  • This one's a little bit different as we're looking at the RMT2100 remote control units for the Sony SL2100 (Japanese market) SL-HF2100 (US market). Really amazing pieces of tech for the time.
Hope you enjoyed this one and lots more to come.
No chapters in this one as it's a bit messy! Really sorry there is a bit of confusion on which remote is which but it's a side-effect of repairing these over several months...

i have never seen one of these before very cool i never would have guessed it was for a beta machine had it not been in your title .My 1984 sony 18 inch semi portable crt from 1984 i found the remote model from the service manaul and found the only available remote on a world wide search of ebay ,there are a few people with the same remote on a facebook crt group who would like the remote ,I was lucky i got it for a donation of £2 towards postage in the end as the seller tested it and found a button or two not working .

Certainly a very unique remote but they can be a bit clumsy. You can only set the clock from the remote though so it a bit of a necessity! That's amazing on your TV remote - that worked out perfectly for you. Did you manage to get the faulty buttons to work?

Hi Alex, I can send you a replacement power supply if you need it as a backup but it is strange to see that die on you as i have a few of these machines and that has never happened to me, The SL-HF2100 does have the same supply and not a transformer as i also have the US version.

Hi Aaron, thank you SO much for this. Leave it with me and I'll have a look at the power supply on this one but it's very useful to know you have a spare if it's needed. Interesting on the US version being the same too - may well mean it could be tweaked to at least accept 110v rather than 100v. I'll drop you an email just now my friend, too.

Really quite an unusual remote control. It can be frustrating with being trolled on these videos but the ones doing it are the ones with the issues and not the creators in many cases - just not appreciating the different styles and types of techie and how they work that are out there.

I'm lucky to have 2 of these remotes (and HF2100s) in working order, although the display lights are rather dim. Not sure if they were much brighter when new. BTW, there is a high-frequency whine audible during this video. What caused that? Thank you!

Yes, the LEDs are not that bright at all - LED tech was still so in it's infancy back then but amazing how Sony went down the route of making these. The high-pitched whine is from the wind at the window!
