Man, you gotta love Richard Dobson's songwriting. Unpolished and rough yet solid and original. It's a great core sample of the 'real' music and songwriting that came from the Northeast Texas area since long before his time and his lyrics are steeped in the culture, local jargon and general mindset of that particular region. "Flatwoods-" was an adj. used by locals to describe certain characteristics uniquely originating from that area. I grew up around people just like him. Same dialect, same mannerisms, everything. From what I remember he used to work as a 'roughneck' oilfielder around the Tyler and Kilgore area of Northeast Texas before saddling up with Guy Clark and gang and rolling out to Tennessee. Great Texas singer songwriter from a RICH and age-old TX tradition.

Messy and brilliant in all the right ways. Musical gems like this will fall by the wayside for a few three four decades again, then they'll be rediscovered and recognized for what they meant in light of meaningful music, in that time, in that place, in the heart of America. A beautiful cycle it is indeed! Thanks for sharing!

Five-hundred miles from the Mexican border
The days getting shorter, the nights getting colder
Hard by the highway he leans on her shoulder
A little bit tired and a little bit older
The days keep on running down through the seasons
Running like prairie fire, wild with no reason
The Devil's to pay for the moments he's seizing
Still nothing is lost that's left to believe in
He's got little to lose and his only companions
Are the liquor that he loves, the rambling and the gambling
The coyote answers from back in the canyon
Hungry for more than plain understanding
Sometimes it gets hard, sometimes it's amusing
When kindness repaid is just an illusion
When blind men know best what to make of confusion
And dead men know nothing at all
Still he dreams of a lady who'll lay down beside him
He prays for the day when the sweet Lord will guide him
To one who might drain all the poison inside him
Let him hang up his boots with his traveling behind him
But it's five-hundred miles from the Mexican border
The days getting shorter, the nights getting colder
As hard by the highway he leans on her shoulder
A little bit tired, a little bit older

@blackestcracker I don't think he's actually pushing down. You can see the difference in finger position in the Amin and the G, the pinky is out further. Not that a passing C would be bad, make it a G sus4 chord, nice chord. But I don't think Mr. Dobson plays it here.
