Well considering I can't watch Waitin round to die without crying, I'd have to go with Mercenary Song by Steve Earle but That old time feeling with Steve Young on guitar is crazy good too. I really don't know man. I love all of them!
Pancho & Lefty. First time I heard it or Townes was from Heartworn Highways. And Heartworn Highways brought me to Otis, who took me to Guy Clark, Jerry Lee, Blaze Foley, and a whole lot more electrifying music. Thank you Otis for that.
Mercenary Song, Cpt. Flint and Waiting Around to Die, One for the One by Hiatt was cool to see. … I was playing Mercenary Song for a friend the other night and my cousin tapped him in the shoulder, gestured my direction and said “Listen to this song!… listen to this song.” We had a good inside joke moment! ;)
YES! FINALLY! Heartworn highways is my favorite documentary and one of my favorite films. I first watched it in September of 2021 because I knew about Townes and loved his music and after watching it I discovered Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and Steve Young, who I listen to constantly. Thanks for the upload!
@@otisgibbs I discovered your great channel through my love for Townes. Been watching every single video you put out since the first Townes one you did. I then went back and watched all the ones before the first Townes one.
Thanks for posting, Otis. Love these stories. Richard Dobson came to my attention through you and that has been a real treat. Reading his books and listening to his music led me to others..Pinto Bennett, Thom Jutz, for example. Thanks for keeping it alive. Stay safe
I got to hang out with Pinto a few times in Boise. Had to watch yourself around him, he'd reel you in with a grand tale, then spring the punchline on you... never see it coming. Great guy, sad when he died. Amazing artist.
I am going to listen to Richard Dobson right now. I have heard his name, I think when Guy Clark covered one of his songs but i never actually listened to him. A great interview, I have seen Heartworn Highways and one of my sons got me a CD of it.
I just discovered Heartworn Highways last summer, after hearing the respective version of "Waitin' Aound to Die" in the background of a video on Townes Van Zant; and been listening to the soundtrack constantly since then. "Waitin' Around to Die", "Old Time Feeling", and "I Still Sing the Old Songs" are my top three from the film.
The heartworn highways is pretty much my bible...I love all them dudes. I've seen most of them live, but Dobson is the only one I got to know more personally...we corresponded some for a few years before he passed. He was a stand up guy for sure. Thanks Otis for these snippets...cheers!
Oh, excellent, thank you. Spent hours on the Heartworn Highways two nights ago, looking at those singers, so young. Lots of great info in the comments, too. I think Desperadoes Waiting on a Train was my favourite. Townes had a way of singing, where his voice matches the lyrics to his playing so poignantly, though. The world could use a lot more stories from John Lomax3. He must have witnessed a lot of good, bad, and ugly from the lifestyle some of those guys were living at that particular point in time.
Your videos scratch that music fanatic itch Otis. You’ve got impeccable taste and a laundry list or amazing friends to talk too. I was actually thinking the other day about asking you for some book suggestions on country music history. Also, I’m always down a classic soul/funk/r&b rabbit hole. Keep up that great work man.
This man just drops names like there car parts . that's good stuff I'm gonna go find something to listen to. Thanx Otis. Because of you some will know, others won't forget. I'm in between.
Great stuff. I discovered Heartworn Highways trading bootleg tapes right around 2000. Just blown away of course. It was re-released on DVD not too long after that. In the same trade I got another Doc. that should be re-released for sure, The Other Side Of Nashville. Filmed in 82 or 83 and released on VHS in 84.
Isn’t there a bit on Hank Jr in there there’s a small snippet on here of it but I’m guessing there’s a lot more footage not much footage of Bocephus in his prime on here please upload it if you can
Just wanted to mention that I picked up the Richard Dobson book based off of your recommendation. I’m enjoying it, but I don’t want to finish it too quickly.
Lomax mentions Townes last album, that it could be his best, I’m guessing he means No Deeper Blue, but what does Lomax say at 6:07? Does he mentions different album or what is it.? Thanks
@@CleanHead oh ok, I guess i just assumed that she wrote it since she had recorded it before Heartworn highways came out but I'll admit I have't looked into it that extesively. Thanks for letting me know!
What's your favorite song from Heartworn Highways?

Old time feeling Guy Clark ...I also have a copy of the movie on dvd ..resently found it
Let’s Go All the Way! I’d really love to know more about Mac McGowan and the Wigwam tavern, and of Course Peggy Brooks

one of my all-time favorite movies. Hard to pick a favorite song but Guy and Rodney doing Keith Sykes "Country Morning Music" was pure joy.
That scene with Uncle Seymour crying to Townes' "Waiting Around to Die" is one of the greatest things ever recorded. Looove that scene, so heavy.
Heavy as sin!
Mr. Lomax is a treasure. Thanks for another awesome video.
Brilliant.. That was the most organic feeling doc of all time. I remember noticing that years ago when I first seen it. A musician can tell.
My second time watching this one,,,Mr. Lomax speaks with such emotion, wonderful memories for him.
A great recollection by a legendary figure.

I love this movie, a real period piece that will only grow as time goes on.
I’ve only seen the Townes and Uncle Seymour clips.
Powerful.

You have a good son. You should keep him.
Thanks
Great video! Mr. Lomax is a true gem. Otis keep 'em coming !!
Howdy Otis Gibbs Awesomely cool as always
Howdo! : )
love this story and the whole foods tie in you talked about
I somehow forgot about that Whole Foods tie in. I should probably watch my old videos every now and then. I might just learn something. ; )

It's crazy that you were able to find someone in the same room as that performance to interview, Otis. Your whole channel is crazy.

I've had lunch with John once during one of the early AMA conferences. Great stories, and HH is a fantastic film! Thanks, Otis!
my god i love this channel
Thanks Otis! yessir, more! David Allan Coe stories as well. If you can find a true one hahahahha
Wasn't Susanna Clark in on some of this? Was surprised she was not mentioned.
In the scene where Townes sings "Waitin' Around..." there is a woman who looks very much like Susanna, but I've never been quite sure.

It is such a cool book!
I love Steve Earle’s Elijah’s Church
I’d love to watch this movie but can’t find it anywhere
Where can I see the movie I’ve searched high and low but I can’t find it
Showtime

Love these stories! Who was the woman in the movie sitting next to Uncle Seymour?
Susanna Clark
Rodney Crowell -- "Bluebird Wine"
I didn't know it until recently but that song's an Emmylou Harris cover both versions are spectacular
@@Jack-iy6ic I b'lieve Rodney wrote that'n.
One (of many) of my favorite discoveries from watching this film.
