"Who needs a 40 dollar backpack when you could make one yourself out of a 20 dollar tarp and 40 dollars worth of paracord?"
That's how much paracord cost where your at!?
Hell, even the crazy prices up North in Nunavut aren't even that crazy...
and the prices are CrAzY.
I could see a tarp costing $20 though.
@@RyanStonedonCanadianGaming it depends on how much you want, what kind of weave it is, etc. But they used an awful lot, so i may have hyperbolized a bit
@Ching Chong oh honey thats not real paracord it barely rope
@@ShugoAWay Nahh, the big bundles are crappy rope, but you can definitely get some decent paracord at Dollar tree. It's probably only like 50 feet, and I wouldn't trust it for climbing, but that's more than sufficient for this project.
Go to goodwill and buy a decent old blanket, and ignore buying paracord and just get some similar cordage that doesn't cost as much.
I love kickin back and listening to my two dads teach me scout tricks
same!!
same
I actually was a boy scout and they are lashing extremely wrong.
@@Prs722 that's kinda the point, they jsut mess Aroud it's not meant to be perfect of even good
@@29wildfire55 I realize that as well. It's entertaining watching them fumble their way into a not so perfect solution. Sometimes it goes their way and sometimes it doesn't (like failing to dissolve a piece of pork lie and making super flammable hydrogen.)
I like how Jason was finally doing something right with his lashing, then Brian touched it and it went downhill from there lol
Everybody else: "if you cant tie knots, tie lots."
Modern Rouge: "if you can't tie knots, melt it."
If you fail to aspire, set sh** on fire
That's what you get for watching a Make up channel. (Rouge)
Me: If you can't tie knots use wire
Seeing how some people tie knots, the Modern *Rogue* probably have a better concept.
They make me die inside everytime they touch a rope...
2:35 Funny story... When I was on the road moving cross-country, I had a tarp tied down in the back of a pickup truck, and I had read about every protocol, tied every Boy Scout knot, and dried up every ounce of knowledge I had about me, and the tarp still came loose three times.
On the third emergency pullover, the other person got out in the worst rainstorm ever, and tied an abomination of dozens of simple overhand knots, on all four corners of the tarp, and it made it for the entire drive.
Just goes to show you, you can plan everything right and roll a 1, or just Leeroy Jenkins it and manage to land a Nat 20.
Knowing Knots is one thing but knowing when to use which knot is another.
So, if your hiking friend dies, you can take his jeans and make a backpack.
@@Laugh1ngboy "I keep a spare pair of pants, in my pants". You could actually say that. Haha.
Or you could just keep spare jeans in your hiking backpack 🎒
@@Laugh1ngboy I know mate, I was just making a joke about keeping more pants in a proper backpack so u don’t have to hike in your undies up in the mountains
And harvest his body for sustenance!
Learn to cure leather and you can make even more.
This episode feels like watching your wildly unqualified camp counselors attempt to teach you scout tricks. I love it by the way
"I thought it was gonna be a death trap....... I mean it is now..... but for different reasons....." We need further explanation into this.... Is it filled with murder hornets? Did you rig a punji pit out front of it? Does it have claymore mines around its perimeter? PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW!!!
It's probably full of spiders and maybe snakes
Pretty sure it’s because it’s a confined space during a pandemic
I’m very interested in what happened to it as well… PLEASE TELL US WHY!
It's probably the Meat Mongers again.

The Modern Rogue learns shibari
The addition of the blowtorch makes me deeply uncomfortable
I would totally watch them do Shibari
wtf
Unus annus did that

good day, fellow wēēb.
I’m waiting for the day that “New from The Modern Rogue: Improvised pants” shows up in my inbox
That actually would be useful
"How to make pants out of a backpack"
Everyone would watch that super successful/trainwreck video.
The Roycroft pack gets better when you start with the tarp tied up like a drawstring purse (not necessarily a cord through the eyelets, but the shape like one). You then can tie the bunched up tarp part to the frames apex, and additionally fix the hanging purse part to the lower frame. To get a pack you can easily put down and pick up again, you'd use two shoulder straps (webbing or strips of cloth, hell, even pants legs would be more comfortable than cord) with a fixed loop that hooks on the lower tips of the frame. Whenever you want to put it down, you unhook the loops. Oriented after the Roman Furca, you can also add a long bar to the pack that goes over your shoulder, allowing you to put the load of your pack on the ground first, before taking it off (especially good for heavy loads). - A Bering pack might be worth a try too, it gives you a more closed package.
**a pantsless Brian standing in front of Jason** "Load me up! Fill me with the gear."
I think I need an adult.
Jason immediately tying an actual clove hitch is the most surprising thing of 2020
I was actually really disappointer that Brian interrupted his lashing. Jason was doing so well and then theu just decided to torch everything.
@@JD2jr. yeah, the video was great until that point. Then it just went downhill.
This channel is basically adult Boy Scouts, been trying to figure out how to describe this channel to my friends and that’s it.
It's called the modern Rogue that is the definition of immature adult Boy Scouts technically the ones that never passed the class
Also chemical warfare, but yeah.
It's adult girl scouts
Boy scouts are not coordinated and rarely ssfe
@@herokid789, I smell bias
Noah Tabor that’s the adult part.
Hear me out. New title. “Two homeless men smoke crack then make backpacks to hike while one does a strip tease”
When the MR community realizes that all they're getting for the Mystery Box is a bunch of improvised packs made hastily by Brian and Jason...🤔
no, they're getting three sticks, a tarp and a sheaf of rope. You pay for the experience of making it
Brian: "What are you doing?"
Jason "I don't know"
I present to you The Modern Rogue in a nutshell 😂

The stone is calling to you Brian.
Brian, come to the stone.

Nothing screams confidence like a man hiking in his underwear with his pants as a backpack.
5:22
Brian: "I can keep on goiiiiiiinnnngg..."
Me: "Ah, I see where Josie gets it from now..."
When I was a assistant scout master I would remember watching new scouts do stuff exactly like what they did tieing knots and loved seeing what they could come up with.
as a scout watching this hurts 😂
In all fairness have you ever seen your own first years do lashings properly?
As a retired scout (earned Eagle and moved on), it reminds me of a pair of unsupervised Tenderfoots jury-rigging their stuff badly. The only thing is that the BSA doesn't let 11-year-olds use propane torches.
@@benjaminbrockway5998 you gotta be at least 12 for those
17:22 On a pleasant stroll through the compound, Brian and Jason take a brief break to commune with the Ruinous Powers.
"If you don't know how to tie knots, tie lots" That's what I do.
-Brian wraps Jason with ropes- Jason: "we're gonna get demonized" lolol
Did I do it too well...
Something I never thought I'd hear on this channel
As an Eagle Scout who knows their lashings, this physically hurt
Are we just going to forget their little demonic experience during their “adventure” ??
ikr they cant just leave it there. Looks like it goes to another dimension
Not to mention the suspiciously small screen tears that happened earlier in the video.
What?1 When did that happen? Which video was that?
Nevermind I just finished watching the rest of the vid lol!
Actually I deciphered the audio and it literally says "Brian, come to the stone" so it's just the editors having fun lol
Imagine finding some dude out in the wilderness with a home made tarp, then whilst thinking that's pretty weird. Then he is followed by a man with pants for a bag.
The “going on an adventure” shots were fantastic lmao, no pants-brian
I swear the two of you guys make one whole Adam Savage
This was such a great episode. Exactly what I love about Modern Rogue.
I am astonished at the true craftsmanship here. From the tarp backpack to the no pants dance. Excellent work, guys. Adventure calls!! o7
Boy Scout here. Jason, that knot at the begining was amazing! Brian, your knots were also amazing, but maybe a little... different. I would LOVE for you guys to fly me out to Texas to teach you guys some knots, if you'll have me. I love your channel, and all your videos, keep up the excellent work!
Brian’s Fraps joke hit my soul and brought me back to when I was 11 watching someone do a Battlefront 2 (2005) mission
The shit you guys find to make videos with never ceases to amaze me 🤣
I'm gonna refer to the knot method as a 'blackened' rat's nest
When I was a tween, we made these in shop class. I used to live near an old building that was made out of a type of brick that was almost like a magnet for the "Chinese stars" as we wrongly called them. Every shot was a good shot that stuck right into that brick. I don't know what the material was, but we used to "karate chop" a pile of the unused bricks and they'd break, too, so they totally made us feel like Ninjas. We usually cut them into a simple 4 or 5 point star, and they worked great. Never thought about shooting balloons, but now I wish we had haha.
So Dope. Great tackle 👊🏾 🎒
Honestly the pant idea sounds amazing, especially if you have a belt you can put through the belt loops to make a much more secure tie, and along with that you could possibly tie the pant leg around the belt after its closed shut without needing any strings.
Jason has a plan and then Brian's ADD kicks in and they just end up doing whatever.
In boyscouts, we called them wraps and fraps. Really strong stuff for lashing together structures. We made a catapult with logs and rope only using lashing. It was awesome
Edit: I don't mean like a dinky foot tall catapult, this was 30 feet tall
I love how you guys are not afraid and even look forward to failing.
The right way is not the option
Gzuz! Fraps... God, you're old Brian... oh wait, that means I'm old :(
I was looking for this comment. Haha
Wait Fraps is old now?
People still use FRAPS, right?
I mean, by now, there are so many pieces of recording software that everyone uses something different (hyperbole), but I think Fraps still gets use.
I just looked it up, and it hasn't been updated officially in several years. Huh.
Ah well. Still gets used regardless.
Also, good job on using the correct "you're", filnn.
That's a happy surprise in the RUclips comments these days.
Well, so far you're doing a lot better than Red Green would've 😂
Boy Scout here, can confirm, it was a decent clove hitch knot
Total flashbacks to being "explorers" and climbing through whatever overgrown areas near home to build some palmetto frond fort. Asking the parental units to stay over so the fort could be completed before the end of the weekend. Too fun!!
When I did my OA Ordeal, we used Horseshoes. You take a tarp and lay it out with your sleeping bag on top. Put one change of clothes and your toiletries inside the sleeping bag and then roll it all up. Once it’s all the way rolled, tie ropes around the tube and bend it into a horseshoe, with rope bridging the two ends. You now have a backpack you can sling over your shoulder or carry around your head.
Well I did something similar but with the sleeping bag on the outside and leashed with a belt
OA was quite the journey. It rained the first night. I took shelter under my tarp and couldn't ask anyone for help
I'd go for the blanket roll, personally; it just looks cool.
Jasons face throughout the whole video is just "What is going on? Ill just go with it? But i will say well done on tiying that knot well.
Little tip if you don't have a lot of paracord, and aren't putting the full 550lb of weight on it - you can pull the core out of the cord, and it gives you (depending on the type or paracord) 4-5 extra lengths of cordage you can use.
Really good for projects like this, where you're using relatively short pieces to tie corners on a structure or frame.
I love how Jason came prepared and Brian's just like, fuck it, let's just throw some string at it, and then sticks Jason with the falling-apart pack
hehe Nice lashing Jason. They were really well done. That Clove hitch looked great. What would have helped, but been time consuming, is running a string through metal rings and made sure the entire tarp made like a satchel. Then lashed that onto the sticks. Still a fun concept of everything.
The square knot is the single most useful thing I've ever learned. And I'm just a suburban dad-type, not a particularly outdoorsy guy.
15:17
"Okay, roll for dexterity saving throw"
I learned how to do this in scouts! It's fun if your at summer camp and want to make a temporary structure for whatever, drying clothes, sitting down, pullups, whatever you need!
Edit: I was talking about when they were doing lashings and frapping, I never had to make a backpack.
I can just see teaching this to my Scout Den, "... and now, FIRE!!!!"
"Some paracord in case you need to fashion..."
A pair of pants out of a tarp? Lol.
I feel so bad for Brian's kids. There's a video on the internet of their dad taking off his pants to make a backpack. Even just the description of it is insane, but it doesn't even compare to the video
I've also heard of this as a Yukon Pack or a Hudson Bay Pack. either way best investment you could make is in an old ALICE pack frame and straps, tie up the tarp into a packet before attaching it to the frame.
I taught knot & rope work in Scouts & use Those skills professionally for decades. Watching this ( 5:00 ) at first was so cringe which turned into unbridled laughter over the next few minutes. LOL🤣
love the pant pack lads
All the riggers watching this just cringing at their knots😂😂 Great vid guys, love watching you give information and nonsense at the same time😂
The backpacks are really cool, I'm genuinely surprised by how well Brian's pants backpack held up!
You should totally do a video on different knot types. Also when cutting paracord you want to melt the ends to stop the inner strands pulling out.
More of this!
Nice clove hitch Jason.
You two are hilarious. I love you guys. I hope to run into you in the wild one day (I'm in Austin too)
I love how MR just has a blowtorch ready on set for situations like tying a knot
alternative title: The Modern Rogue does bondage
One note for your First Backpack: you would have wanted to wrap your first black cord around the base of your triangle a few times, as Murphy was jumping you could tell the tarp was sliding down and nothing but the horizontal wraps were keeping it up. Edit: at 15:30 the unsupported bottom decided it had enough.
One way to do this is started by wrapping around the middle of the triangle a couple times, then on one side run it directly over the frame pole diagonally, to then draw it along the back of the tarp to the middle of the base of the frame over that pole along the belly of the pack back up to the middle of the other side, and doing this a few times weaving a thin 'V' holding the bottom of the backpack up.
A note for your Pants Backpack: you will want to cinch the leg "straps" to the beltloops tighter than what you had on show, the paracord pulling on your shoulders with the weight of whatever you put in the pack will get quite painful real quickly! (for a similar example, if you have ever carried a gallon of milk in a plastic bag soon the plastic of the handles start cutting into your hands)
I like it. Also you can use a long sleeve shirt or sweater for most this. The sleeve make an excelant set of "flappie doodles" and the mid-section will make a pocket. You can use water bottle strips for lashings as shawn by that awesome Russian guy.
. . . And mule-tape is my favorite type of lashing, it's so user friendly
That fraps reference was fire though
Jason: I have prepared and I intend to make a real effort at getting this endeavor as close to correct as possible.
Brian: We don't have to do the exact same knots, in fact let's just do a butt load of garbage knots. And let's set them on fire because science. And instead of all this, I'm gonna take off my pants and make a sack out of those. And I'll sabotage your pack so mine is actually better. And then we're going to walk around while I'm wearing my pants on my back and your backpack is going to fall apart because I sabotaged it and I'll be in my underwear.
An improvised backpack out of a pair of jeans, is a very clever idea. It seems like the most obvious and perfect item to use.
Self Reliance Outfitters has a good video on this on their channel. Also it would be a diagonal lashing and look up the mark II square lashing. You should also run the rope from the top over the front of the shoulder and down to the cross stick and tie it in the front.
The Jeanpack aesthetic is legendary
i love u 2 ur my fav middle aged duo
There is a cool thing you can do with your pants to make a floatation device we did in boot camp when I was in the Marines that is sort of like your backpack
I once made a backpack out of 100% duck tape. Used it for a good few weeks. It worked well and actually held up nicely.
Lowkey the next gen mythbusters
Brian wearing his own pants as a bag was oddly the most satisfying part 😂
goggles definitely getting the o'l pink eye from the pants pack lol
#pantscheck Jason: On, Brian: Off
that there jean bag is a SWAG BAG
Cant believe i just spent amost 14 mins of my life with this lol
Nice clove hitch.
This is a great example of "It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to work!"
Lincoln logs was my favorite toy when I was a kid
feed sacks work really well for this
I already know how to make one of these.
The Burlap Backpack can be crafted by dragging sticks onto an empty Burlap Courier Bag, thus creating this backpack. The resulting item can be broken down into materials once it's assembled but there is a chance that some of the materials will be destroyed.
Easy AF
I spent most of this video trying to take things out of their hands.
"If you don't know how to tie knots, tie lots" is my new favourite line from The Modern Rogue
Jason and Brian are excited over making a backpack that is the equivalent of a rock climbers rope pack. 🤣🤣
I love how Brian tied the first one, found a not system that worked and from there made a second lashing with a whole new set of nonsense.
Right out of Fallout '76. Made from the finest Bethesda leather.
Going in to your first day of high school ready to learn with your new backpack.
Jason: I dont even... There's one strap..
Brian points into the distance, oblivious: We're going on a journey!
