Absolutely one of the best lectures I've ever listened to. Michael Holick is a great presenter, not to mention the fact that he qualifies his statements by so much research. Many THANKS for the superior web seminar. Much appreciated. I've already passed it forward to many friends and acquaintances. I hope they'll learn as much as I did.

33:25 The reason genes change with varying levels of vitamin D is because that is what we evolved to do. We evolved to have a mechanism to slow down body systems to survive winter food shortages. A low D level is the signal to slow down body systems. See this short video Why Does Vitamin D Exist? ruclips.net/video/vjq5t1GWb_Y/видео.html

Not so sure about the tables... I'm 65 and live in Florida. Wearing a T-shirt and shorts I get about 12 hours of sun a week and I take 5,000 IU a day of D3 in oil and have been doing so for several years. On January 3rd my serum level was 42.8. My body fat is 17% and my BMI 24 as I lift weights and cycle a lot.

Could be a number of things: the kind of test you had (suspicious of many OTS test kits accuracy if you’re using a home kit), your liver function or kidney function (D3 metabolism), the quality of your D3, skin pigmentation on the Fitzpatrick scale….

What I found interesting about this @21:10 was: pink group PRE D (27.5ng) was in blood serum concentration to the purple group POST D(25.1nl) - after D was included the genes were totally switched off even though they were practically the same serum level.
This suggests that it's not just a case of having a certain concentration of D3 for the gene expression to kick in hard. It looks like the state of the genes before the D was included has an effect to what level that actually gets expressed.

It's really a shame that you don't go more into the genes that show decreased expression after supplementation, for instance are they genes for inflammation or?

The ozone layer is placed "further away" than 5000 feet (and thanks for that)

Holick gets enough basic stuff wrong that it is difficult to trust much of what he says. (Not that everything is wrong, by any means. But...)

If anyone still monitoring questions in comments. Looking for info on specific findings on mutations and indications in VDR gene. He did not touch on this but it is four years later. Looking for reference turns out I have three that ar double homozygous and believe there is impact to my receptor ability. Need help understanding changing effect for better, thanks

boron will help absorb...research this at pubmed. Also magnesium and k2. 10 to 20 milligrams of boron would be prudent along with the d. 100 micrograms of k2mk7 for each 10000IU of d.

Thanks for a very interesting lecture!
About 12 minutes into your talk you mention that people living at 5000 feet (like in the Alpes) can produce vitamin d year round, and so won't produce TB. You say it's because there is only little ozone up there. I think you got that wrong. The increased vitamin d possibilites at 5000 feet are down to the fact that the radiation has less atmosphere to penetrate when you live up there than if you lived by the sea for instance.

And by the way, using sunscreen on your face is probably not wise, OK enough from me :) Thx for your lecture!
