I bought one yesterday cause my car was idling crazy and running rich and couldn't figure out what it was. I seriously didn't think this would actually help but it pulled the code for the mass air being low voltage. So figured why not give it a shot I bought a new mass air and dam that was the problem so this thing for being old technology actually worked.
I'm about to get in because I've had it with replacing random sensors thinking my car (now secondary car) is running lean and has a rough idle start after warmed up. No CEL but I've done the memory key on test and I get a bunch of random codes
Great video,Man i just saw a video where someone was counting flashes, my word,this scanner you have which i have also is so cheap and its worth its weight in gold why would anyone be counting flashes in 2023 is beyond me? cant stress enough how many times this scanner has helped me and as much as these cars have idle problems you almost need to keep it in the glovebox,lol, ive had my scanner for about 13 years or so,maybe longer and the book it comes with it also gives you all the problem codes like you show here, win win.
You can also jump the 2 cables together and do a KOER and KOEO test by watching the check engine light flash. It's a pretty cool system Ford had for people to grab codes without an OBD1 tester. Thought people might want to know that

If you get codes saying oxygen sensor running rich, replace the MAP sensor. If you get vacuum at the EGR at idle, replace the charcoal canister purge valve. If the timing mark flutters, it's the module. Actron has a tester CP 9690 that works on OBDI. It has code connect for troubleshooting solutions.
Get a Actron CP9690 code tester. It works on OBDI and OBDII. It has cables for OBDI for Ford, G.M., Chrysler, and Toyota. It has a OBDII cable. It has code-connect to diagnose codes. It comes in a black pouch. It's well-lit! 2000 up is automatic test. Below, you dial in the vehicle. It lists codes and definition. Different codes pertain to different years. A CP9680 is for OBDII only. It's the same tester. Without having to thumb thru pages, it shows the definition. If you get improper vacuum to the EGR, replace the charcoal canister purge valve. If you get rich oxygen sensor codes, replace the MAP sensor. But, it could have other causes for rich mixture. It checks KOEO and KOER codes. It checks timing advance. Memory codes can be erased. Those are problems in the recent past. Sometimes replacing one part erases other codes relating to that code. After replacing parts, recheck codes. Warm the engine to 2000 RPM's for 2 minutes or until the upper hose is warm and retest. On OBDII, open loop is warming up. Closed loop is warmed up. Negative fuel trims are lean mixture on OBDII.
I bought one of these scanners 4 years ago when i had my 94 gt,i sold the 94 since but getting a fox next week do this will come in handy once again :). I paid 20 bux on amazon btw.
I stumbled on to this video somehow again. My code reader does not work on my 87 mustang gt for some odd reason. I know my car used to be an auto and swapped to a 5speed with a a9L computer. Im wondering if that cable is even connected at the other end which im gonna check eventually.

Damn that's good info. I need this because my 93 Cobra will die with the check engine light on and it will only start if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it. So basically I have to reset the ecm to start it. Can't figure out why it keeps dying and while it runs there's no check engine light.
Mine from back then came with a cord to plug it inside under the dash , You could do the way you’re doing it if you don’t have the cord but didn’t know they didn’t come with the cord anymore
Thanks for the video great info, I'm bought the same scanner I need to pull the codes on my supercharged 90 vert. The car wants shut off when the clutch pedal is depressed. I'm thinking the vss sensor or neutral sensing sensor. Because this car was orginally an automatic I converted to a stick.

Does it ever pick up codes without any dash lights glowing? My 5.8 in my e350 is running like crap at wide open throttle but I don't have any dash lights (besides the ABS light)
Not all problems with throw a CEL. See you mentioned ABS Light, you might have a obd2 ecu. This scanning tool in this video for obd1. Most autoparts stores will pull codes for you. Good Luck!

@@justin91lx It's weird. By no way am I saying you're wrong. It could be one of those oddball quirks, or the previous owner could have removed it for some unknown reason. Mine is a 1996 and was built in June at the Lorain, Ohio plant. Anyway, some might it and some don't. I have looked for the port myself and I can't find it even after I took it to AutoZone and Advance. Thank you for the reply and take care. Peace
Have you tried looking for a small black box in the engine bay called "Diagnosis" .don't know if your car has that but I have a Ford couldn't find a OBD1 OR OBD2 PORT so I went searching around the engine and found that Black Mini/small box called Diagnosis don't know if this will help. Search up 16 pin adpater on RUclips and some videos will pop up of what I'm talking about
My 91 gt turns over no start hooked my scanner up and it does nothing so I put it on my 94 f150 scanner works put on my mustang does nothing any ideal’s what might be going on do think my ecu bad thanks
@@Goodyboi code 11 is pretty important, that tells you your computer is ok. If you can't figure it out and you can't get code 11 to come up maybe check the computer ground on the driver's side fender apron near the starter solenoid.
@@justin91lx yeah I'll have to do that because I got the scanner and with the engine off test I got code 10 and 20 which would only come up in a cylinder power balance test
@@justin91lx I think it's either the cheap distributor I just put in it or maybe injectors if those codes are accurate because I just did plugs and wires about 10,000 miles ago

Get the manuals. It uses VIN digits to identify the engine and year to test. The thumbwheel can be used to increase RPM'S for charging and air- conditioning tests. It can also check the tach on the dash. EBAY has it.
Ok don't mean to sound like a dumb ass but when you to code read on it should come up with 000 correct when you turn on or do the battery on the truck power the reader

Code 11 is the pass code for system pass. Code 10 is the separator code. Maybe you're not getting a memory code which a pass code would be 11. Retest it with the engine warm.

Some vehicles had OBD 2 before 1996. For example: all 94-95 V6 Mustangs actually came with OBD 2.

Run fuel injector cleaner thru the engine to clean the injectors and valves and to prevent false codes.

justin91lx I actually bought a scan tool today. I pulled a 14,15 and 16 code KOEO then an 11 with engine on.

Hide it. Its only good for to check codes. If you have a aftermarket ecu you wont use it at all

It does not. Only way is to unplug the battery
You have to fix the problem to cut the light off.

Well this explains why O'Reilly Auto couldn't get a code off of it. Didn't connect both plugs!

No. Just unplug battery to clear codes
Mine just keeps throwing a 00 code
Check the fuses. See if the battery has been disconnected for awhile erasing the memory.
