Patches the Dolphin

  • Its not often a dolphin is so easily recognizable but on occasion some have unique injuries/scars or colorations that make them easy to spot - still that doesn't mean you'll see that dolphin again. I have been lucky enough to see this particular Bottlenose Dolphin two times over the four years I've been whale watching.
    This individual is well known along the southern California coast and has been nicknamed Patches due to the white/pinkish patches he has across his gray body. It's believed the patches on his skin are due to Leucism. He and the rest of his Bottlenose Dolphin pod members will appear from time to time throughout the year. Always fun to see him.
