Burt Bacharach was the melody man, and Hal David was the lyricist. Dionne actually studied music at the Harry College of Music. Personally, I think that her relationship with Hal David was really key to her success with that duo. He wrote lyrics for her voice - and that makes all the difference in the world. Furthermore, she had the informal and formal music education to understand where he was coming from.
