My mom is a nurse, she knew a surgeon at her hospital who died of exhaustion, the man was very tired after a long surgery, he went to take a seat on one of the benches in the hallway and didn’t stand up from there ever again. It’s crazy how much physical and mental strain medical professionals endure.

@@marvelous_bangtanie I know, it’s as if his body knew to hang on until he was done with the surgery and then it just gave out. I’ve seen first hand with my own mom how hard the health industry can be on one’s body, which is probably why she was not supportive of me wanting to pursue a path as a doctor as well, so I ended up studying something else.
How is everyone ignoring the fact this man has lost zero patients, he is a god send! Touched by a angel in the least that’s absolutely amazing

I am a doctor, its not really that common for patients to die during elective surgery, because the anesthesiologist is a doctor very good at keep you alive. He probably lose a lots of patients in post op or because of the pathology, but not during surgery

We were thrown head first into the learning about neurosurgery when my 15 year old son collapsed in the shower. He had suffered a brain aneurysm in his frontal lobe. He was life flighted to our local children's hospital where they saved his life. They prepared us for all the possible outcomes. Luckily after a short stay in ICU, and 2 more weeks on the neuro floor, he walked out of the hospital with zero life changing side effects. He does still struggle with some emotional side effects of the trauma, but he's here! He's 19 now, and other than a 9 inch scar that you can barely see, there is nothing that would let you know we almost lost him. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you for what you do! It's an amazing field and it gave me my spunky middle child back!

They makes surgeon works like hell and expect them to be always at peak, but one fail and they blamed the surgeon
They should! One can't do anything optimally well, with a severe lack of restorative sleep.
if you can't do all that you're not made for this field, simple as that to your mediocre lifestyle this may be out of comprehension but to us it's pretty normal to not sleep for 2 or even 3 days.
@@flaminmongrel6955 Logic like yours is why there's only a few thousand neurosurgeons in the country. By allowing easier shifts, you could have 10000 of them and remove the need for long hours entirely, thereby making it possible in the first place to have 10000 people willing and able to become a neurosurgeon.

No burnout, no lashing out at others randomly to release stress, no existential dread - but instead we have people like you who want everyone to be miserable because you convinced yourself that perpetuating a malignant culture is the definition of an elite medical professional.
I dont know why these sort of things are legal. In my opinion, performing something as critical as brain surgery while massively cognitively impaired sounds dangerous.
Would it not be reasonable to put a 16 hour shift limit in place? My wife was absolutely slammed for 27 hours straight during a call weekend just a few months back. They had 5 surgeries, 6 emergency surgeries, 2 post op heart attacks, 2 post op strokes. 2 people passed away. To me it just seems like they should of swapped her out after 16 hours so she could get 8 hours sleep. And then return. Her co workers were all just off for the weekend, why isn't there a backup call option to relieve people

For context, there are 168 hours in a week. He worked 145. (168-145)\7= he basically had 3 hours a day for sleep and/or anything else like showers and such. That is, if he was allowed to sleep! He most probably had 48 hour shifts, soooo…

Truck drives are forced to rest but BRAIN SURGEONS are not? Yeah. We need consumer protections for patients.
Edit: Yes, I believe that protections are also necessary for the well being of the doctors also.

Instead of advocating for consumer protection for patients, hospitals should not overwork doctors in general lol. This way the welfare of both the patients and doctors are not compromised.

The issue with medicine is that we glorify doing absolutely the most with as little sleep as possible. It’s really sad and they wonder why the suicide rate is high amongst physicians.
It’s also ironic that in order to heal/fix other people’s brains, he has to do damage to his own. We know poor/irregular sleep habits are a risk factor for developing neuro diseases later in life. Sigh

The system needs work. I’m so glad that you all recognize this, next we need change. Nobody should have to suffer like this, it’s unnecessary.
They can’t have a proper life. My husband sleeps at home only 2-3nights a week. During the day he is never home. Working in 4different hospitals. Doesn’t have time to interact with his family, children. I would take my son from the age of 4yo to the hospital where he works at so he can see his father. Crazy.
More than Once we had an emergency in the house and he can’t come home. Had to finish his shift.
My husband had spine surgery due to osteomyelitis getting in there. A neurosurgeon literally saved his life. He was in an emergency situation. Thank you. Thank you.

Because we've turned away from the Father who provides for us and guides us. If you want check out the Asbury university revival, it's a great thing happening atm.

I myself a 2 nd yr med student and it's great you worship your god but its really bad to see that all credit you give is the god whereas we deliberately save a persons life by studying for a decade
@@deepanshuratre1195 I am not negating the docs work, that's why I said God is working though him. I admire that you want to go into such a field but you're missing my point :). Look I'm a writer and artist, and artists generally spend years and years honing their craft right? But I can't take any credit for it. If God didn't give me the drawing talent I wouldn't have it at all. So whatever I do I don't do anything, He does.

So to study medicine, unless you're parents had you and sent you to a good school and had the money to finance this you wouldn't be able to study med at all either right? It's acknowledging that we ourselves are limited and can't do half as much as modern media is trying to make us believe we can.
To the individuals who are commenting about the hours he worked, he stated that this was during residency. Residency is the hands on training individuals receive post med-school and before they are attending. While a 145 hour work week is insane, cardiac and neuro residency programs are pretty demanding, especially during chief months. Thanks for all you do Doctor Hoeflinger, your efforts don't go unnoticed!

I don't give a fuk if you're in training to be the next Batman. Working such unhealthy, bordering on dangerous hours is a practice that needs to be eliminated. No one is functioning at any real competent level or learning g anything when you have been awake longer than 20 hours.
Honestly its insult to punishment to have the physically hardest part of your career right after medical school
Here in Australia many Resident doctors have committed suicide after weeks or months of sleep deprivation & as a RN, I and a number of staff I've worked with have fallen asleep while driving home after long or double shifts. Working such long hours is dangerous for everyone.

During residency doctors work a lot but afterwards, it isn't normally like that. It is still completely crazy!

So much respect for this man. As a society we give celebrities so much admiration and they get paid so much but they don't do what this man does. These people saved my kids life many times over
Not Everyone cares about celebrities, I work Mon-Fri, do chores in Saturdays and Sundays are Erran Days so Some of us are to Busy to know others Exist, I forget to Even talk to my mother sometimes because of How busy my days are, So you know what I think about, when it's the End of the world so I can Actually Rest!!!!

You gotta pay hundreds of thousands, study for a decade and put in 3-7 yrs of on the job training. Its becoming increasingly difficult to convince students who could just start making 6 figures out of college in business or something proportionally easy(compared to surgery) with less work, stress, and abuse which makes the problem even worse

Kindly suggestion: I would replace the word "worshipping" with the words "respecting" and "admiring". You worship God, not doctors, who are human beings that are subject to birth and death, just like the rest of us. I agree with you that the hard work and sacrifice of doctors, and all healthcare workers, such as nurses, techs, and even the cleaning personnel should be much more highly regarded and respected in society. Modern medicine is a team sport, and one that offers great benefit to humanity.

@@davinatest8467 No one's life is saved by any human being entirely. Life is created and taken by God and God alone. Therefore, God decides whom He wants to save and utilizes other human beings, such as doctors, as worldly conduits through which He accomplishes His will.
By your logic, if physicians should be worshipped merely on the merit that they are capable of saving lives, then so too should firefighters, paramedics, nurses, police officers, and lifeguards, who all regularly save lives. In fact, anyone can save a life. Simply learning CPR and performing this life-saving intervention on someone in cardiac arrest, along with using an AED, can save a life. You don't need to be a physician to save a life. Anyone, even you, can save a life at any time. Thus, should every human being be worshipped?
Ultimately, while we may thank Doctors for their great service to humanity-indeed this is truly commendable work-it is not correct that we "worship" them, as this is the definition of idolatry. And idolatry is one of the most severe and punishable of sins according to all the major monotheistic religious belief systems.

This man deserves every penny he gets. With that said, this is not safe. This is the unfortunate consequence of ridiculous tuition costs. We needs more doctors and there are most certainly people who arw capable and willing but they would never be able to afford the schooling.
It also takes great skill to be a neurosurgeon
@@annaw27 yea im sure it does but there are so many people whose potential is never fully realized because they cant afford the schooling. As a straight A student who got put out at 19 and had to start supporting myself and my daughter i can attest to this. I was a dishwasher that made a perfect score on my science FCAT (the state exam where Im from) meanwhile kids who literally used to cheat off of my work are in much higher places because they had wealthy parents.
I am a 3rd generation doctor. I am a medical student now, both my parents are surgeons and they always tell me not to become a surgeon or a doctor but growing up seeing them help people made me realize that there is nothing better in life than helping people in need. I don't know if I am mentally sick but just like when serious killers feel good killing people, I feel amazingly good when I save people's lives, it makes me want to cry with too much joy. I wouldn't mind if I die of exhaustion or worked 145hr a week constantly as long as I am saving lives. I am rich but I really don't care about money or anything else. if I have enough to eat for a day and a place to sleep I am happy to dedicate my life to the medical field. I love to see smiles on the small children's faces when I save their parents, and I love to see the happy faces of the parents when I save their children. it is like a drug to me, I am addicted to smiles and peace.
that being said, I have to admit I am just a human like all other doctors, lack of sleep is bad. I want to work constantly to save lives but I do realize that sometime when I am exhausted my brain, doesn't work properly to do small tasks like driving, reading, or sometimes even thinking about how to solve a small task. so I am scared that I might unwillingly make a mistake that I will regret in the future.

@@elhamhemat572 yes it is cringe because its dangerous to call yourself a doctor when you don't have the qualifications yet. People will think you're medical advice is valid when you call yourself a doctor. Look I'm a 2nd year medical student and I'm nowhere near competant to a level where I can give sound medical advice to patients. You learn how to effectively do that all in residency/internship after you graduate

@@orangew3988 the smallest percentage of surgery-related deaths happens during surgery, because there they are more closely monitored than even in the ICU and there are multiple doctors of different specialities right there.
Even if the surgery is eventually fatal, it is usually because of complications afterwards

Even if the pt is justified; just try it. You better have half a million in your pocket before you even walk into the lawyers office. They're all buddies & will cover for each other.
the sad part is u can only sue a hospital if the person who was harmed died and is no longer able to support his family, so if u don't work or are the sole person working being the bread earner u can't sue a hospital how scary is that not alotof people know this but if they kill a house wife mother u can't sue the only way u can sue is if the person was the sole earner for a person and only that person can sue and only for the amount they would be out based on a 10 years payout so if there age would be of retirement in a few years can't go passed that time even if they wouldn't have retired we just went through this my mother in law had not been eating she went into the hospital they messed up and gave her a shot then put her on a ventilator when she had a dnr but they gave her meds that she didn't need it was a accident by nurse who had been there to long on shift the ventilator kept her alive long enough for everyone to come see her they took her off and she died she drowned in her own lungs 🫁 from medication she was allergic to all she needed was a iv and to find out why she wasn't eating she was about 70 but ran around like she was 40s her husband had after 50 years just left her so we imagine she was depressed but when we tried to sue we found out the rules and laws about sueing a hospital or anyone working in the hospital really messed up she had a long road ahead of her had she not been killed she was coming over everyday to help take care of me and my kids after my accident she put notes all around my house to help me becaue I lost alot of my memory didn't know where things are and have a note next to my bed it's OK ur alright u were in a accident with the date and it's in a frame with what's happening then in my bathroom another one in my closet the loss we have from losing her is so great I'm guessing she got tired of repeating what happened my husband has never recovered from losing his wife then mom and his dad died 3 months later poor guy isn't doing so great

I had neurosurgery 27 days ago. It is an envrotic tumor. I have had 3 tumors removed and I am 14. My tumor is an epileptic tumor that keeps growing back. I have had brain surgery every 5 years since I was 3. Just hoping third times a charm. I would love to be a neurosurgeon one day and hep kids like me.

My husband had surgery over 2 years ago and it went a little late. I was tired from waiting to hear the outcome. After the surgeon came out and told me everything was fine, he mentioned that he was leaving that hospital to go to another hospital to perform a surgery. I felt ashamed of my selfishness to be tired from waiting while this man was still working to save lives. God bless those with healing hands and healing hearts.

After 16hrs of work as an RN I am already compromised mentally and physically. So having them going 48hrs is absolutely insane and unsafe.
That’s the truth of medicine fields. Especially in third world country
I’m a nurse and 12-13 hr shifts are soo brutal to complete. Towards the end of my shift I find that it’s hard for me to even say my words right because I’m so tired. This needs to change and allow our healthcare workers more rest time. ❤

I remember when my 3 yrld brother passed during surgery his team of drs were crying. These were heart surgeons but losing a patient has to be traumatic in every medical field. God bless all of the drs and nurses and the front office people. Each and every one of you were blessed with a gift from God. Thank you for your service.
An AMAZING field of medicine, full of mysteries & MIRACLES! ..It is grueling ..long..tedious care ..and you have to be meticulous in your observation & care!…It takes VERY special people, dedicated to
making a difference , to work in this specialty. … the will of a person to overcome & heal & the skill, knowledge & sacrifices of all areas of healthcare …from Drs to nurses, PT, RT, & beyond…it can be exhausting, gut wrenching .. heartbreaking … but they will never quit or give up hope…without a fight! … Thank you for your dedication & sacrifices!! He was oddly specific saying no one died during surgery but never mentions whether they died of preventable complications.
Neurosurgeons are the Top of the Medical field...I have great respect for them as I had one do reconstruction due to a masctomy .....he had an easy going personality and was compassionate....God Bless These Surgeons ❤

I incurred a point blank gsw w/ a 357 mag to my left parietal-oppictial in 1992. Thank you for the job you do. It was long road back but I did graduate from the U of Az with BS in Nutrition & Chemistry. They physical therapy wasn't that b/c I was college swimmer & LaCrosse athlete. The psychological recovery was more complicated. We should talk. I use to an army biological warfare specialist out of Ft. Detrick at USAMRIID. I was pretty motivated to get my facilities back, I really didn't have option but the ADDH. I have videos you can use for free.

Old school residencies (pre-2003): no hour limits. 3 months of "work until the work is done" were common when on trauma/ED/ICU/L&D rotations. Any doc over the age of 50 put in serious hours if they were residency trained. THE POINT of this is to train to function when you're not at your best so you make the right call when you have no back-up.
Any surgeon, OBGYN, or ED physician who works in rural/small community hospitals has no backup and needs to be able to function when the fecal material hits the rapidly spinning blades. Old docs are often better at this than young docs at 3am because we were there repeatedly during training. The newer docs generally have mad skills and sometimes lack a little confidence when super tired.
I think this is a public service. How very generous of the doctor to answer questions that he has probably answered a hundred times already.

I get caffeinated before my 24 hr EMS shifts cuz inner city 89% of the time you don’t get sleep, but standing in one place for 15 hours would kill my ADHD and wipe me out emotionally so kudos to you doc for being able to sustain that insane lifestyle/line of work. ❤ We need more of you on our planet.
Neurosurgeons are some of the most underrated people for the amazing work they do. Far too many people don't understand how talented these people are. In my opinion, these are the most dedicated and best in the field of medicine. They are incredible
