I'm watching your BA videos out of sequence and sporadically. Short, like this one, is superior. Your medic and this HE videos have been stellar learning tools without making me sit through pointless commentary! I love it. Also, I'm a fan of your artwork. There's no need to bring in fancy battlefields for these. Maybe others, but so far you're doing really informative and approachable work (approachable being something most wargamers cannot do).
Cheers Dane and thank you so much for the kind feedback, really makes making the series worthwhile! When I was thinking about making them, I wanted them to be the sort of videos that I wished would have been around when I first started playing Bolt Action. The objective was to make short, concise and clear videos without trying to cram every last rule into it. I think that would defeat the object of the idea of basics. Thanks once again, much appreciated ☺
Hey Chris, that's brilliant thank you! I'm really glad that they have helped you. That is pretty uncanny buddy! The next video is going to be all about artillery including movement, tows, crew etc I'm hoping to have it on the channel by Monday 😀👍
Really enjoying this series Ste and as I mentioned I'm saving them for future reference for when I eventually get enough figures to try a game. You have made them clear and simple and as a result easier to remember...but I'm still going to have to save them...it's an age thing 😂
Thanks Keith! One good thing about Bolt Action is that once you have played a couple of games, the rules are pretty easy to remember. It isn't one of those games that requires a constant back and forth between the table and the book. You may have to check for the odd weapon info line or a rule that doesn't crop up too much but, that aside, there isn't a lot of referring to the rule book :)
Thanks again Steve. really useful video. Had to scratch my head a bit to find the PEN +2 stat for the medium mortar, as it's not written down on the overview Playsheet. (page 70), but great video, and i look forward each time to picking up some rules, in a friendly and helpful manner.
Cheers Allan! Yeah, sometime it can involve a bit of scrabbling around looking for a specific piece of information but it is always found in the end. Thats awesome thank you, I'm really glad that you are finding the series helpful :)
My understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) is that the +Pen is equal to the blast radius in inches. So a He 4" would have a +4 Pen, for instance.
That's awesome, cheers Cal! When I was thinking about making a series of videos like this, I had in mind those gamers that were thinking about playing Bolt Action in the future or those very new to it. Hopefully they will provide a stepping stone :)
That's really awesome, cheers Paul! My aim is to keep them pretty short and to not go overboard on detail. Hopefully this format will both clarify a specific rule or mechanic or be a catalyst for new players to pick up a rulebook and start their own armies 😊
That's awesome thank you! I didn't want to overload people with too much detail so decided to keep them short and to the point so I'm really glad they've been a help for you. Hope your dice rolled well in your recent game 😀
Thanks Fraser, that's great thank you! I'm really glad I started to create the series as there has been some wonderful feedback but it's also helped me as a bit of a rules refresh 😊
@@OnPointHQ I think we could all do with refresher courses regarding wargame rules, all out of practice! Been to 2 club meetings recently as we've been given the all clear by the hall committee. Have to wear masks etc. Four of us were playing muskets and tomahawks, we set up,deployed the troops, looked at each other and said ' what do we do now?!!' ☺
Hahaha! That sounds like an uncomfortable gaming moment! I think if I hadn't made these videos I think I may have faced a similar problem when it came to playing Bolt Action again. Currently under local lockdown again so no gaming for the the foreseeable 😕
No worries dude. I think HE is an area of the rules that can be a little ambiguous when you read through them. Hopefully the video made it a bit clearer 🙂👍
what about HE against open top vehicles like a german half track? It's confusing in the rulebook as it's always talking about top covered armored vehicles
Hey buddy, that's a really great question. Shots that land on any upper hull of an armoured vehicle, including open topped vehicles like half tracks, counts as +1 penetration. If we use the medium mortar in the video as an example, if the shot hits an open top vehicle, we add the penetration from the mortar of +2 and the additional +1 for it being open topped/upper hull shot for a total penetration of +3. In addition, when rolling on the damage chart, a +1 is added to the damage roll 😊
Can you clarify the way a multiple autocannon weapon works? Like the Wirbelwind, do the 4 light autocannons upon hitting every shot throw 4D2 pins on an enemy unit? Or do the 4 light autocannons count as one heavy weapon therefore only putting 1 D2 pins on the enemy unit? Thanks
If a target goes ‘Down’ does the firer d get -2 to hit as well as halved damage? The FAQ appears to suggest it does but the rule book isn’t clear to me.
Hey Sam, yes that's the way that we play it. But remember if the fire is indirect fire from something like a mortar, there won't be any -2 modifier as these weapons are ranging in rather than firing directly at a target :)
Hey, thanks for the question. The pen value only applies to the damage roll against the target. So if a weapon with a +2 pen value sucessfully hit a unit of veterans, it would damage on a 3+ rather than the usual 5+. If the target unit was rated as regular, figures would be removed on a 2+ rather than a 4+. The pen value represents the additional strength of the weapon in dealing out damage 😀
@@OnPointHQ I know I asked this question 8 months ago, but I really appreciate the detailed response! Your videos are the best Bolt Action rule explanations on RUclips!
What is your opinion on making a Stug III or a StuH 42 vehicle? The Sturmhaubitze 10.5 cm short gun has a better HE but less pen than the Sturmgeschütz's 7.5 cm ... I am thinking of making the barrel maybe magnetic and swappable.
Hey Andras. I would probably go with the magnetic option. I'm not much of a competitive Bolt Action and I usually just go for whatever looks good or fits historically into my list. With that being said I think everyone loves a StuG III 😀

I love these videos, they have helped me so much. Looking forward to more.
Could you discuss getting artillery on and around the board.. tows etc...

Clear and concise mate a cracking series.
That's awesome cheers Paul! It's been a really enjoyable series of videos to put together and hopefully they've helped a few new or aspiring players 😊
Thanks for these videos. Never played BA but feel I would be more confident now if I did.

Another great video for the rules!! Great work!
Thanks Victor! I know that this is one particular rule that changed from the first edition so hopefully it clarifies it in a simple way 😊
This is the most comprehensive Bolt Action help on the web. Putting Warlord to shame.

Super helpful ty so much for doing these videos appreciate it greatly. Ty
your videos are great for refreshing the basics after not having played in a while, I feel a lot more prepared to stick it to them Ruskis tomorrow :D

Reach 10 lesson. Impressive. Nice serie.
Thanks Lucian! Yeah I didn't think it would get to ten but I think I have a few more topics to cover before I'll consider it finished ☺
Interesting and nicely done!
Thanks Phil! It's a rule in Bolt Action that can often be a little confusing so I'm hoping this simple example will help to outline it clearly 😊
Enjoying the series Steve 👍

Hey Steven, no worries mate, I'm glad you're enjoying the series 😊👍
Aim near the feet if the ankles disappear then you learned how to use HE" - Someones Badass Grandpa
That should definitely be in the instruction manual for the effective use of HE! 😅
ik this is recent but question, do tanks carry both AP and HE shells?
Thanks buddy

Yep it’s one I keep having to go back to.

They count as 1 heavy weapon.

@@OnPointHQ thanks for the reply. Seems odd to me to get the benefit twice but makes sense that indirect fire doesn’t suffer for it.
Does the +2 pen value count only in the damage roll or do you add that into the firing roll as well?

I made mine magnetic. The 105 is a squad deleter, so if you’re not up against much armour, it’s the way ahead.
If you need a comedy resource for how not to pronounce a 'h' - find a video on the rules of HE ;-) (Huhaych-E)
