    Thanks for your patience, everyone. RUclips processing issues are what caused the delete/re-upload (and they're also the reason we have to settle for FHD on this one instead of 4K). You get what you pay for, I guess!

      YT has been pooping its britches every single day since the past two months, live streams getting unlisted randomly, barring notifications for certain channels (A few streamers I watch are still plagued with this and they are sick and tired of it) and reporting improper watch times. I mean, I love the platform but these hiccups really make you question the viability of the same as a source of delivering content to your viewers.

    Almost 3 years later I'm still using the pixel Slate. The interface has gotten better but I've gone through periods where I don't use it at all and then I use it constantly. For the most part now I just use it for work to check off list and to annotate PDFs and what not very like stuff. And I also use it to read but I do prefer a smaller tablet I'm looking at the HP X2 11 or the Lenovo duet. My biggest gripe with this device is the stupid Folio keyboard case. It just seems all of a sudden it stopped working whatsoever. I looked online and a lot of other people still have their pixel slate have the same exact issue after a certain update. And I kind of don't want to Shell out more money for another keyboard and I do feel like the pixel slate is too big to be a tablet. The speakers are really good though, and so is it the screen. Right now I'm using the voice thing to type this out and that's actually working really really well but I just wish the Folio keyboard never broke in the first place. All in all if you're looking for a tablet the pixel slate gotten rid a lot of its initial issues. You can find pretty good deals on them now so I would recommend that you can pick one up or pick up a Lenovo Duet. Don't get the folio case that will probably already be broken out the box

      I know... Such a shame. But Google is always trying to do something to change things up that don't need changing. They had a Pixel C that I guess failed in sales. No one talks about that tablet. They really should bring it back for Android Q.

    I bought the Pixel Slate for what it is primarily which is a tablet. In that regard it does a very good job doing all the things I need it to do.
    For anyone looking at this device do yourself a favor and be sure you understand what Chrome OS is all about. The biggest issue I think most people have is they don't know the premise behind Chrome OS and in what ways it is different (good and bad) from either a Windows or Mac device. So job 1 should be to understand the OS before you buy any Chrome device. Because you are really buying Chrome OS first and foremost. The device you choose is secondary.
    After that you need to decide what form factor you want. If a laptop is your priority you will find better (Chrome OS) options that will do a much better job as a laptop than the Pixel Slate and likely at a much better price point.
    However... if you have done your homework and you are interested in buying a tablet running Chrome OS there is simply none better than the Pixel Slate. Especially given how Google continues to develop Chrome OS adding more functionality, features and improving the overall user experience.
    I chose the Pixel Slate for three main reasons.
    1.Build Quality
    2.It's a Google device so any improvements/updates to the Chrome OS will be immediately experienced.
    3.Future proof hardware.
    I think we all know the "one device to do it all" is a long way off. IMO the Pixel Slate is a tablet. If it was trying to be a laptop the keyboard would not be a seperate piece of hardware However I appreciate the option of being able to have a "laptop" form factor when I want it by attaching the keyboard. But again, I want a tablet 90% of the time and as such I don't want a keyboard disrupting that experience 90% of the time when using the device. For the 10% it is a laptop I have had zero issues.
    Anyway, I just feel the Slate has been bashed and trashed from the start and I find it really surprising because I haven't once experienced any disappointment with mine. Its fast, has great hardware, looks great and it does everything I want it to do. I admit it isn't perfect but I have yet to see a "perfect" device regardless of name on it.
    Likely the biggest reason I have enjoyed my Pixel Slate so much is because my expectations are aligned with what and where Chrome OS is at this point in time. As I said above, you have to want Chrome OS first and foremost. And if you do and you know what you are getting I can't imagine anyone being unhappy with the Pixel Slate.

    • @rdarville70
      @rdarville70 5 лет назад

      @@stevelsullivanorg I chose the i5 version as a more future proof solution. As Google expands the capabilities of Chrome OS I didn't want the hardware to be a limiting factor. Although I can appreciate the i5 version is expensive given Chrome's current capabilities. But again, if you are buying in to the future of the OS it certainly worth considering. Good luck with your choice and enjoy.

    OK, Michael, time to revisit this review? Bought the Pixel Slate over the black friday to Dec 31 period when the i3 model was $450 with the keyboard and pen included. That takes away the price concern. I found the OS to be a lot less glitchy and more built out than your review of a year ago. It's still big for a tablet, but I've found myself liking that.
    I used my student ID to get an additional 10% off, bringing it down to $405; then google delayed my shipment by 20 days and gave me a $50 appeasement gift. At $355, I don't think I could go wrong!

    Excellent review and your comment on the Pixelbook echoes my own, having owned the i5 version a year ago. Superb form factor, keyboard, display, pen and it was very speedy, no slow down. But, and this is still the case today, there are NO productivity apps on Chrome or iOS that equal desktop. Cloud apps are too glitchy, such as the excellent draw.io. I have an 11" iPad Pro with Pencil, superb hardware etc, but still, I keep going back to my MacOS and Windows machines to do file management and speedy creative or development work, because #mouse, drag and drop etc etc. Oh, and Adobe CC! Maybe 2020 will deliver the perfect mobile device that offers desktop productivity? Love you reviews anyway, always informative, and tend to echo my own opinion on devices I have tried or owned. Going to see if you have reviewed the new Mac mini. I have had one a week or so now, and it is excellent. Not even heard the fan(s) yet, despite running Premiere and a lot more stuff.

There's *at least* a dozen of similar bugs in current Stable version of Chrome OS, that I can point out of the top of my head, and it has never been the case with the platform, before it started supporting Android. Chrome OS was a simple, lightweight, fluid, straightforward system, that got the job done, and Google ruined it.

There are surprisingly few tablets that have the size and resolution to do what I want, and in that small list, the Pixel Slate has the best resolution, but I'm still leaning towards the HP Chromebook x2 at the moment. The Slate and Surface Pro are just too expensive for what amounts to a glorified media device.

    Ok, I just started watching reviews of the Pixel Slate and Chrome OS devices in general in Jan 2020. Back then it seemed like the Slate had suffered with a multitude of bad reviews as did Chrome OS in general. About that time my android tablet died and I use it extensively for my music performances. The list of android tablets has gotten shorter. And I am not an Apple fan. So the Slate caught my eye. But that price for the i5-i7 models shut me down. Google came to my rescue by offering the Slate in a bundle with keyboard and pen for $599 for the i5 8 gig 128 storage model. I jumped and have no regrets yet. Its fast, I've had no lag issues and the speakers are great. Chrome OS has gotten better as well. I believe whether you like a device depends on your needs. If it ticks all the boxes for your needs who cares if can't double as a gaming powerhouse? If the great pricing is still available this will make someone looking for a great 2 in 1 for light work and entertainment plus those who work with Linux apps a great get!

    The Pixel Slate was my hope for a decent Android tablet for 2018-2019, but it looks like that's not going to happen. Google was so good with the Nexus 7 and Pixel C, I didn't think the Slate would fail so hard like this. Right now I am using a Samsung Tab S4 which came out shortly before the new Ipad line-up last year and pretty happy with it. Since I already use a Note 9, all my notes get synced up with the tablet, and media consumption is pretty decent on this. I don't think it can replace a full sized laptop, but it comes close.

    To me the reason I wouldn't pay a premium for a Chromebook is there is no specialized apps built specifically for it. Sure you have Android but that's in its early stages and needs more refining.
    I know ChromeOS was built for the web but if Google wanna make it tablet friendly I wanna see some apps made specifically for that.

    I will rock my Pixelbook until it gets too old to support. Hopefully Google will have worked out the kinks in the slate line, or perhaps update the book line? I'd be totally ok with a newer PixelBook.

    Those issues of consistent design, lag, etc. are shared across all of ChromeOS, not just on the pixelbook.
    Having to use one everyday for school, this drove me nuts 5 minutes after the update.

    Would you consider reviewing the Samsung Tab S4? It's gone under the radar since it runs Android but I've been very pleased with it and want to see how others feel.

    I wish Google would figure out the tablet market already. I went through 2 generations of Nexus 7, a Nexus 9, and random tinkering with a Samsung tablet to assist my mum. The tablet experience that I wanted is just not there and I ended up getting a 2018 iPad. At the very least, I know Apple will update iOS for a long time, unlike Android tablets would either don't get any OS update or would get OS update but only for 2 years max. Tablets, unlike phones, are going to last longer. I wish Google and other associated parties would realize that too (and maybe do the same in the phone market).

    But how is performance on the i7 model? Everyone I've seen has the Celeron or i5

    • @TheMrMobile

      From what I've seen and read, this is an optimization issue with ChromeOS, rather than a hardware-specific thing. I'm happy to be proven wrong on that - but not gonna go buy an i7 version of this thing to test it myself. :)

      @TechDove 5 лет назад +5

      MrMobile [Michael Fisher] well I'm not going to go buy one to test myself either. So we'll just call it a draw and say it's probably still pretty bad, given your statement on software optimization. Thanks for the reply!

      Well I am on the beta channel for builds with an i5 and when it comes to the lag or slowdowns I really haven't experienced any of the disasters of performance that the reviews have been showing. Web pages load instantly, in fact faster than my iPad pro 11". Full desktop browser is definitely nice as well. Perhaps it's the Android apps I use aren't really problematic or demanding like what everyone is using. I do hate the folio keyboard though since it isn't rigid enough for using on a lap and such, I'm going to try the brydge and see how that works. I did like the pixel book and I'm sorry I returned it honestly. The pixel book had terrible speakers though and last year's specs. If they come out with a newer version of the pixel book that's got the front firing speakers and updated specs I'll end up giving the slate away to a friend.

      @@nnekdmejeke120 what do you think of the slates display? How's it's performance compared to the iPad pro 11? I have the 11 but I'm looking for something with a GOOD keyboard folio option to type on. I don't always like lugging a full on laptop around
