moment again
It was a great night. Saw it live in a bar and everyone was caught up in the moment. Vince was all amazing
Vince Carter first dunk and third dunk had everybody shooked
@Kingston few he might've had the best dunk but overall his dunks weren't as good. He still deserved the win though which was bull.
Kingston few was it more difficult ? Of course but if we talking about elegance with power none tops Vince
@@qcthesxientist na Gordon's dunks were better, but prime vince could only go with what was thought possible at the time, if you get prime wilkins, mj and vince in this era they'd be able imo to do all these dunks, at least most of them
@Kingston few Gordon's dunks were better because of the era. If you go at the dunk contest, you ought to do dunks no one has ever seen before that time, or at least do a difficult one that only selected few could.
Aaron did great ones because of the past competitors setting the bar every year.
@Kingston few But Carter was the most innovating dunker in that era. The actual dunkers been inspired in Vince Carter style.
This guy is the reason a lot of people including myself started watching basketball. Led the all star voting 3 times in a league that had kobe, shaq, iverson and old jordan

Led 4 times. But led 3 consecutive times in a row .
@J P he didn't say he voted him for the all star, he only said he started watching basketball because of Vince carter

It’s so cool seeing all the camera flashes in the background when he dunks. Before people had iPhones and everybody had a disposable camera
I still come back to this. Vince just had a different swag to him when dunked the ball, the way he jumped and contoured his body was like no one else in the dunk contest
