Ep 50 1700 NM Solo Sail to France fm Azores

- I sail from Azores to France -- the long way around -- to avoid the Azores High. Spinnaker launches, solar power, fine cuisine, Iridium GO, beating to windward..... a bit of everything -- but no drama! Boring is good when cruising.
Amazing. The simplicity and natural way of someone who got nothing to prove, and no expectations to fill, make the best sailing videos. What a great stress relieve of a sail video. Salut
Thanks for the very kind feedback Ricardo. Much appreciated.
I wholeheartedly agree, Patrick makes some of the best pure sailing videos out there. Everyone else wants to show me their diving and water skiing adventures when all I want is to see them sailing as much as possible and talk to me about their boat and how they do things.
@@maurelius57 And don't forget all the hot ladies of the "Sailing XY" channels who are, coincidentally, always in a very "favorable" thumbnail and half the video the cam is pointed straight at their goods.
I always thought there are other sites for that kind of stuff...

Great to see you back (again), Sir. Echoing others' words - great videos. I find them hugely informative, and without the useless "distractions"! Like the occasional humorous comments and musical references, too.
Good wishes from a retired Flt Lt (RAF), now residing in Perth, Western Australia.
Stay safe.
Arvind Maharaj.
By a wide margin, my favorite sailing channel. Thoroughly enjoyable viewing.
Far too kind Charlie.
Keep it up Sir!
Wow Solo Spinnaker sailing!
I'm just poling out my oversized gib. Hats off to you again Sir!
A true inspiration to those that lack confidence to venture further offshore, calm and constructive. There's something about one man - one camera, not multiple cameras and drones everywhere. Good to see that you manage with only equipment that you need not fitted out with a boat full of expensive gizmos. All in all very accessible and relatable, I have enjoyed your adventures immensely, so much so I am looking at buying a camera and am considering sailing my yacht to Lanzarote via Azores and Madiera. Good to see you preparing proper food as well not eating cold ravioli out of a tin like Eric! Well done can't wait for your next adventure.
Ha! Eric the Viking is a colorful character in every sense of the word. My simple production method is not by design, but rather because I don't know how to do anything more sophisticated, (but don't really have any desire to learn either). :-) Thanks for the kind words.
no drama, no bikinis, no clickbait, no fake personality. best sailing channel
Much appreciated tgt.
Superb, a gentleman with class. One of my very favourite sailing channels, you’ve stoked my wanderlust and kept my modest yacht refit going, 2-3 weeks before splash down.
Good luck with the getting feet wet. I'm sure you will have a great time!
I'm 62yo, somewhat in the range of Patrick's age, probably a bit younger, and I hope to be joining him very soon. I don't have a lot of sailing experience, none offshore, but I always thought of myself as an adventurer. But what do you know, I've lived my whole life with very little adventure and looking back at the opportunities I forwent with regret, I realize that this is the time. I am still, like Patrick, fit for my age. To me, exploring the world on a small sailboat is an ideal retirement.
I am very enamored of the Contessa 32. I know that you are to never to fall in love with a boat, but certainly, if you are going to fall in love with a boat, the Contessa 32 is one of those boats.

Like Patrick, I have a very understanding wife. She doesn't necessarily want to always share my passion for sailing (fair weather sailor).
I live inland in England 100-200 miles away from the sea. I started offshore sailing in the late 1970s/80s by looking for crewing opportunities at coastal sailing clubs (found via paper publications, before the internet became established). I tried to sail in every season to experience as many different weather and sea conditions. I gained confidence that multiple day/night offshore passages were within my comfort zone. It's a fact that not everyone is cut out for extended periods of heavy weather sailing, try before you buy.
It was also great to learn from experienced skippers. Later, (90s) I went on to take my RYA Day, Coastal tidal Skipper and Yachtmaster exams.
It wasn't until the 2000s that I owned my own boats, starting small and cheap. Due to personal circumstances I've now gone full circle back to a 28.5ft coastal, rather than bluewater boat. It's more than capable of covering my current aspirations, has needed work, but has cost less than a secondhand car.
Good luck with making your own dreams come true.
I'm proply around 2 years to finish my boat i had to save her albin ballad 30
Such a great episode Patrick!! Thank you for taking us on the journey with you!
Thanks for the kind feedback Matthew.
Dear Patrick - during my lock down, both you and Eric Aanderaa have kept me sane. And between you, you have inspired me to learn to sail. And so I have begun my training and hopefully by this time next year I will be able to wave 'thank you' in person as I sail by. Thank you.
You've made my day Brian. I warn you though, it can be addictive! Fair winds.
Sir Patrick, your elegant&natural way of sailing is always a pleasure to watch. Fair Winds ;-)
Thank you kindly Stefano. :-)
You are my hero, Mr. Laine.
...and you make my heart sing...
The Troggs......immortal.
Love your humor, you remind me of our junior officers on board a American submarine, always quick to teach
Thanks Mitchell. I wasn't smart enough to get on submarines. Those guys are really at the top of the pyramid. Us aviators spent our free time at the bar making up stories. :-)
Alannis Morrisette! I do love how you subtly manage to include a song title in all your videos. From one military man to another, this reminds me of boring briefings where the only source of entertainment was catching the eye of a buddy when you managed to get the pre-arranged word in when briefing the CO! Loving the channel.
Well-spotted Macph! This started as a challenge with my daughters, but then became a bit of fun as you suggest. (I too used to insert subtle messages in my briefings for the amusement of my squadron mates. Great fun.) Fair winds.
@@patricklaine6958 I'm going to do that at my KofC meetings.
Salut Patrick! Thank you for your excellent sailing programmes. They are consistently the most enjoyable, informative and entertaining sailing films available here and also technically really well made, you always seem to avoid awkward camera angles, turning the lens into the light or extraneous noise. I retired close to La Rochelle in 2016 after visiting for 30 years but unfortunately I missed the last year there as illness made me return to Ireland for treatment and during my (successful) recovery your films provided me with stimulation and views of my adopted home. I applaud your relentless reserve of good manners. Good manners can seem lost on people but they are never wasted and it is a pleasure to promote civility on this platform when we can. Thank you, David Thompson
The next time you make it to LR, give a shout, and we'll have a cold one together. Fair winds!
Riding along with you on RUclips during your journeys is an absolute joy. Thank you for sharing and I hope you continue for years to come!
I so want to do this someday soon, thanks for the inspiring and informative videos Patrick
Great to have met you and Isabel in Ponta Delgarda and glad you made it home safely. Our passage back to Brest was a mixture of strong winds and calms, certainly the most challenging sailing we’ve done but a great experience nonetheless. I felt the depth of feeling in your assertion that a seven nation army couldn’t keep you from your berth. We felt the same however, as we approached land the wind completely died and we discovered that an electrical fault wouldn’t let our engine start which left us drifting at some speed in the unforgiving Brittany tidal current. An exciting end to a tough passage. The story ends well however as we were rescued by a lovely French family (thank you Sarabande) and an accompanying bottle nose dolphin.
Ouch. That would be a nightmare arrival.... I read that this happened to someone arriving to Horta, who had lost his engine. The wind died, and the current carried him into the steep cliffs just before the harbour. He lost his boat. Thankfully you had a much better outcome. Oof.
Fantastic Patrick, thank you once again for sharing !
Quietly enjoyable as always, and instructive. Thank you!
Good fun to watch, seems that you have enjoyed your journey quite a bit, good on you!
I do always enjoy getting out to sea....... The circumstances for this trip were exceptional, but great fun nonetheless.
You make it look effortless! Looking good! All the best from Chicago!
Excellent Vlog, keep them coming!
I do like your little segues into your boat tech. The fuel cell is interesting, but so too is your little addition of practical solar and iridium go.
Skipper, you remind me of one of my old Air Bosses Norm Westerbuhr, on the Enterprise CVN 65 he was A7 driver he always said one aircraft one seat one pilot the only way to fly. So here you are crossing oceans one boat one helm one captain. Fairwinds my friend make it home safely. You make my social distancing much easier to bear.
Check out my comment, similar
.... and in the case of the A-7...... one engine.....
Most F14 drivers would always say in private, "I'd rather have another 200 lbs of fuel." :-) A7 drivers had the good life.
Well, technically two helms! :)
@@patricklaine6958 Ha! We AF Phantom drivers said the same thing.
what an enjoyable video - modestly and calmly delivered. inspiring!
Very therapeutic. Thank you Patrick
These videos are just fantastic. You are an inspiration Patrick. 3 years and a bit till I retire and I can buy my own SV 🇬🇧🏴🏴
Buy it soon and enjoy practicing carpentry, painting, metalworking, and mountain (mast) climbing skills. It will be ready for launch when you retire.
Good for you RF. Great adventures await you.
I was sure there would be a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape waiting at the dock.
A case was waiting at home. :-)
Thank you Patrick for another real world education. As someone looking to follow in the footsteps it makes me smile to see how capable the Bavaria performs as a single handed option. 2 helms too dangerous (no problem). Hull shape not blue water enough ( no problem). Longitudinal galley without support. (Spaghetti Bolognese). Ah, let’s practice with the kite.( no problem). So very competent. Planning and execution first class. Keep the adventures coming. Stay safe.
Very kind Paul. Good luck on your search.
Thanks for this again Patrick. Lots of tips and I enjoyed it a lot.
Great stuff Patrick, thanks for sharing. Are you planning anymore trips this year ?
I certainly want to Niall.....but this virus thing makes me think that the rest of this season will be spent sailing in the local bay....... If there is a miraculous change, I will cast off lines again for another major sortie.
Two great music references in this vid Patrick!!! Jimi, Blind Faith!, and Bruce. My thoughts on reefing the main and jib at sunset single handing...If you think you should reef, you probably already should have. That said, everything in moderation, including moderation. Thanks again :)
Sun Love Sailing You forgot the White Stripes!
Scott Sterry True I did Scott, another great band!
Inspirational.
Keep the videos coming, they're great.
Once again, really relaxing and informative interlude to my day. Merci beaucoup.
11:47 A shout out to the Big Man.
From Wikipedia: Clarence Anicholas Clemons Jr., also known as The Big Man, was an American musician and actor. From 1972 until his death in 2011, he was the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.
A legend who is dearly missed.
Steve Winwood, the Troggs and Jack White......nice!
White stripes Hanford Jack with his sister/wife :):):)
He says the music references, at least the Joni Mitchell ones, are for his daughters. I wonder how many are off the top of his head, and how many are planned/scripted, as he listens to his favorite music...
@@andybrands1883 yes. yes, and technically "Can't Find My Way Home" was Blind Faith but Winwood wrote it.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about. ;-) (You missed a very subtle Todd Rundgren right at the start.)
@@patricklaine6958 7 nation army - White Stripes ??
thank you for sharing the experiens with us Patrick :-)
Just great as always Patrick, many thanks.
I love the difference between yours and Erik Aanderaa sailing videos. You: I'm just knocking up a spaghetti Bolognese from scratch, Eric opens up a tin of spaghetti bolognese and eats it cold straight from the tin. If you haven't seen his vids you have got to try his Channel. Two Solo Sailers, Two styles of sailing same great result.
God, they are both great!!! I enjoy all their adventures as soon as they come up!!!
Two different folks. I like Erik's sailing in harsh conditions but I like Patrick's considered approach. I know which boat I'd rather eat on, but I'd sail with both. Both are very skilled and Erik has a background in marine safety in very harsh conditions. I have sailed where Erik sails. My boat was 365 feet long with a ships company of 180. In conditions so harsh that at times no hot food was served for 24 hour periods and there were only about 20 of us that were eating anyway.
Guys I wasn't trying to be nasty about either one of them. I would sail with either one in a heartbeat. I was just putting it out there how two totally different approaches can end up with the same great adventure. You can listen to Heavy metal and Classical, just not at the same time. Well at least I haven't tried.
I love Erik's gusto for life. His risk aversion profile is not the same as mine, but I do admire his spirit. He has grown up in an area of extreme conditions, so probably can judge the risk better than most of us.
@@jollyroger8025 , Congratulations, you win Jerk-off of the week, a very prestigious award battled for by the worst of the human species.
The most valuable and the least useful silent partners are phantom shipmates :)
I burst out laughing at seven nation army reference. Not expecting that after Satie.
Patrick - if you are so kind and if it works, could you expand on couple of topics you mentioned in this video: your sailing background and how you avoid accidental jibes.
Thanks. I think anyone who says they haven't done an accidental jibe is being economical with the truth. They can sneak up on you -- if you set the sail at 130° apparent downwind and the wind slowly shifts, you may get caught out. Setting the autopilot to constant wind angle rather than mag heading may help. I use a brake/preventer when sailing downwind which helps prevent low wind jibes, but will not stop a major crash in high winds. I don't think there is a magic solution......other than to constantly monitor the main when sailing deep downwind --- something that is hard for a solo sailor to do.
@@patricklaine6958 Thanks Patrick. As a newbie sailor, I had a few accidental jibes and they are not fun.
A pleasure, thank you for inviting us.
Great stuff Patrick, I like you style and you’re doing well on it. Lets hope the world is more open next season.
If we lose our licenses as a pilots - no problem, usually we have pensions or loss of license.
Nobody can stop us from sailing!
Much easier to reef in daylight, especially at our age.
Love your stuff Patrick!
very inspiring person amazingly calm it a tense situation we have a lot to learn from you
One night you’ll regret not putting a reef in at sunset. Curious as to why you had the main sheeted in when you were setting the spinnaker? Still get annoyed at how fresh and clean shaven you always look 😩
Good point Niall. In other videos where I show the spinnaker launch I explain that I sheeted in the main to allow the camera a better view. I should have repeated that message. When the camera is not on, the main is out.
Patrick Laine I have the memory retention of a goldfish 🤪
Thank you Patrick for taking us along. The generosity and humility with which you share your experiences with us, make it such a pleasure to watch your videos. Bons vents !
Another great video Patrick. Thank you.
Inspirational Patrick. Subscribed!
Love it! And great inspiration! Thanks Patrick!
Thanks so much Fred.
Muito bom relato, comandante!!!!!!
Thank you!!!!
Love the videos. I learn so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and adventures!
Thanks for the kind feedback Gio. Much appreciated.
Thank you Patrick! It is such a pleasure to follow your adventures. Your videos are the best!
Great video! It Really feels like I'm onboard with you when watching this! Keep up the good work!
Three years ago i saw your first video and i knew that three years later i will still be commenting on your channel. Great video Patrick and yes the same feeling is over here in Canada everywhere you go the virus threat is present and it puts a damper on peoples feelings and attitudes. Cheers from the great white north.
Welcome back George. I have special respect for those like you who sat through those first horrible videos --- noisy, jittery camera, talking head, etc., and stayed with me. Many thanks. Really wish I could have made it to NF this year.......but think cancellation was a wise decision.
Thanks for posting all these videos...keep up the good work
What a calm ,collect cool dude ! Bravo 👏
Impressive single handed handling of the spinnaker! Hope they get control of the Covid outbreaks quickly. Looking forward to your next video.
Thank you, love the technical descriptions of why and what's of your sailing👌💯🇺🇸
Another very enjoyable video, thank you Patrick.
Thanks for your videos. I learned a lot!!
Well done Patrick! ........ it's always a pleasure watching you!
Another enlightening video thank you Patrick stay well and safe ⛵️🇬🇧
Great to watch Patrick , 👍
Great vídeo, great sailor speaker. Cheers from Lisbon
Full control and a pleasure to watch.
Really enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them. Once again, your deck looks very clean and secure and your thinking ahead planning and your strategies to try new and different techniques is very inspiring. It's not surprising to me how your aviation background can really prepare a person for the world of sailing. I was thinking back to what I was doing on Sunday, July 12 and it was really mundane and routine from the experiences you were you having. Sitting at the stern of Isabelle with your feet dangling in the ocean water is as good as it gets. That's really living life to the fullest. So awesome ! ! !
Very Interesting! I am so sorry I missed your trip here! Love your adventures!
Bravo, we always enjoy your videos hugely, this was no exception......encore please!!
Welcome home Patrick and thankyou for another great video.
Patrick , I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post your content. Very informative.
Love your channel and how you relax listening to Erik Satie's gymnopedies! Keep them coming in this relaxed way of yours.
This video was the highlight of the week. Thank you very much for sharing. Please stay healthy. I'm looking forward to many more videos of yours.
I really enjoyed this. Glad you are home safely.
Fair winds to you Mark.
Thanks for doing what you do and sharing it! Your sagacity is refreshing. Don't be afraid to share more of your personal journey - I suspect we'd glean wisdom there as well. For myself, my two daughters will be flying the coop soon and I'm inspired to retire and re-invent myself as you've done. Stay (mostly) safe and keep the videos coming! PS. Merci for the Croque Madame recipe - a new favorite thing...
Sailing in retirement sure beats flipping back and forth between CNN and Fox News. :-) Good luck with your sailing adventures.
Can t wait to see more of your inspiration video s ,i always learn from them.top
Very impressive to see people sail alone for long durations. Thanks for sharing
Finally!! I thought something happened? Glad to see you are alive 👍
Well I am so disappointed there’s no more. It’s another inspiring trip. Thank you
Very kind of you. Many thanks Ahmad.
Awesome videos,keep them coming.
Very instructive and a joy to see. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Wil! Many thanks.
Thank you for sharing your journey Patrick! Truly appreciate the time and effort editing these videos requires. Enjoy the season!
Welcome back -- and thanks for the kind words.
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Enjoyed watching your videos. Concentrating on the sailing and the boat makes one of the unique channels. Thank you.
Thank you very much Simon!
Just a great video, as usual. Thank you. My favorite sailing blog.
Glad you enjoyed it George.
Such an adventure you have Patrick, thank you Sir
My pleasure Blair! Thanks.
Just beautiful.
I vote for the reefing before sunset Patrick. Even updated forecasts miss local squalls that can be really nasty.
Excellent video as usual.
Thank you
Thanks for voting. It must be noted that with my single line reefing system, it is extremely easy to put in a reef --- no need to go to the mast. The jury is still out. ;-)
Thanks for the detailed explanations and tips!
My pleasure Shimon! Fair winds.
Patrick, it has been a pleasure seeing you again on board! What an adventure!
Thank you!!
Seven nation army wouldn't dare to stop you sailing again!!
Congratulations Patrick!

Thanks Patrick ,I always like your uploads as I learn a lot about different gear and tactics ,non voyage .
Thanks John.
Aye m8, I do love all your poetic references. And even more, you show what’s related to sailing, and in a brilliant way. Thnx for all your efforts making me able to watch this. 🙏🏽
Welcome back MiQ. Thanks for the kind feedback.
Thanks for bringing us along on another passage! I really enjoy hearing about your route planning. My favorite was your discussion of the currents in the English Channel and how you dealt with them. More of that please! ;-)
Welcome back my friends.

Glad you like them E89! Very kind of you.
Looking sharp Sir!
