Testing ALCLAD Candy Colors - Very Nice Results !!

  • Here I test a few Alclad candy colors. I did a massive candy test video some time ago but I didn't have any Alclad at the time to be included in that test. These performed a bit different from my other candy colors and also different from other Alclads but I do like the results and I can recommend just like the other Alclad paints

    I bought two kits after seeing this. This paint is just what i needed. I was reluctant to get the Alclad despite the rage for it until I learned how easy it is to use. Thanks. Nice video

    As a Note: Gold base Red candy method is actually called Candy Apple Red and looks amazing with Ruby Red and Electric Blue. Candy Apple has been around for a very long time and most modellers aren't aware of how it's done. Candy colors over Gold chrome or gloss gold produce the Apple brand. Try the Ruby Red over the Black chrome I haven't done that yet but might look like a deep blood.

    I use the chrome over cheap Rustoleum gloss black. Not the aerosol as it gains texture as it dries, but the can paint mixed with reducer and thinned like skim milk sprays on like glass, dries fast over lacquer primer and does a great basecoat job for the chrome. Spray in many light as possible layers and the finish will really pop.

    Hello, a question: what do I dilute Alclad's candy yellow enamel paint with? When I paint either on chrome or on Bright Silver Candy, the color is yellow, red, blue, etc. I find it very intense. If I want a gold that is not so yellow, I cannot paint with a thin layer because it dulls the chrome, that is, it takes away the reflection. I have to throw more candy paint to recover the reflection but at this point I have very yellow or blue depending on the color I use.

    • @barbatosrex9473
      @barbatosrex9473  Год назад

      By dilute do you mean thinning it? If so thin it using lacquer thinner

  • @Me4king
    @Me4king 3 года назад

    Your results came out amazing. I've had some inconsistency of retaining the reflectivity (shine dulls a bit) after applying the candy coat on top of chrome. Watching your video, it looks like I probably need to spray on more coats to get the layers on evenly. I couldn't find any info from Alclad's website if I needed to clear coat the enamel candy with Aqua gloss after?

    • @barbatosrex9473
      @barbatosrex9473  3 года назад

      No need to Aqua Gloss the candy colors at all. They hardened up really well. The Aqua Gloss is o ly needed for their high shine and chrome finish.

      Alclad Chrome works, as does Molotow Chrome.
      Molotow Chrome needs to be sprayed on heavy and wet and left for at least 24 hours to cure.
      Alclad needs a very glossy undercoat of Alclad Gloss Black and then very light dust coats of the Alclad Chrome.
      Once dry, both respond well to a candy coat.
      I did notice that the Candies needed to be sprayed on a little heavier and wet if you want to retain that chrome shine. If I went with lighter coats and let flash between coats (which is how the Alclad Candy instructions recommend) I lost that high shine from the chrome and ended up with more of a brushed metal look.

      It should work no problem. You will lose a touch of the shine but it will be better protected. I will test it tomorrow, Monday and let you know here how it went. I'll also try their Gloss Kote lacquer too

      I haven't yet, I wanted to test the paint according to the label on the bottle and it says to use the companies candy silver base, which I did. When I test paint for the first time I like to follow the labels instructions. I will be testing in on chrome soon as I just got in more Alclad Candy Colors.

    You also get an interesting result if you apply a base coat under the Silver Candy Base. Painted a coat of the Alclad Gloss Black base and then the Silver Candy base and got a much darker silver colour, more like the Black Chrome. Applying Candy over that gave a very deep almost black colour. Did it with the Candy Green and the result was a dark but glossy greenish-black colour. Like many of Alclads paints, the Candy Base isn't a fully opaque colour so you can influence the Candy coat with various colours of base coat.
