Hi TGT or anyone, please help me understand. On APS-C I understand how you have to calculate the crop factor into the focal length and aperture ratings. And I understand how this will affect perceptual mega pixels as opposed to FF. My question is when the EOS RP crops when in 4K video. I understand on the EOS RP it will affect focal length, but does it also affect aperture like in APS-C cameras?

I'm strictly using the control ring EF adapter with EF and EF-S lenses. Such a nice ability to use both EF and EF-S lenses. The 10-18 mm EF-S has image stabilization and all EF-S lenses are budget friendly. The control ring is amazing, and I can't imagine not having the control ring anymore. I haven't purchased any RF lenses yet because they're so expensive. I did try them out and they're beautiful. But out of budget for now. My next lenses are 70-200 (which will be RF), a 35 mm 1.4 (which will hopefully be RF), and a macro lens (mostly likely the 100 mm EF one). I do want to get the ND filter adapter as well. However, it's disappointing to know that I will be losing the control ring when using the ND filter adapter. The other disappointment is knowing that the ND filter adapter doesn't come with a clear filter so the idea of having to swap adapters is pretty bad.
"Full frame is full frame" Your comment which is completely true is also a little misleading as obviously there is a point where a Full Frame camera will be able to get a shallower DOF that the APS-C cannot match unless you can find a lens with a super small f-stop but in general if you calculate the crop factor you can get the same image, both field of view and DOF in a APS-C camera. i.e. FF 75mm @ f2.8 produces the the same image as APS-C (1.5x crop) 50mm @ f1.8 - you would also have different ISO settings to match exposure.
Excellent review. I watched your breakdown very attentively and rate it as the best I've seen. You put in a great deal of detail, and even though I don't understand all the tech terms, I am now sold on the Sony a6400. Respect!
Both cameras are good at what they're offering. I'd not consider twice as my main goal is for compactness with video priority in mind. Therefore, a6400 is my best bet.
Here in Canada, the EOS RP is at least $100 cheaper than the A6400 so now for me it's a no brainer... the video is very informative regardless, keep it up!
going with the RP, though it has less affordable RP lenses, i have a few efs and ef lenses so an adapter is sufficient and also reduces the overall cost of getting a new camera. it's a full-frame camera too so this provide a better wide-angle/low light features. thanks for the review!
Fast forward to Jul 2020 here in Canada, bodies only are $1204.67 A6400 vs EOS RP $1199.99. For photography on budget, EOS RP. For videos, the A6400 might be better at least spec wise (can't tell as I have the RP). Body/handling + menu interface made me go for the RP plus ease of use right away

13:19 Yes? Is there one available? You've mentioned that the RP performs better at low-light/noise due to it being full-frame, but you also mentioned that the image quality is better at a6400 because it shoots better at low-light? I'm slightly confused.
if your focus is video for wedding events go to sony for low light capability,. ergonomics is not important if your focus videographer because you'll be using stabilizer and lighter camera is much better for wedding events. but if your main focus is photography go to canon, its offers more lenses and cheaper lense,. compared to sony. of course if your buying RF lenses that is much more expensive, but it offers futuristic features and very advance lense compared to other lenses. but you can still use adapter for older lenses that was very cheap.
@@sahindavidoff3098 videography is superb. Of course you need the right lenses (with stabilisation). If you don‘t like to work with tripots, you‘d be better adviced with the sony a6600, which has IBIS - just for a better performance without a tripot. Rolling shutter is there, but no factor for wildlife in my eyes.
I really appreciated your videos, very informative and helpful. But I have do disagree 1 thing. You said A6400 will perfome better in low light than RP. No way. Crop APSC sensors have never been better in low light than a full frame sensor, no matter how good the software is or how good noise reduction algorithm is. Yes, it can denoise so good, but lost a lot of details, when we zoom in, The clearer image look clean but plastic and lifeless, and we can not call this "better". Thank you ;)
Tech Gear Talk thank you. Some old ff sensor like the Canon 5D was not very good and maybe could be beaten by some new gen apsc. But in the same or close generations, I think no Apsc could be better than a ff in term of iso. I have test low light capability of the A6500 vs the old Canon 6D and the 6D easy blow a6500 out of water in term of keeping details at high iso, at least 1,5 stops better. Yes, the newer apsc could be better in a lot of terms, but not at high iso. Because this is what full frame was born for. ;)
One of my friend wants to buy either of these cameras. Currently they both are available for almost the same price. His need is travel shooting, kids and parties.
I have a question : 1.how to get very good lo light and night photo in the Sony without Grain? 2. Can you do a video of the best setting for photography and filming in the Sony?pls
so the crop Sensor in A6400 is Better than a Fullframe Canon RP Sensor? and has better image Quality? i thought the bigger sensor the better image and has better Dynamic range?
Hi. There are a lot of elements in play here, other than sensor size. Too much to discuss in a comment, but if all things were equal, a larger sensor would be better, but all things are not equal in this case. I'll do a video about it to explain.

Always enjoy your reviews. They are clear and informative. The review is not 3 year old but still worth watching. I use my RP with the EF-EFS adapter so that I can use my Canon DSLR lenses. I did purchase the 24-195 kit lens and the 16mm lens. When using EFS lenses I get a vignette but if i use the crop setting in the RP it goes away. The one critique I have of the video is when you and many others use the profile shot and do not look at the camera! I have heard that it is to avoid viewer fatique. But in my view it is rude and I call it the rude profile. I think it is rude because if me and you were talking you would not look away. I know, it is some kind of filming technique but that does not make it right. I would presume a really progressive videographer would include a shoot of the back of the head! Why not? Aside from that vent, good video.
good day Sir, i do not know if you remember me but you helped me buy my first camera; the sl2 back in 2019 and now i am looking to buy another one but this time i am thinking the RP or the R. You did not let me down the last time and you did not now so thank you for the video and i will let you know when i buy my RP
I’m torn between the a6400, a6600 , and eos rp. My primary uses are for portrait, nature photography, and occasional vlogging. I love the versatility of lense options for Sony vs canon. What is important to me is low light shooting, battery life, ease of use, versatility with different lense options, and compact size for travel. Help...please☺️
Listen from some one who has a Sony a6400; go for the Canon RP. I love my a6400 but its primarily for video features. I'm still going to buy the Canon RP because of Canon color science which I miss when it comes to photography.
Are you going to take another look at the RP since the release of the 1.4 firmware update? I’m hearing good things and it’s making me consider it over the a6400 and even the a7iii.
I got RP, with firmware updates it’s getting stronger for sure...the latest firmware is now 1.5.0 (in case you haven’t downloaded (only if you got rp 👍)
It was an easy choice for me. I moved from Canon to Sony and have a wide compliment of Sony glass now. I have two a7II bodies and an a7III. I wanted something smaller for video so I grabbed an a6400. The camera is amazing and I’m so glad I got it. I would guess if you are still in the Canon camp the RP would make more sense. Either way they are both very useable cameras.
That's a serious lineup you've got Joe. I have only briefly used the a7ii but love my a7iii. Now I feel like I have exactly what I want for every job. Sometimes it's the a6400, sometimes it's the a7iii.
Sold RP + 35mm after 1 day and bought a6400 because of AF, image detail and zoom on MF. Feel like fullframe sensor on RP is not working as expected. I see much aliasing on zoom in and not sharp and not detail ( compared with a7ii )
Using the version 2 firmware on the a6400, there is also a simple time-lapse in the S&Q mode, but it is limited to a 1 fps record to a 1080p result file. The advantage is that it is, well, simple. The more advanced method of recording individual frames and creating the more varied files externally is still available. I would have preferred a direct to 4K time-lapse, and I would also like a 1.5 second interval (which I have not seen on any camera, but then again I have not looked at "all of them"), but at least "it's something. . . ."
I wanted the RP but was 600 bucks short when I needed a new camera and settled for the SL3 and I don’t hate it def an upgrade from my t3 but mirrorless is the future. Great video 🤘🏻
I can totally see that. $600 buys a lot of accessories. Hopefully the SL3 serves you well and then you upgrade only when absolutely needed. Thank you for the kind words Josh!
Tech Gear Talk yeah so far it’s served me well just ordered an SL2 battery grip and hopefully it fits but that the 24mm 2.8 2 spare batteries a pack of screen protectors and polarized filter later I’m still under the price of just the body of the rp let alone the adapter lol
after watching it, its really tough. but its probably easier to vlog with the a6400 and easier to produce videos with the canon RP I'm going to start saving but I might buy the a6400 then the Eos R! because theres a use for both, they're both tools :D
@@TechGearTalk I decided a6400 and Eos R, just going to start with the a6400 or maybe the rx100 and then save up for the Eos R but it just seems over priced for what you get! its all good, I have my go pro for now (:
Great review! Considering the updates and the price drop of the Canon eos RP, would you recommend the Canon over the Sony a6400? For photography and video.
Depends on what you need. I like the 120fps in the a6400 and the lower-cost lens options (sigma f/1.4 line). But the RP is also a nice way to get into a FF camera.
You can also go with a Sony A7II which can be found at a great price. I picked one up for $700 w a kit lens (brand new) during all the holiday sales and get an A6400 for video while sharing full frame lenses for both since the Emount works for both FF and APS-C
Thanks for the excellent review. Re: Livestreaming on the RP. Will it also stop at 30 minutes even if you don't record your stream in camera? Also, if i set it to 4k when using as a webcam in meetings will it also crop and not be in full frame?
Just bought the RP + 24-105 F4L its a great improvement over the SL2 i had for a bit. For photography..i think fullframe is the way to go thus RP. the RF lense is amazing. for video both are good enough. 1080p is whats used mostly.. 4k even at cropped can be ok depends on what scenes you want. Although sony performs good, i think the colour is a bit washed out, canon wins on colour for sure.
Tech Gear Talk some portraits and some overall scenary/streets. I have 85mm and 50mm 1.8s hence why i wanted to keep going with canon. I find the RF is really easy to use and even at F4 shots are sharp all around. Im amateur, so its definitey enough for my needs.
Help me to choose my first camera. I was planning budget for a7iii. What can I choose alternate? A6400 or canon 90D? I mainly looking for photography (night) and HD video with slo-mo . I love to get nice colours as well. Because of color and ergonomics canon confusing me to go with Sony.
@@TechGearTalk yeah. Since I haven't handled any Sony camera I couldn't get conclude or convince myself to Sony. Canon gives color and ergonomics , but costs high. Can you share any raw files of a6400 and a7iii?
The only problem of the 6400 is getting wide FOV unfortunately like any crop sensor. It’s kind of important for a lot of youtubers. It’s kind of impossible to get wide and blurred on crop sensors.
Interesting. Every video I've made in the past 3 years was shot on a crop sensor. I've never felt that it's a limiting factor. Of course I understand the FF could offer a shallower DOF but with the proper lenses and technique - a crop sensor has worked well for me. Even with inexpensive lenses like: ruclips.net/video/uORT1dfeS0M/видео.html thought?
Hi thanks for the video ! i'm looking for a product photography camera (and the lens). I'm planning on getting a 100mm lens for the camera and thikning about to choose one of these two. And i'm a beginner. Which one would you suggest?
The Canon RP just killed off the APS-C sensor market over $1200. Once you try FF for photography, you will never go back. It really only leaves APS-C for vlogging and Fuji and Panasonic are stitching up that market because RUclips is about to limit file sizes for upload. $K just got too fat. The game now is 1080p/120fps.
I have a canon RP. However the RF lenses are too expensive, therefore I use my sigma 18-35 lens on the RP. But when I put on my sigma lens the megapixel & resolution takes 1.6 crop (according to the camera.) Does that really change the image quality & make that combo not usable? Because my 80D & M6 Mark ii both have better resolution and Megapixel than the RP & Sigma Combo. Please help me
I’m going to take a lot more photos but want to be able to vlog or shoot b-roll if we go on a trip, and I don’t know which to choose. A lot more photos of, nature, street, and automotive. And have good video capabilities when I need them
Great video. Thanks. I still use my A6000 with a couple of Sigma primes. I don't go above ISO 1600 on the A6000. Lot of noise and reduction in sharpness. I crop a lot before posting on social media. Is the A6400 a decent upgrade over the A6000? Is it usable at ISO 3200? Thanks.
Thank you so much for the brilliant presentation and excellent teaching ability. My question is: Would the weather protection be a game changer in favor of the sony a6400?
Great review, as I’ve been tossing up between each of these cameras. I have a question about the ability of using the a6400 as a streaming camera and it being powered while in use and not relying on battery life. Can you explain to me this feature as I have read conflicting information saying that the camera will not charge/rely on external power such as through USB and that a third party dummy battery and ac adapter is needed. Thank you.
Hi. I want to buy a camera for dental photography (intra-oral), based on my budget finally i have to choose between these two options 1. Sony a6400 with FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens, 2. @@onlysublime the downside that ND adapter doesn't work with RF glass, if by any chance ND filter was built in, that would be a game changer.
"Full frame is full frame" Your comment which is completely true is also a little misleading as obviously there is a point where a Full Frame camera will be able to get a shallower DOF that the APS-C cannot match unless you can find a lens with a super small f-stop but in general if you calculate the crop factor you can get the same image, both field of view and DOF in a APS-C camera.
i.e. FF 75mm @ f2.8 produces the the same image as APS-C (1.5x crop) 50mm @ f1.8 - you would also have different ISO settings to match exposure.
this is second video I watch on this channel and again is the best I’ve seen about cameras description and information thank you very much
Thank you so much - I appreciate you being part of this community!
This is the best full detailed comparison of the a6400 and RP video I have seen. Thank you.
Excellent review. I watched your breakdown very attentively and rate it as the best I've seen. You put in a great deal of detail, and even though I don't understand all the tech terms, I am now sold on the Sony a6400. Respect!
I'm super glad it was helpful! Thank you for the kind words and for joining the community 🙏
Both cameras are good at what they're offering. I'd not consider twice as my main goal is for compactness with video priority in mind. Therefore, a6400 is my best bet.
I agree with you that they are both good. If portability is a priority, the a6400 is a great choice.
Great work mate! Very deep and detail comparison between two cameras, and without being seasoned with DRAMA and some unnecessary face expression.
Thank you so much for the feedback Randy. Thanks for being part of and supporting the channel!
Great review as always brother. I'm not gonna lie, after every review you upload, the Sony is attracting me more and more. Great work. 👍🏻👍🏻
It's a magical lure...
Thanks brother!
Thanks for the video. It is really astonishing how the Sony 6400 holds up compared to the Canon RP, with this difference in price.
I think it did quite well. The new firmware update for the RP has been meaningful (plus a price drop).
Brilliant review. You covered everything. And I can deduce that they're equally better than each other.

Glad the video was helpful in your decision-making process!

Nice analysis Christian!

Good insight Kenji
Loving my a6400... The amount of customisation is awesome.
Only con is that the lenses are REALLY expensive and the lack of bundled external charger.
Yup, you can do so much with it, it's crazy.

Just bought the a6400 over the canon rp, because of wildlife photography (focal length). Thank you for your tips!
how is a6400 handles videography?
@@sahindavidoff3098 videography is superb. Of course you need the right lenses (with stabilisation). If you don‘t like to work with tripots, you‘d be better adviced with the sony a6600, which has IBIS - just for a better performance without a tripot. Rolling shutter is there, but no factor for wildlife in my eyes.
@@TravelDigitalNomad but 6600 is a little bit expensive😂
Excellent review...informative without being preachy.
Thank you ;)
Thank you for the kind words 🙏🏻.
I’m curious, are you saying that no aps-c sensor isn’t better than any FF sensor ever?
Tech Gear Talk thank you. Some old ff sensor like the Canon 5D was not very good and maybe could be beaten by some new gen apsc. But in the same or close generations, I think no Apsc could be better than a ff in term of iso. I have test low light capability of the A6500 vs the old Canon 6D and the 6D easy blow a6500 out of water in term of keeping details at high iso, at least 1,5 stops better. Yes, the newer apsc could be better in a lot of terms, but not at high iso. Because this is what full frame was born for. ;)
I'm glad I followed up. Thank you again for all the support and for taking the time to share your insight!
One of my friend wants to buy either of these cameras. Currently they both are available for almost the same price. His need is travel shooting, kids and parties.

I had canon from the past but got lucky with the Amazon glitch so now I'm a Sony user also.
Oahu Mike the E-Mount on their fullframe and apsc is really convincing.
Even the A7’s a fullframe, the body is so much smaller than the other brands.

so the crop Sensor in A6400 is Better than a Fullframe Canon RP Sensor? and has better image Quality? i thought the bigger sensor the better image and has better Dynamic range?
Hi. There are a lot of elements in play here, other than sensor size. Too much to discuss in a comment, but if all things were equal, a larger sensor would be better, but all things are not equal in this case. I'll do a video about it to explain.

What’s the best for using a CamLink to record via Final Cut?

It's a much better option and value now - I wouldn't think twice if you like the feature set.
I got RP, with firmware updates it’s getting stronger for sure...the latest firmware is now 1.5.0 (in case you haven’t downloaded (only if you got rp 👍)
Another great review. Thanks Tech Gear
Thank you for the kind words and support as always 🙏
Of this two cameras, which do you consider for going on adventures and taking graduation pictures?
Both would do great. Sony is smaller and lighter
I would have preferred a direct to 4K time-lapse, and I would also like a 1.5 second interval (which I have not seen on any camera, but then again I have not looked at "all of them"), but at least "it's something. . . ."
Really good & detailed review!
Thank you so much for the kind words and support 🙏

I can totally see that. $600 buys a lot of accessories. Hopefully the SL3 serves you well and then you upgrade only when absolutely needed. Thank you for the kind words Josh!
Tech Gear Talk yeah so far it’s served me well just ordered an SL2 battery grip and hopefully it fits but that the 24mm 2.8 2 spare batteries a pack of screen protectors and polarized filter later I’m still under the price of just the body of the rp let alone the adapter lol

Amazing video, loved it
Great review!
I take photos mainly of family and some minor video. Between Sony A6400 and Canon RP which do you think is better choice. Thanks
If it were me, I would go with the RP because I prefer Canon skin tones in jpeg
Thanks much appreciated

Thanks for the excellent review. Re: Livestreaming on the RP. Will it also stop at 30 minutes even if you don't record your stream in camera? Also, if i set it to 4k when using as a webcam in meetings will it also crop and not be in full frame?
the rp will not stop when livestream at 30min.. livestream does not support 4k on any flatform.. max quality 1080p
CONGRATS!!! That is such a nice camera. The RF lenses are incredible. What do you normally shoot?
Tech Gear Talk some portraits and some overall scenary/streets. I have 85mm and 50mm 1.8s hence why i wanted to keep going with canon. I find the RF is really easy to use and even at F4 shots are sharp all around. Im amateur, so its definitey enough for my needs.

if you want slow motion and low light performance, sounds like you want to go with the Sony
Which camara is best for wedding photography and out door shoot canon rp or sony a6400....?
The Canon RP just killed off the APS-C sensor market over $1200. Once you try FF for photography, you will never go back. It really only leaves APS-C for vlogging and Fuji and Panasonic are stitching up that market because RUclips is about to limit file sizes for upload. $K just got too fat. The game now is 1080p/120fps.
This channel has every info I need.. Thanks for the hardwork.. Which of the 2 camera would u go for street photography ?
I have a canon RP. However the RF lenses are too expensive, therefore I use my sigma 18-35 lens on the RP. But when I put on my sigma lens the megapixel & resolution takes 1.6 crop (according to the camera.) Does that really change the image quality & make that combo not usable? Because my 80D & M6 Mark ii both have better resolution and Megapixel than the RP & Sigma Combo. Please help me
