Добавлен 23 окт 2014
We are maple syrup farmers in Northeast Ohio. We cut firewood, mill lumber and harvest maple syrup! We partner with maple farmers across the maple belt. We make maple syrup, we bottle maple syrup - we have the greatest job in the world! Innovation and relationships has been key to our success and is the key to our future. We are not afraid to look at ourselves when it comes to finding the solution to the problem!
We utilize outdoor power equipment: tractors, chainsaws, UTV's, and much more. We go on adventures all over - meeting and working with maple syrup farmers and suppliers across the maple belt.
Maple Syrup was never the goal, it is the glue!

🍁 Maple Syrup + Science = Packaging Innovation Ep 204

Innovation. Sometimes, it happens fast. Sometimes, it happens slowly. Sometimes, it doesn't happen. Using liquid nitrogen to package a food product is not new. However, this technology might prove helpful for bulk shipments of maple syrup. Ultimately, the goal is to make moving maple syrup as easy and low-cost as possible. It will take 2 years to complete this test and verify product quality. I...

Im glad joe is feeding u well. That can be a real blessing
I made the mistake of going with the cheaper tractor. I’ve been operating tractors for over forty years and the components on the LS Tractor much weaker than those on the John deere or Kubota. I have owned them all. If your intentions are to dig in the dirt or max out the loader capacity every time you use the tractor do not go with an LS Tractor. I have bent 8 different pieces and even broke a couple on the LS Tractor because the metal is cheap. I have never bent a part on the loader of any other tractor. Think about downtime and having to go to the dealer and buy expensive parts. LS Tractor parts are not cheap. My dealer charges me $40 just for an oil filter. The last loader part I had to buy as $500
@@toddd5703 a lot of truth and wisdom in this comment. Thank you.

Really good video, guys. I am a vacuum applications engineer with 30 years in vacuum. I specialize in dry screw vacuum pumps, and all vacuum technology. Please feel free to touch base. I would very much like to meet you.
Heck yeah, man! My email is in the description.
@@BissellMapleFarm I've got it and I will be dropping you a line. Really impressed by the amount of videos and the information. I found your channel needing to learn something about vacuum reliability in sap collection applications. I use to work for Atlas Copco and I'm very familiar with Leybold. Now I am with Ingersoll Rand with legendary vacuum pumps from NASH, Gardner Denver, Elmo Rietschle and MD Kinney. I'm not looking to sell you anything. I'm in the learning process and hoping to make some contacts and we will be here if you need us. I've solved more vacuum issues than I can shake a stick at. I really appreciate being able to learn so much about the commercial maple sugaring process from one source. Happy to return the favor if ever a vacuum pump or vacuum application question. Hey, hey Kevin
@SpencerLawnCare I'm a loser, ai need to touch base with you guys.
Was told that case, and new holland ( all built overseas) not sure about Deere but think maybe the small ones are also, are extremely hard to get parts for. This came from a parts manager (case ih)no LS dealer in Nebraska. Went with kubota because of dealer networks in the area. Haven’t delivered tractor yet, so I don’t know what I have yet. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
@@MrFarmer2345 I tend to lean toward the strongest dealers. Our dealer is strong.
Good Luck and be safe!
I would add a blower to remove loose leaves at beginning of the line.
@robertdesroches9642 They do have a blower set-up. There are two, but I might not have gotten a good shot of them. They run on the edges of the belt. Are you talking about an even bigger blower covering the whole belt?
Ohio Corn is the best 👍 to think about farming and i can actually say i miss baling hay in the summer
@geoffoutdoors you'd miss it for about 5 minutes! Unless you are in the air-conditioned cab! Ha!

Square baling is a young mans game. Also, It seems like people excepting $2.00/bale have driven a bunch of farmers away from them in our area.

@TheWeekendMedic that is true! We heard some good stories!
@@BissellMapleFarm very interested in your IBC experiments - I agree that this is the future of maple transport, especially for the first leg from the producer to the first bulk buyer (currently stainless barrel, whose cost I can't justify...) I wonder if the beverage industry has done some of this work - Cornell University (esp Extension service) and Hartwick College with their new beverage program likely have some insight.
@@TheWeekendMedic they can copy my notes and make spreadsheets if they want to. 😁
So you are trying to eliminate the oxygen to remove bacteria contamination or growth of bacteria by using nitrogen?
@tomwisted9089 that's part of it. It's not really the primary reason.
Interesting! Maple Science at its best.

I've been getting this distillers number one selling bourbon's barrel. Do you think there would be much of a flavor change if I went with one of their other bourbons? Or is bourbon barrel syrup roughly the same no matter the bourbon that was in the barrel beforehand?
@Dakk_Attack If the barrels are dumped at the same time, it would be difficult to tell the difference. Surprisingly, there are differences in barrel quality between high-end bourbon and lower cost bourbons. A wheated mash bill can make the syrup seem "sweeter".
@BissellMapleFarm so overall there really wouldn't be much of a difference as far as the customer can tell?
I dont know why but the Europeans have it better. 20 liter square canisters with air vents and spouts. The US is still stuck on the round pails, no vent, inefficient to store and carry, bruising your legs, ugh.
Traverse city is a great spot been going there for years. Love lake Michigan and my dad was a Yooper 👍

Nate, ya should have named the video "Lumpy3" lol.. Jonathan, you messed up man, you smiled on camera!
You are like a genius, George!!
So, you cycle the syrup through the larger barrels 3 times? How long do you leave the syrup in the barrel each time?
@frankeem3820 The syrup needs to cool and create a vacuum when it shrinks. That's pretty important.
@@BissellMapleFarm whiskey barrels are pretty hard to come by in my neck of the woods plus I don't have room for them. So I experimented with ordering the chopped up Bourbon Barrel chips. I put the chips in a 5 gallon sealable container and I put the hot maple syrup on the chips. Turned out pretty good I think. I had other people try it they liked it too. I don't know if it's as good as yours though.
@@frankeem3820 we sell our product to about 30 maple farmers at this point. They probably have more profit, higher quality, and less hassle than folks who make it themselves.
That’s a Fact Jack ! Great Business you got going on 👍
Love the passion Nate, setting an industry standard is where it's at. 💪🏼
Is there a specific reason why you started with the larger diameter as opposed to the smaller diameter? Maybe I missed something.
@davidpatterson5728 no reason. That's the way it was facing, I guess. But I don't really want the large end hanging off the mill, now that I think about it.
So you buy used bourbon barrels for your bourbon syrup, then sell them back so they can make maple flavoured bourbon?
@AlexMakesMaple Ah, you are close. We buy freshly dumped bourbon barrels to make bourbon BBL (barrel) aged maple syrup. We say BBL for short-hand. And every barrel has a home before we purchase them. Which essentially keeps out cost for barrels at zero. So, it doesn't matter if we triple barrel age... the cost of barrels does not really impact our business. Availability does sometimes. So, while everyone is worried about the cost of barrels... we leaned in... people were too worried about the wrong things. Flavor and quality are the primary responsibilities. Cost is a secondary issue. Too many people make it the primary issue. And then cut corners.
Great video Nate, there is a lot going on there. Even the best engineers cant figure things out the first time around. Keep up the great work everyone. Hope to see you in October.
