Rocks aren't boring I love them! (Then again, I am a geophysicist). Learning to draw so I can get better at field sketches. These videos are really useful.
Erasing the line work helps to minimalism outlines which helps to give the overall drawing a more life like look. Most objects in real life don't have outlines. We do that naturally when we draw just to solve the issue of creating a 3d object on a 2d plane.
Yeah I went for something a little bit different with this one just to see how it would go over. Ill have to keep an eye on it to see how it does compared to other videos.
Thank you! You immediately addressed my rock drawing blind spot: to make them 3 dimensional. Duh! After filling sketch books of only 3 dimensional shaded shapes, I don't know why this didn't occur to me.
I have a tutorial that I did a while back on cliffs. And no I don't have a book although I have thought about how cool it would be to make one. Maybe someday :)
i believe it is for the "real life" look. if there is a dark line separating the light and dark shades then the object could look more flat than real and dimensional. For example, to make a sphere (for lack of a better shape) you need to blend the light and dark shades together or else it will look flat.
I took a few classes in college but they didn't teach me how to draw. I have been drawing long before college. It did help me a bit but with my technique I wasn't impressed by what they had and I never perused a degree in it. I have been teaching myself everything I know for the last 3 years of running the channel and I learned a lot more from that then what I did from the classes. Not saying that college fine art is bad, it just didn't spark my interest.
Sunsets can be more on the difficult side. I do have a drawing that I did of a hawaiian sunset on my channel that I did a little while back. check that one out and see if it gives you a few ideas :)
Love your videos Tyler thanks for putting time into making them. I have a question on your rock drawing and that is where was your light source coming from?
okay uh i need help so for a school project i need to paint a sun on water effect sort of like when the sun goes down you know. well i was wondering if you could make a tut on this it would really help
Hi there! :-) Great video and most educational too! This really helped me out and Now I can find my rockshapes much easier than before! 3 Greetings from Sweden! //Anette Douglasdotter
I'd say do both! Do an under-drawing and shade occasionally, then fill in some hard details on top. You may have problems with that, though, if you're using graphite instead of charcoal (graphite being slippery). Rocks are complicated and have both finely textured features as well as larger, geometric ones.

Thanks for this! Rocks are an important component in landscape drawings, and I'm never able to draw them, so this really helped!
i loved the amount of times that the word "Rak" was said in this video. Also the reference rectangle cracked me up.

I surprisingly don't. The only one I have is called how to blend oil pastels. I use them and demo how to draw a wave.
Thanks great tut, it was very helpful the way you broke it down into simpler steps. :)

Should you blend the shades or leave the original pencil's textures?
