This is an explaination of how Reverse Osmosis is used in maple syrup production. Raw sap is the input to the Reverse Osmosis. Concentrated sap and pure water are the two outputs of Reverse Osmosis. We utilize two Lapierre Turbo's with two high pressure pumps and three membranes. Freddie and Oscar do 90% of the work! The evaporator creates the flavor as we caramelize maple syrup with heat.
A quick science experiment featuring electrical conductance in water and maple sap. We utilize 120 volts and a light bulb to visually explain thw relationship between water and electricity. Good times!

That's true. I didn't think of that - but you are right. There could be uses outside of the maple industry.

I'm glad to see you got your dryer fixed, so you can have your blue flannel. Lol awesome video so informative. One question if you weren't using the reverse osmosis how long would it extend your boil time?

Thanks for the lesson! This was interesting to learn about. I noticed you said your storage was full of permeate so you were just draining the rest at the moment down the drain. What do you do with the permeate normally ? Since it is just water do you use it throughout your facility instead of using the city water? And if so do you prefer to use the permeate for things like cleaning the equipment because it has fewer contaminants in it compared to the city water ?

We do use it to back wash the RO. I have often though about plumbing our building with permeate during maple season. The challenge is the permeate won't keep long because the little but of remaining sugar is a food source for microbes. It can become stinky after a little bit of time. No bueno to ingest! An unwanted probiotic!

@@BissellMapleFarm ooooohh yeah that makes sense about the microbes. I would imagine if you really wanted to make additional use of it then you would almost need to filter it again through a membrane that would purify it, but at that point you are putting in more time/effort than it is worth.

@@aSinisterKiid I think evaluating and potentially reusing permeate through our facility would make a great RUclips video.

@@BissellMapleFarm It would be interesting to see how many different things it could be useful for (If any). Especially if it could end up saving you money in one way or another. Anytime you can find a use for the waste/biproduct of your process's would seem better than just flushing it down the drain. I wonder if you could make your own bottled water with it, like specialty "Bissel Maple Water" or something like that haha.

It makes great water for outdoor woodboilers.

I think my high school chemistry teacher did this experiment with salt water. I think that's where this idea came from. He is a funny guy! Old Walter!

I thought you would have more faith in me, Mark! To be fair, I'm extremely tired during maple season and the probability of my electrocution and injury was not zero percent! Don't worry, you'll be able to laugh at my injuries soon enough! (As long as RUclips doesn't censor me.)
