- President Donald Trump will present the Medal of Honor on Tuesday to former Army Staff Sgt. David G. Bellavia for his actions as a squad leader in Fallujah, making him the first living Iraq War veteran to receive the recognition.
During Operation Phantom Fury in 2004, Bellavia's platoon was pinned down while clearing a block of houses. Bellavia then exchanged his M16 rifle for an M249 Squad Automatic Weapon and entered the house where his squad was trapped to provide cover fire so the soldiers could exit safely, the White House said.
"A Bradley Fighting Vehicle arrived to help suppress the enemy, but it could not fire directly into the house," it added in a statement. "Then-Staff Sergeant Bellavia re-entered the house... and assaulted insurgents who were firing rocket-propelled grenades."
There, he engaged five different fighters, pursuing them through the house until the threat was neutralized.

I was combat support for the U.S. Army. 03 Jun-13 May; 406th CSSB. Didn't burn too much brass nor barrels for Uncle Sam/Lady Liberty but was part of a battalion who were detached to "fun-filled areas."

I bet no one even appreciates what they are doing." It takes real guts to face the boogey man anytime, anywhere, let alone at night in a foreign land! I remember that also. They had the casualties reported every hour and we were crushing the Mohammad Baqir al-Sadr brigade.

I came from a military family. My father was in war 2 my uncle was in war 1 my grandson has been in the National GUARD for 5 yrs and has now went Active Military again for 5 more years

His actions were in part caught on video by an australian dude it is in the documentary Only The Dead. I saw it when I came out and I was like damn this dude deserves a medal of honor, you can watch it on Netflix and Prime Video
Find the trailer for that film - that "dude" is Michael Ware - remember seeing him televised when I was younger and couldn't believe the situations he got in to - he seemed a bit crazy but who wouldn't be after all he had seen. ABC national TV used to air this kind of stuff but now gone all lefty with PC agendas. MW makes the MSM look like pussies.

I listen to Mr. Bellavia on a radio talk show driving home from work. I knew he served but never once, for the several YEARS I've been listening, did he ever mention this heroic act. He is quick to recognize the honor in others, never placed himself on a pedestal. True class.

Our military is filled with many heros like this that willingly go into harms way to protect their fellow soldiers! Most will tell you they were scared as hell but pushed through and did what was necessary! Most never get recognized but just like SSG Bellavia they didn't do it for the recognition. They'll also tell you that they wear the MOH to represent for all the others that also deserve it but are no longer alive. Well done, NCOs leading the way by example!

I remember going through Ft. Benning for Basic, Infantry School, and Airborne. The symbol of the Infantryman was the Iron Mike statue at Infantry Hall near Airborne School. The motto of the Infantry School is FOLLOW ME! SSG. David Bellavia exemplified that Infantry squad leader not only leading them into battle but saving them from harm. This is the display of love and loyalty to his soldiers under him. Because his soldiers would have done the same for him as he would for them. This is the respect that Infantrymen will have for each other in combat. The Infantry. The Queen of Battles. We are the men and soldiers that protect our nation the United States of America. True respect for this NCO! The epitome of a combat leader! He was molded and formed at Ft. Benning's Infantry Basic and Infantry School to include his NCO courses. His character and soul made him to be what he is....
