As a wheelchair user myself, I've always viewed Nessa as kind of a tragic character. She resents but also benefits from people coddling her and when she finally gets the independence she craves, she does not have the maturity to handle it, precisely because she was coddled.
It's really fitting how 'No One Mourns the Wicked" plays when it's revealed the Governor died. The man force-fed his pregnant wife toxic flowers that ended up killing her and crippled his youngest daughter for life, and put all the blame on his oldest, simply because he didn't want another green kid. He didn't even know Elphaba was an affair baby, he simply hated her for a "disfigurement" she had no control of, and when compared to the other weird shit in Oz (Magic and talking animals), isn't even that bad. Honestly if he was always like this, then it's no wonder his wife cheated on him. No one mourns the wicked, indeed...
I could be WAY off, but didn't he guinely love his wife and Nessa? It's quite possible that he, like many in Oz, had a rather fragile sense of morality and a strict sense of conformity, thus why he despised Elphaba (since he couldn't "fix" her to fit society) and obsessed with making sure Nessa didn't end up like her. Not saying he was right, but in Ozian mentality, he wasn't wrong. I wonder how they would've incorporated Shell in the musical, tbh. Given how the major characters are made more liekable in the musical, I wonder if they'd still make him a troublemaker, or if he'd be written as the golden child simply to contrast with the "Wicked" Elphaba and "pitiful" Nessarose.
@paige4480 Probably because there aren't any major quadlings in the story, so they just removed it from the play to save time--and probably emphasis Elphaba's uniqueness (the message of "oh, you're different" falls flat if others are, too). They also removed her allergy to water, which is probably due to the fact that she fakes her death in the musical.
From what I've read, there was apparently too much dialogue that couldn't be cut and they were worried it would give away too much of the story. Which is a shame, because both the acting and the vocals are just too damn good!
Okay, so I'm not crazy! I saw the at back in line 2007, bought the cast recording in 2009 and it wasn't on there so I assumed I imagined it but also knew I *absolutely didnt.* So glad I found this finally
There is so much about this performance that is perfect. The shady delayed “Madam.” Deedee basically rolling her ankles with every step like the slippers are controlling her steps and she has to balance herself, Carmen’s look of exasperation when Nessa fucks up. And Deedee is the only Nessa I’ve seen who’s actually screamed in horror when seeing Boq transformed. That desperate “It was ELPHABA” was everything. Just a perfect scene.

I think something about Nessa’s character thats often overlooked is that she has no one. Nobody truly cares for her. Her father died, Boq literally only stays with her out of obligation, and she can’t get her older sister who she grew up having care for her to stay around her for more than literally the span of this song. Boq is now the only person she has left, and if he knew the reality of what happened he’d despise her more than he already does. She spent her entire life only ever having people feel bad for her, because no one ever saw past her disability. All she wants is someone to love her for who she is, and in the end she doesn’t get that. Even after she’s dead, all she receives is pity.
@@Roadent1241it’s not that Elphaba doesn’t care. But when he says no in Dancing Through Life, that is his honest answer because he didn't asked her because he felt sorry for her, he asked her because Glinda told him to. He changes his mind and decides to lie in the next line when he says "because you are so beautiful" so his answer to the question never would've been yes
@@randomusername3388 True, I was thinking of the original Broadway version where he never says he doesn’t feel sorry for her. Something I really love about Deedee's Nessa is that she actually embodies naivety and childish innocence. A lot of the other performances I've seen show her to already be tyrannical and cold, like she's already accepted that she's evil and Boq doesn't love her, and there's not much of a range of emotion in this scene when Boq reveals everything. Dede your wicked witch of the east is the most compelling rendition I’ve ever seen!! your articulation of every word the desperation and anger in your voice with elphaba from the moment she stepped in to once the spell had been cast & the regret that washes over her the acceptance of her title is so gratifying & it makes every scene so powerful. She was definitely coddled in her younger years she depended so on others and yet she eventually has to face the big bad world as a lone solder I am an Ozian historian & you gave such an awesome presence & resemblance to the character not only literally in physical form but figuratively as well. Such a good actress!!! Period sis you did your job & job well done I say 😚❤️🩹✨
What a little liar... "It was Elphaba". Nope, it was you. It was you who didn't see he wasn't in love and decided to keep lying to yourself and then tried a spell to force him to be with you regardless of his wishes. And it was also the lying little bastard who weren't Munchkin enough to tell you he wasn't in love. Elphaba has nothing to do with all this.
Exactly. Elphaba only did what needed to be done to fix the mess that Nessa selfishly created. Elphaba only ever tried to help others, but she was blamed for what happened to Boq, & everything else that went wrong in Oz because of the Wizards cruelty thanks to everyone's prejudice towards her for being green skinned.
Also I like how Elphaba doesn’t include Boq in her list of people she accidentally harmed with good intentions or couldn’t save in No Good Deed 😂 she’s like, nope, not taking the blame for that one
Wow, I remember DeeDee when she was on the Mickey Mouse Club and a member of The Party, alongside her fellow Mousketeers, including the late great Tiffani Hale (RIP 😢). It's great to see her career coming to full fruition and getting the praise and accolades that she earned and deserved.
I remember her from the MMC / The Party also. But she’s been doing musical theater and voiceover work since 1995. Just because Wicked is popular again at this moment, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had a full career.
@TSV805 I know. I remember that she played Kim in Miss Saigon when it debuted in St. Louis. I am just acknowledging her early start and her lucrative and very successful career.
Steven Universe is why I got into Wicked in 2016.
One of the most tragic characters in all of broadway history that nessa is
I'm so glad this this video is on youtube. This is, in my opinion, the goated Nessarose performance.
Deedee is a phenomenal Nessa. Might be my favorite ❤️🤍🖤
My heart, it’s shrinking…
I always forget deedee was in Wicked
Oh wow the algorithm really wanted me to watch this perfect cast today
Who knew Deedee was incredible way back with The Party ❤
Round and round
She’s been blaming Elphaba for everything wrong her whole life, just like Frex taught her to
Also I like how Elphaba doesn’t include Boq in her list of people she accidentally harmed with good intentions or couldn’t save in No Good Deed 😂 she’s like, nope, not taking the blame for that one
She’s amazing
She also was in Sister Act II
Sister Act II is my life
SHE’S THE BEST
Her voice and acting is wonderful
One of the best Nessa's I've seen. Deedee is impresive!
CHILLS EVERY TIME!!
They said take five but deedee heard change lives
She’s so underrated and MAGNIFICENT
I cannot wait to see this in the movie next!! As for spoilers, March of the witch hunters spoils boq becoming the tin man
wow they are SO good!!!
She’s the best I’ve ever seen
I never knew miss magno hall was nessarose!!! I know her as pearl and she was very sweet when I met her in 2019!
This scene is incredible
Jeez why am I emotional😂 this is amazingly well done👏🏻
From what I’ve seen so far, most of us have seemed to have forgot that Deedee was also the voice actress for Pearl from Steven Universe
Steven Universe is why I got into Wicked in 2016. After becoming so fond of the voice artists for the SU characters, I explored their other works, at least two of which included Wicked (Deedee Magno Hall in the musical itself and Jennifer Paz with a recorded version of "For Good.") I certainly have not forgotten 🙂
most of the comments are about her being Pearl haha
Whoa. That was amazing.
After watching SU I wish I got to see Deedee on Broadway
I saw her as Nessarose while she was a part of the tour, she was great.
oh deedee magno hall the performer you are 💕
HOW DID I NOT KNOW PEARL WAS IN WICKED HELLO???
Nothing can top this I fear
DeeDee is amazing!)
That is the best Nessa I have ever seen!
Does anyone else notice he says "What is it? What's wrong?" Just like Elphaba's dad does when she's born
Just another reason for me to love Deedee. First Pearl, then Nessa❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
16 years ago, in Pittsburgh, PA she was my Nessa, her husband was our Fiyero. I was working merch and she was a Pearl even then ❤
I love the fact that Steven Universe cast musical theatre actors. 🥰
Sardonyx apparently was also Elphaba
Deedee's husband was Fiyero
patti lupone as YD ‼️‼️
@@a24kcals
you mean as Eva Peron Duarte
also Christine Ebersole as Baroness de Ghent
Pearl’s life after leaving the Crystal Gems took a turn for the worse.
Omg I've loved Dee Dee since her old Mickey Mouse Club days
Wow. She's incredible, Deedee is just such an amazing actress. Hearing her here is so amazing.
YESSSS PEARRLLLLLLL
Literally no words. Perfection.
first! one of my favourite nessa’s 😍
She’s the first Nessa I saw live !
Omgggggg pearllll
