  • Hello Everyone!
Alongside the release of the original Alan Wake was a book written by one of the in-game characters. Clay Steward travelled to the town of Bright Falls after Alan vanished. He investigated the writer's disappearance and compiled his findings into a book called The Alan Wake Files.
While in Agent Nightingale's room at the Majestic, Clay uncovered a copy of 'The History of Bright Falls'. A common book written by a Conrad Breaker. In it is an article that deals with the Oddities of Bright Falls.
In today's video we will be looking at another of the Oddities of Bright Falls that was included in Breaker's Book. Around the lake, various sightings have been made of the so-called Dark Cloud. What is it exactly? I think we have an idea.

Imagine how often we've experienced things like this. When I was a child playing in front of my garage in the country, near fort sill, I saw a floating ball of lightning and it nearly came into my garage. Disney programming made me think Ooo fairy Godmother....but something someone said if I touched it I'd die. And then it floated away years later and I see this phenomena actually exists.

Indeed. Sky quakes, the Seneca guns; the ogopogo, Champ (the Lake Champlain creature), ghosts…there’s a still a lot we don’t understand. What are the Seneca guns? How are they created? Why do some people see ghosts? Why do some places that are cut off from electricity have fluctuations in heat and cold (the hot and cold spots related to ghosts)? What is the loneliest creature in the world? Has it found a mate? Are there more? These are questions I stumble upon on Reddit.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the insightful, meaningful, and entertaining content that you've uploaded for the Remedy Games over the years. As AW2 is just around the corner, I can't help but think of all the hard work you've put into these videos. You've compelled me to buy and read every bit of literature relating to these games. Thank you so very much again.

It would be nice to get a wider selection of lore but I am just happy to get UK based mythology, we have multiple millenia of history and folklore to draw upon and yet it is always (if even mentioned) stonehenge, King Arthur, Loch Ness, Robin Hood, and leprechauns. We have so so much more in our rich culture, you can not throw a stone without hitting something ancient or involved in some myth.

One of Alan Wake 2's characters appears to be a water/sea god taken right out of the traditional Finnish pantheon. And then there are all the connections the Alan Wake games (and other Remedy games, too) have with Norse mythology.

To add to my other comment, what is notable about Remedy's games is that they are basically pieces of Americana imagined by a Finnish company. That is the kinds of stories that are based in the US, made according to American themes, story conventions and tropes. So they must be grounded in American/Anglo-Saxon folklore and mythology to some extent (and that very much includes modern folklore) to ring true to people playing them in the US.
I guess some of the unsettling atmosphere in Alan Wake or Control might be due to the effect of the situation described above: things are pretty much like they should be, but there still is some undefinable strangeness to them, due to Remedy's Finnishness. These games are still made from an outsider's perspective, and they are almost necessarily metafictional, not just deliberately but also due to their origin.
It is only since Control Remedy has started to lean more into its Finnishness in game content, and this will be seen in Watery in AW2. It seems to me that Ahti in Control was a way to test the waters on how people will take to it, and as he has been almost universally liked, Sam Lake et al were emboldened to double down on Finnish things in AW2.

(well while writing the first part with the questions i did some research on the aw wiki and found some answers i was able to make an answer with.)
    i just noticed something,
the brothers are the only characters to not disappear after using the dark places power knowingly while also letting the presence out,
is there a reason for this or not, on the topic of that why did they willingly use the places power in the first place and was it a song that let the presence in or was it a full album.
well i have come up with an answer thank's to the power of research,
(im typing this after the fact to say that this theory is way to detailed to be right and the creators at remedy probably didn't think to hard about this so this is technically bordering on the edge of being a fanfic)
they tried to save bob balder the basses of the band, who if the Alan wake wiki is to be believed suffered from leukemia, after researching how long someone will usually last after being diagnosed it can be assumed he was likely diagnosed in 1975, so by the time the 1976 awe happened he would have had leukemia for 1 year by then, and going through grief along with the rest of the band, and might have been going through the stage of grief known as bargaining, so finding out that the lake in the town you call home can bring fiction to reality then why not use it to try and save you're dying friend, so they created "The Black Rider Cometh", if i were to dissect the name to find some sort of meaning then the dark rider may be death or grief, a role the dark presence played when the album was made into reality, but the reason it failed and took no-one was that balder was never cured,
both Thomas and Alan had a climax where a sacrifice is made, the sacrifice being themselves, but the sacrifice needed them to die and or go to the dark place,
but balder was going to die of leukemia anyway's and a trade with the dark place was never made in the first place like with Alan saving Alice or Thomas bringing barbera back, so nothing was owed to the presence, and creating can help the creator go through grief, so here's what i suppose,
"the black rider cometh" was the cause of the 1976 awe, it was made as an attempt to save bob balder (toga's basses) from his leukemia, it was about death and grief, but making the album helped them accept that balder was going to die, and at some point they realized that using the dark place gave power to the dark presence letting it in, so by the end of the album's creation it shift's from being a struggle against death to being about accepting that you will die and to make the most of you're remaining time alive, so when the dark presence actually unleashed it wouldn't win failing to do anything other than killing some people and destroying the town.
now for something that's actually possible, the member of toga known as loki Darkens, the bands 2nd guitarist disappeared shortly after toga released there second album "Follow Me Underground, now this could be a reference to the fact that loki in norse mythology was tied to a rock underground as punishment apparently, but i think by using the name of the album another conclusion could be reached, the norse goddess of death was called hel, a daughter of loki actually (welp, the theory im about to propose has a big issue now), now with all of this i think i can give a good swing at explaining what made loki disappear,
barbera jagers possessed by the dark place led loki to cauldron lake and he followed her into it ending up in the dark place where hes trapped.
the underground is the dark place and hel is the dark presence.
and with that my mad rambling's about video game lore is over.
