Imagine getting a really deep emotional message from someone pouring their heart out and at the end it signs something like - sincerely, chicken breast.
My husband’s grandparents speak Spanish, and very little English. We have a group chat with the whole family, and there’s a mixture of Apple and Android users, so whenever someone uses a ‘👍’ emoji on a shared picture, the chat generates a message saying ‘liked an image’. Now the Abuelos think that it’s normal speech, and send messages saying ‘loved an images’, and even the occasional Spanish counterpart. 🤦🏼♀️
My family is split between Android and Apple users. The Apple users love reacting to everyone's messages in the group chat, and I'm an Android user, so I get those "liked/emphasized/laughed at __" messages every time. Sometimes, when there are a lot of those, my dad, a fellow Android user, will start poking fun at them by *manually writing reaction messages to those reactions.* The result is a lot of moments where half the conversation is [Original Message] > "(Mom) laughed at "[Original Message]"" "(Sister) laughed at "[Original Message]"" "(Dad) laughed at "Mom laughed at "[Original Message]""" I want to die
i like how Matt reads these as if the signature is just an involuntary thing people say out loud in conversations, like saying someone died and then immediately yelling out "LIVE LAUGH LOVE" afterwards without any control
I was looking up "TEXT FAILS" on Google and I came across one where a mom was texting all the relatives and saying... "JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THE SAD NEWS THAT GRANDMA DIED! ~LOL~"... once she gets to her child they go..."MOM! DO YOU KNOW WHAT LOL MEANS?!"... Mom: LOTS OF LOVE... NO mom it means LAUGH OUT LOUD... Mom: OH NO! I SENT THAT TEXT TO THE WHOLE FAMILY!... Side note: Way back when LOL was brand new...I actually thought it meant LOTS OF LOVE as well. 🤣🤪😂

OMG the "Sent from my iPad" just made me remember one of my professors. One little problem I have with text signatures (aside from everything already mentioned in the video) is that there's usually no indication that it's a text signature and not just part of the text. So when it's not just your name (or sometimes even when it is), people probably wouldn't realize that you didn't manually add that weird part to the end of your text, your phone does it automatically to _all_ of your texts. And in certain contexts it could even look like it's part of the last sentence, making it hard to tell what you're even talking about.
For the longest time, I would have my text signature set as one of my favorite quotes from Distractible. So for the longest time, if I ever needed to rant to someone, it would be this super emotional wall of text. So it would be me ranting about how bad my day was, then it would end with my favorite quote at the time. THIS DOESN'T SEEM LIKE HOW YOU INSTALL A FRIDGE!
I've had experience with email signatures, of course, but I was today years old when I learned that text signatures were ever a thing. The absolute horror.
The part at 6:38 is actually meant to be pronounced Moi-re, goi-re, and graw( oi as in spoil, and aw is an maw) It’s in Irish and it means Live, Laughter, Love. (Ps it’s meant to be spelt mair, gáire and grá, matt’s pronunciation was actually correct due to the missing fadas)
I've never even heard of signatures. They seem so stupid but funny at the same time 😂 Edit: I meant 'text signature' Edit 2: Thanks so much for the likes! I never get any likes on most comments
I have. You see, they're how people show that they are involved somehow. Like if they agree to a contract, or to give money, or two show a piece of art was done by them, etc. They're quite handy
I am so glad that my experiences of signatures have mostly been "Sent from XYZ". Something I myself forget to change though, but not the worst thing I guess. Although I do appreciate the emails you have with professional services/companies and in every reply of a long conversation they have to include the same block of info every time. Yeah I think I got it the first, second and twentieth time lol but to make I understand, send it through with your reply on the 34th time. Same with the leaving emails threads with "kind regards, many thanks, etc". I just do it the once, but people add this as a signature too, like how many times you going to give me your best wishes lol
I had this obsession with quoting Charlie the Unicorn in very specifically sized, bolded, and italicized text for my email signature. Each word was appropriately formatted based on how it was said. I would change it every week or so as my favorite quotes changed/different quotes became inside jokes with my best friend. Glad I never sent anyone an email with those... at least, not that I can remember.
fr they be like I wasn't able to make it to the funeral today as It's a 4 and a half hour drive. I really am sorry for your loss, and I hope you and your nephew recover from that horrible accident. Better days are coming.
As a kid when I would text someone from someone else’s phone, like mine is dead and I need to use my sister’s to reach our parents for something, I would start out with “C here” just so they would know which kid was texting them. Sometimes they would forget about that and think my sister was being rude. So needless to say it was always a coin flip as to whether or not it was actually effective to do that over using my full name when I needed them to know it was me.
My Dad's texting signature for a while was "That's a fact, Jack" which in addition to being a reference to A&E's Duck Dynasty, was also actually a pretty good signature that worked in practically any context
God I remember text signatures. When I was in middle school I thought I was so cool for setting my text signature to song lyrics from emo bands. Of course this was also back before texts were seen in a chat and you could only view one message at a time so it wasn’t like the same sentence appeared several times.
One Christmas when I was a kid I got an email from my cousin asking what I'd got with "Sent from my Iphone" on the end. Since I'd never seen that before I immediately assumed it was him trying to show off what his parents got him, so I responded with something snarky and passive agressive. We have not spoken properly since.
When I was like 11, my best friend and I always described things we liked as being "epic-ness", which we shortened to "cness". That was my signature for a while. Just "Cness", and just like the person at 3:20, my phone didn't have a text signature setting, so I manually typed out "Cness" for every. Single. Text. I. Sent.
7:08 comes from the creepypasta "Smile.jpg" which tells if you see an image of Smiledog, he will haunt your dreams every night telling you to "Spread the word" until you either send the image to someone else, or you go insane and die of suicide. It's a classic that goes pretty far back and scared me badly back in 2011 when I was younger.
Tbh creepypasta was my introduction to horror, which weirdly enough resulted in me, as an adult, laughing audibly at the end of The Conjuring, and being actually kind of terrified by the movie Censor (it's not creepypasta influenced per se, it's just fairly meta so it tapped into that part of my brain.)
My favorite thing was when I would write a really considerate and lengthy email to a teacher and they would respond like this: "Ok you can get the assignment done tomorrow morning. Sent from my iPhone"
Yo Matt how's about an "A.I. mishearing things" vid? Like the one u did where people talked to their pets but Alexa answered, but with more broad mayhem
My wife gets so upset by this... "Alexa, stop. ALEXA STOP. ALEXA GO HOME" like she's yelling at a neighbor's dog that's wandered over and is pissing on our landscaping.
This is a similar phenomenon to Discord statuses. I had a whole ✨aesthetic dreamy✨ phase when I was 16 where I would set my status to pretty quotes by L. M. Montgomery with emojis like 🌼 and 🌌 . not actually a bad phase. Now my statuses are things like 'lego jurassic world is a horror game' Edit: annnnd here's my thanks for the likes and comments edit like man guys it is an honor to have so many responses on a comment under a video by the great Matt Rose

All these years later and I have a feeling that that person is still “tryin to make a change”. As to what kind of “change” exactly we may never know. Tryin to make a change :-\
Text signatures were a problem for phones that had those limited minutes. Sometimes, a message be long enough to where the signature would have to be a separate message which cost an extra minute if you read it.
i know the lore behind the scary dog email smile dog was this creepypasta thing where someone would get sent it and then have like nightmares and hallucinations and the only way to stop it was to "spread the word" aka giving some random person the image and then its just a constant cycle
how come matt always manages to come out with a new video precisely when i need the dopamine boost the most? never fails to get me out of a shit headspace, his sardonic good mood is infectious. appreciate it
I reckon text signatures were supposed to be the phone version of forum signatures, but forum signatures were actually separated form the messages and made sense.
7:05 smile dog is a creepypasta/scary story that if you look at the smile dog image you must share the picture with 20? (I’m not sure) Different individuals and if you do not share the image you will be haunted (I think) and driven to insanity (still unsure) but yeah that’s the smile dog legend

throwback to internet forums where having a signature was completely normal and not quite as obtrusive

This just reminded me of the Klingon bird of prey I encountered once...
Copy/paste this into a text editor with a fixed-width font to enjoy its full splendor. I redacted the user's info.

Yeah! It was separate from the main reply/post body though, so it made more sense on those than it does in text imo.
this channel never fail to make me laugh, the text is funny but the voice really makes everything funnier. thank you really!
i completely agree, man.

I actually miss text signatures! For better or worst at least you got to see a glimpse into people’s personality.

1:13 Our real estate agent is called Trish, I feel this so personally
My favorite thing was when I would write a really considerate and lengthy email to a teacher and they would respond like this:
"Ok you can get the assignment done tomorrow morning.
Sent from my iPhone"
1:51 is the best part of the video 😂

I can't believe I missed that time. I would totally have set my signature to be "This is CNN".
I once changed my work email signature to include "sent from my {complete make and model of my workstation}".
Yo Matt how's about an "A.I. mishearing things" vid? Like the one u did where people talked to their pets but Alexa answered, but with more broad mayhem
He already did that, voice text going wrong
A nice idea that! I had fun impersonating a pissed-off Siri.
I've seen one like:
Guy: "Remind me to feed the baby"
Alexa: "Defeat the baby."
My wife gets so upset by this... "Alexa, stop. ALEXA STOP. ALEXA GO HOME" like she's yelling at a neighbor's dog that's wandered over and is pissing on our landscaping.

1:43 my name is Shannon so you yelling that caught me so off guard haha
Nice name
This is a similar phenomenon to Discord statuses. I had a whole ✨aesthetic dreamy✨ phase when I was 16 where I would set my status to pretty quotes by L. M. Montgomery with emojis like 🌼 and 🌌 . not actually a bad phase. Now my statuses are things like 'lego jurassic world is a horror game'
Edit: annnnd here's my thanks for the likes and comments edit like man guys it is an honor to have so many responses on a comment under a video by the great Matt Rose
fair! i love her writing
but lego jurassic world is a horror game 😢
Man discord statuses are wild
A close friend of mine has hers set to “dick is bad” -2023
I usually have mine set to complaints. This month, it's about the national digital infrastructure.
My discord status is "dead inside" I'm pretty sure
My text signature in eighth grade was “Heroes in a Half Shell”.

As an Irish person I can confirm that mair, gaire, gra is Irish for live laugh love

Hey. I’ve been needing to say this for a while, but I didn’t know how. Here goes. I really like you. You’re really special to me and I hope this doesn’t change our friendship at all. Just needed to get this off my chest

All these years later and I have a feeling that that person is still “tryin to make a change”. As to what kind of “change” exactly we may never know.

that first screenshot has been stuck in my head for YEARS. it's not even funny but whenever i remember it it makes me laugh
Text signatures were a problem for phones that had those limited minutes. Sometimes, a message be long enough to where the signature would have to be a separate message which cost an extra minute if you read it.
5:38 SLAIMEH MAHN
i know the lore behind the scary dog email
smile dog was this creepypasta thing where someone would get sent it and then have like nightmares and hallucinations and the only way to stop it was to "spread the word" aka giving some random person the image and then its just a constant cycle
how come matt always manages to come out with a new video precisely when i need the dopamine boost the most? never fails to get me out of a shit headspace, his sardonic good mood is infectious. appreciate it
At 6:41, mair is probably meant to be live, because gáire is laugh and grá is love
And the 🍀 was luck.
I reckon text signatures were supposed to be the phone version of forum signatures, but forum signatures were actually separated form the messages and made sense.
They were supposed to be the phone version of letter/email signatures.
7:05 smile dog is a creepypasta/scary story that if you look at the smile dog image you must share the picture with 20? (I’m not sure) Different individuals and if you do not share the image you will be haunted (I think) and driven to insanity (still unsure) but yeah that’s the smile dog legend
