- Sultans of Swing, if it were played by Elvis
So, since the last song I did with Stijn Bloemhof (Hotel California in the style of Johnny Cash) was pretty well received, we decided to go for another little collaboration.
We transposed the song to Am, to fit the vocals better. Added some drum breaks here and there and some backing vocals.
Had to hold back a little on the guitar playing, since the rock and rolls licks of those times weren't as flashy yet as Mark Knopfler's in 1978. But still, plenty of pentatonic licks and double stops to go around. Played my ES-335 for this one, with a slapback delay and a touch of reverb.
Hope you enjoy!

In the 1950's that song would have blown everything else out of the water. Excellent job.
It would have been the classic that Dire Straits covered..
Indeed
Absolutely with out a doubt. It would have been a worldwide over night success and would have propelled the king beyond the stratosphere.
If you think that it clearly shows you know nothing about 50's rock'n'roll. It's a great song and a clever one too but early rock'n'roll was not about being 'clever'. In many ways it was a simplified form of music. It was raw, primitive and basic and that was it's appeal. Stripped down lyrics that seemed not to make sense, stripped down musical forms from rhythm and blues and country. 50's rock'n'roll was already revolutionary and 'blowing everything out the water', it doesn't need a time travelling Dire Straits cover to help it. Sultans of Swing is a great song but would have been lost at that time. It's a song of it's own time. It's perfect for when it appeared.
Elvis has a daytime job, he’s doing quite alright. Thank you very much (in Elvis’ voice)
Gold 🎉🎉🎉
Feels like an alternate history where Elvis ditches Parker and goes into to rehab at the end of the 70's and this is his 80's comeback single to cash in on the Rockabilly revival.
Sounds like Mark Knopfler and The Stray Cats had a boy together and named him Elvis after his grandfather!
Mark,Elvis and The Stray Cats are the shiznik
that sums it up perfectly .
😂😂😂
Perfect summary!👍🏻
Ah huh Huhh
Dude! This is genius! The twangy guitar was a hoot esp. with the little 50s flourishes you threw in. Props to the vocalist - I had no idea how they were going to interpret it. The "thank you, thank you very much" was a great touch. And as always, I appreciate the less is more approach to camera work and editing. Well done!
I bet Mark Knopfler loves this.
Elvis too.
Next: an Elvis version of "Calling Elvis".
I doubt. Mark likes musicians who make music, not computers that do it. AI is killing artists' creativity! We should be aware of this danger...
@@edogrol7482 It wasn't AI, well not the main parts (guitar and vocals). Did you not see the titles at the start or read the description?
Finally someone who actually puts the effort in and not someone who puts the song through ai and it’s Mark Knopfler with and Elvis filter on his voice
This is fantastic. Thanks Laszlo, awesome work!
Incredible job. Guitar playing, vocals, arrangement... everything's on the highest level. Congratulations! 😊
Oh wow, so freaking great! The voice, the guitar. I could totally believe early Elvis would've released this exact recording. So spot on, congratulations!
It's really great. Fascinating voice and successfull transformation.
Sultans of Swing. Elvis Presley feat. The Ventures.
This is excellent. Well done.
Now after this, I am really curious to hear, what Dire Straits's Romeo And Juliet would sound if it was recorded by Johnny Cash.
Nice idea 💡 😊
Or...' where do you think you're going "...
This! And Tunnel of Love. And we need a Johnny Cash version of Six Bladed Knife.
You are a talented bloke Laszlo. Don't know how you do it. You're playing level is through the roof.
Dear Laszlo, this not only awesome but purely genius. God bless you man. Thank you :)
I absolutely love this! Super idea and performance. Thanks for doing this.
I was skeptical when I saw the video title, but you nailed the rockabilly vibe and vocal approach. Awesome!
Just when I thought there was no good musicians anymore I come your Renditions.
And every time I'm wowed.
Your much welcomed talent is rare indeed.
Thank you very much.
👍🤠🐂
Oh dude, there’s tons of really talented musicians out there - just none on “mainstream media”
Stijn’s voice is insaneee
Brilliant! You have my respect!
This should bean album! Classics elvisified. Brilliant effort!
Well done! Adds an entire new dimension to one of my favorites. Decent Elvis impression!
Genius, love it!
Thanks once again! 😁
Straight away thought of the Stray Cats, well done.
Bravo, absolutely masterly executed. Thanks.
Simplesmente Sensacional!!!
❤❤
De Jundiaí, SP Brasil...

🤣🤣🤣 I didn't in a million years see this one coming. That's great creativity, my friend.
And I think it rocks! 👍
The King Lives!
That's some great Rockabilly.
Something I never knew that I needed until I heard it!
Awesome work!!!
Incredibile and wonderful cover. Congratulations Laszlo!
Definitely Calling Elvis with this one! Great job, man!
Laszlo is GENIUS!!!
I have been positively impressed by Mr. Buring before, but this is an all new level.
Wow.
Keep 'em coming, man!
So weird, Just couldn’t get the brain to understand it at first..!!
This could definitely be a song the King would’ve sung as the style of music is perfect of the era…. 👏 Bravo!
I'm only going to swear here because this is so awesome. This is truely effing incredible!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!! Unbelievable talent.
Fucking! Say it with your chest
This just blows my mind! How do you imagine or come up with these absolutely amazing ideas? How many times can I say you are a guitar god! Just when I think I've seen everything you just amaze me ❤ I'm gobsmacked ❤
That was great. So different. Really enjoyed it. 👏👏👏
This is awesome!🎶
Fabulous! And the voice is spot on!
Sooo gut!!!!❤
torn between wanting to immediately send to friends and needing to hear the whole thing cos its so damn good
Super legal. Surpreendente. Naqueles idos anos, tenho certeza que ficaria realmente como mostrado. Parabéns pelo vídeo. Lembrei-me de minha irmã que era fã incondicional do Elvis.
Laszlo, this is a really fine arrangement. You and Stijn captured both musical worlds wonderfully!
excelent Elvis is back !
Maravilhoso Wonderful
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🎸
Well done! You've nailed it! 😁
Lifelong Knopfler/Dire Straits fan here. This is absolutely brilliant. You just keep getting better, Laszlo.
Ficou perfeita a sonoridade, o timbre, bem anos 50
I’m excited for this one❤
Great Job! It's Rockabilly and typical Knopfler at the same time. Awesam with the Elvis-like voice. Love it!
How I wish that Elvis is still alive, he should have witnessed the magnificent work of Laszlo Buring.
👍👍👍👍👍👍🙂🙂EXTREMELY enjoyable listening, THANKS
Incredible!
I really enjoyed that, Laszlo.
Thank you.
Vocals sometimes sound more like Johnny Cash, not that it's a bad thing. Bloody brilliant interpretation!
Actually it is more Cash than Elvis throughout the whole song.
It never occurred to me to blend Knopfler and Scotty Moore’s guitar styles but this is AWESOME 😎 Love the vocals too.
Excellently done. Seems a bit surreal as no 50’s rock song had such complex lyrics, guitar chords, or lasted more than 2:30.
Wow, Lazlo very catchy, and I could totally see Elvis singing this in my mind! Very impressive riff at the end there ...
Elvis Knopfler - Sultans in The Ghetto
Suspicious Swing
Still processing what I’ve just listened to. I thought he had left the building… Classic Laszlo, thanks! Backing vocals reminded me of Bowie’s Absolute Beginners.
Thanks!
Love this version.
Very well done, this was very very good 👍
Amaaaaaaaazing !!!! Thank you very very much for this version !! Absolutely brilliant !!
Oh man!!!, Here we go! Let's rock n' roll with the genius Laszlo K. Presley.👍👍
Love this! Wat a great idea and so well executed!
It's really amazing ❤....Masterpiece version....Thanks Laszlo!💯🎵🎶👏👏
It works! It actually works! More power to your elbow!
Wow, good afternoon Laszlo, and what can I say that hasn’t been said before about your supremely amazing talents?? This was just a perfect microcosm of what the King himself would’ve done with this song and as always, was note for note spot-on perfection!! 🎼🎤🎸🥁🎸🎹🎸
Thank you for this cover. Thank you very much.
One of the best things I've ever heard. It really adds something to the original. Would be great if you can put it on Spotify.
Thank you very much! When I've released a few more of these songs I'll put them on Spotify in an album 😁
This is fantastic! I’d love to hear Chris Isaak cover this classic.
Thanks Lazlo, this song made my day! ❤
Thank you very much!
Great interpretation of what is our (wife and myself) favourite song of all time. Love the "Thank you very much". I think Elvis would've struggled doing a song much longer than three minutes, though!!!
Thanks! I agree, that's why we decided to take 1 verse out, and still it felt quite long for a rock 'n' roll song. But we decided to just go with it 😁
This is fantastic, really digging this 😎
Really great cover
Oh hell yes!! Elvis makes everything exponentially better - that's just science.
Sounds great🎸🎸🎸🎸👍👍
Здравствуйте, Лазло! Это великолепная работа! Просто замечательная интерпретация! Спасибо! 🤝
I really hope Elvis hears this....
It blew my mind!!!
Awesome job!!!
Well done!! Bravo!
Very interesting interpretation.
Utterly brilliant!
Thank you very much!
Simply amazing how you can switch styles.
But I always love it the "usual" way round: when you do somewhat "as if written by Dire Straits". I think you imitate Knopfler's guitar style damn well. And as I love his playing so much, I can't get enough even of your remakes.
You have done it again!
Sehr sehr cool ,,great twang 🎉,,,all the best and rockin' regards 👍🎙️🎵🎶🍀
Absolutely fantastic!
WOW! Great job mate!
Brilliant cover, up there with the metal cover by Leo Moracchioli and Mary Spender.
The Sultans, finally swung. Just brilliant
Thank you, thank you very much.
This was great! Fantastic amalgam of styles!
How fun! Great rendition, now it's one more version I can't play, lol! thanks for this!
Just AMAZING, what a talent!!!
This is so cool! The guitars and vocals were crisp! Production is on point! 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks! It's mixed in the way a late 60s vinyl LP would sound 😁
@@LaszloBuring I know nothing about mixing and only a little about playing but that sounds really really good man, well done!! 💯🔥 Keep on rocking 🤘
In Black and White !! Very cool !!!
Wow this is great!
Well done
Thank you very much, that's was an important add.
Genuinely fun; great vibe.
Wow. Very good!!
