Apparently Martin Luther King Jr was in the crowd for this performance and was weeping the whole time. Frank stood up against racism and was very vocal against it. Love him
In 1967 Frank Sinatra sang this song at a special fundraiser for the NAACP at Carnegie Hall. Dr. King was in attendance and Sinatra’s interpretation of this song moved Dr. King to tears. You should look this up. It was very moving.
For a New York born Italian American his soul Understood and empathised with the plight of African Americans and their history of slavery. This rendition of this song is wonderful and Frank's voice was amazing.
I was alive to hear Sinatra at his peak, 1960-70. I am moved that a young man such as yourself can appreciate Sinatra's talent. Like the vid & following you.

Thanks so much for loving Frank, the best there ever was. There's so much I could tell you about this man who helped so many people, did so much to try to bring equality to all people, and so much more. Brought a new way of singing and delivering a song, brought a depth and personal emotion to his music and acting, check out The Man With the Golden Arm. A man who truly enjoyed life and brought joy to so many others. Keep delving into Frank Sinatra.
Of course I could tell you about all the women and whatever but, as is usually the case, that brought as much pain as pleasure to him and he is not afraid, as most are, to let his raw feelings be there for all to see in his music. Thanks for spreading the word

Your reaction is awesome. You really got into the song and performance. You really appreciate Sinatra's great talent. I saw Sinatra twice live in concert. Once in 1978 at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey and once in 1980 in Atlantic City New Jersey with Dean Martin. Needless to say, both shows were fun fabulous and exciting. Those are great memories I will always treasure.

I totally understand what you are saying! When I was a child, my Father had a big band and the musicians would be rehearsing in the house when I was about 3 years old, I heard Frank Sinatra for the first time, I couldn't stop listening! Among all the others, I love the ballads, especially from his albums "Sinatra & Strings" "September O My Years" I sang these songs growing up during the 50's 60 and so forth. Every album Sinatra came out with I couldn't put them down! I sang in my dads bands from 7 years old onward and believe me, I know what you mean by saying I wish I was in the day of Sinatra, I kept telling my dad, "I'm in the wrong era!" I am so thrilled I was able to grow up in the right era with all the great music from the 50's up even till today to appreciate what Sinatra and his talent was all about! I was a teen idol in the 70's but went back to my roots later in life and who knew but GOD himself let me fulfill a dream of a lifetime! For the past 25 years I have successfully established a career of representing Frank Sinatra worldwide as a Sinatra Tribute Artist meeting many of his wonderful friends, known and unknown, his family and reliving that Rat Pack era. Sinatra is still in demand and It is AWESOME to hear your appreciation. ALL THE BEST!

This is such a good song! The first time I heard Mr. Sinatra sing it I cried! If you have not watched him with Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. on a Vegas stage you need to see it! There collection called The Ultimate Rat Pack collection that you can get for cheap on ebay. It's has a ton of songs by each individual and it also as a great recording of the three of them with Johnny Carson in St. Louis and it's just a great watch! They are hilarious and they just make you smile every time you see it!
Song from the musical Showboat, by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. which premiered in 1927. There are also two movie versions of it. Lots of other great tunes in the show.
I find it so delightful that you like Frank Sinatra so much! I am 69 and I thought of his music as "old fashioned" when I was growing up and here you are a young man enjoying his music! Except for a few songs, I never really cared for his music but watching it with you - when you clearly love him - has made it fun for me!

This is when he had his own TV show. Because he had sung with just about everyone in nightclubs and movies, he could have anyone on his show, and he did. All of the big singers from all genres had a TV show: Glen Campbell, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Frank, the Smothers Brothers, Judy Garland, Jim Babies, etc. Watch videos of him when he was the front man for the Tommy Dorsey Band from the 40's and check out clips from his movies.
There's a version from the 40s from an MGM movie that is beyond AMAZING!!
Listen also to the Sammy Davis Jr rendition. This was played a funeral of the brother of a friend. A different rendition, not Sinatras. It brought everyone to tears...so classic. Thank-you for your comments of this classic iconic song

I first heard Frank sing this song in the movie "TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY". It was HORRIBLE!!!!!!
This is the first time I've heard this version and it is a major improvement. Frank's voice had deepened and you can see and hear his life experience in it.
This is not a song for a young singer and it is best sung by a baritone.
I do get a kick at hearing it sung by a white singer as it is about slavery; that is a ironic kick. In saying this the song seems to represent all people in the workforce. I have felt powerless on more than one occasion and that is what this song represents to me.

You can watch lots of videos of Frank in movies back in the day and watch him sing and dance!
Frank was truly an American hero, in the early 60s there were night clubs that would not allow black people in the bar or restaurant area. It has been documented that on numerous occasions Frank told club owners that Sammy Davis Jr would eat/drink with Frank at his table or else and Frank had the connections to shut down any club from NY to LA. Needless to say it still took GUTS for Frank to stand up for what was right !

In the 1930s, My grand parents fled Italy under Mussolini, came to America. Five boys and two girls.They landed in NJ and settled in Hoboken, NJ....Nobody would hire them nor rent to them. My grandfather met with the landlord who refused to rent to them and so he offered to buy one of his buildings. The landlord sold him the building for $ 3500, in the 1930s. So when his family moved in to their new home, guess who was living next door ? Old Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra.
