This is a big work, and while it does not require a lot of energy it does need to move. The maestro does a terrific job in not confusing the two.
The best performance of this symnphony I have ever heard during my 89-year old life.

GRANDE et EXCELLENTE interprétation de cette oeuvre, peu jouée malheureusement. Emmanuel Krivine la dirige merveilleusement. Dommage qu'il soit parti avant la fin de son contrat, car son successeur, qui doit l'interpréter bientôt, risque de la saborder. On notera les performances magistrales du retraité flûtiste Philippe Pierlot, de Patrick Messina à la clarinette, Laurent Decker au cor anglais, le quator des cors mené par Hervé Joulain enfin de l'EXCELLENT François Desforges aux timbales, sans négliger Luc Héry violon solo. SUBLIME CONCERT.
What a gorgeous performance of a fabulous work - a work which should be performed far more often than it is. IMHO it's best when performed by a French orchestra. Can anyone tell me whether the bassoons are Buffet-Crampon instruments or Heckel? I much prefer the French bassoon, which sadly seems almost extinct. And who can easily see from the film shots that there are two cornets in the brass section. An example of special tone colour. The woodwind section, especially, is totally amazing.

I got to know this magnificent and rather neglected symphony by heart while stuck on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean due to mechanical problems years ago, so it brings back the best memories of that terrible voyage. In case anyone remembers, it was the Ocean Monarch

Wunderschöne und elegante Aufführung dieser perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt balancierten Tönen aller Instrumente. Die Virtuosität aller Einzelspieler ist echt bewundernswert. Der intelligente Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Wahre französische Musik!

フランクはフランスの作曲家であったと再確認すようなとても新鮮な感銘を受ける名演であると思います。
モントゥーやポール・パレーでこの曲を聴いてきた世代の私ですが、ブラームスやシューマンのドイツ流派の伝統下で創造されたもと信じておりましたが、この動画の導入部の演奏に触れて強い衝撃をうけました。フレーズの捉え方がちょっと神経質かなと思うほどの繊細さで、レース編みのように繰り広げられる構成に初めてフランス的な色彩と構成法を感じ取ることが出来ました。スコアで確かめてみたのですが読み方を間違えている自分に気が付きました。

C'est par le chromatisme que Franck affirme la totalité. Cette magie envahit notre tête et notre cœur. Comment choisir parmi tant d'interprétation d'interprétations ? Celle-ci est magnifique. Merci. J'aime aussi Lombard, mais là comment trouver La référence ?
It was on a casete bought in the ship
I think that I got imprinted on this famous recording of Monteux/Chicago. This is fine. but I think that the 1st movement introduction is supposed to be slow. Then the 1st theme is supposed to be played a lot faster. But here, well, the introduction is quite fast. So I was expecting the 1st theme to come in like a thunderstorm, but no, it's actually quite slow, the tempo isn't differentiated too much.

Franck exerts his great musical sense of humor by modulating through every new key with each measure. I think sometimes even he got “confused” with his sharps and flats and stopped the performance at various times.
I assume because this is a French orchestra and conductor they “forgave” Franck, by virtue of many repeated performances of the symphony.
I also assume that during auditions, EVERY artist must play sections of it before they are considered!
I love the work and this performance. I also enjoy Franck’s repetition of fragments.

Best is still Pierre Monteux. Krivine does a decent job but takes some liberties with tempo and dynamics.
