  • On this episode I show you how to scan your car for check engine codes. Ford Motor Company introduced computer controlled cars in various models as early as 1981. In doing so, they also introduced what is know as the OBD1 system for reading, diagnosing, and understanding what is going on with the various components of your computer controlled car. In this video, I show you how to test you car for both key on engine off codes, as well as continuous memory codes. There is another test you can run called the key on engine running test as well.

      I have heard the older ones are the best (better built quality), i got mine like 10 years ago,what happens with the new ones is the brass colored pins that connect to the car have a tendency to come apart from the scanners board when you remove the diagnostic plugs,i like mine alot too,it works great.

    I just subscribed. Thank you for all of your foxbody content, it sure helps me a lot. I have a 1991 lx hatch with aluminum heads, cobra intake, equal length shorty headers and stock cam. Runs great with no check engine light until it’s at wot and goes out a couple seconds after I let off the gas pedal. I will definitely be purchasing one of these code readers. Thanks again. All the best.

    Such a great video Kasl! And just in time my friend. Needed to watch this as my ‘93 Cobra for some reason started flashing the check engine light. On and off thru gears… weird. Never before until after a weekend drive recently. But I bought this lil OBD1 scanner and this vid is perfect! Here’s hoping for a successful trouble shooting sesh! 👍🏼

    Got an obd1 reader for my 1994 mustang gt, but funny thing is the 94-95 mustangs gts were obd1, but also had obd2 ports that weren't plugged in to anything, interesting quirk

      From what I've read they were in the process of converting to OBD2's and some early cars didn't get them, the harness had the plug but it wasn't used, etc

    Not necessary to remove the assembly from the shock tower. Pull from the cover from the bottom, grasping the wire loom. Mine is a 1993 Ford Ranger.

    Good video. My 88 does not have the separate one wire plug. The one white wire with red stripe is in the bigger tester plug. I'm going to see if I can get the wire out and so I can get it on the OBD1 reader to do the test.

    With that set up there is also a cylinder balance test that can be done with the engine running. It will basically tell you the health of the engine. One by one it will stop each fuel injector for each cylinder. Takes just a couple minutes to do. The instructions are in the manual 👍🏻

      @KASLCustoms  Год назад

      No I don’t and in all honesty, it hasn’t even had an alignment since it was built in 1992 😂. It rides really good and I do not have any odd ball tire wear to report. I could use a bump steer kit but it’s been lowered since 1999 so I guess I’m just used to the way it “handles” and tracks
