It's been well over a century since my ancestors walked the hills of Scotland, but I'm still proud of that ancestry, even more so when I listen to and think about this song. I have a family tree that shows two McGuinty (or MacGuinty) brothers fought under Elijah Clarke in the Revolutionary War against the British, receiving land for their service. This was my great grandmother's maiden name.

Here among my mountains wild I have serenely smiled,
When armies and empires against me were hurled,
Firm as my native rock I have withstood the shock,
Of England, of Denmark, of Rome and the world.
This verse has got to be one of the most patriotically inspiring ever written in any language, and my ancestors were Normans, not Picts or Gaels. The words are from the poem 'Let Italy Boast,' written in the early 1820s, and supposed to be song to another tune. However, it is definitely better to 'Scotland The Brave,' and McDermott does it perfectly.

Love the lyrics: “deep eyed in gore is the green tartan’s wave”. Makes a man want to find a sword.😉 My last name is McKenzie (probably MacKenzie some generations ago and before America). I would love to see my ancestors’ home someday but I don’t know that I’ll ever make it. For now I’ll enjoy it vicariously. Thank you, John!

I agree and I love that song as well. Form WIKI: National anthem of Scotland
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is currently no agreed national anthem of Scotland. In sporting events and significant national situations, songs are used as de facto Scottish national anthems, most notably "Flower of Scotland" and "Scotland the Brave". The Scottish Government has not formally adopted an official national anthem of Scotland, and said in 2015 that it had "no current plans in this regard" to formally adopt a national anthem of Scotland. Also, who ever ya vote for, the government always gets in.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

There's another version of "Scotland The Brave" on RUclips, sung by Seamus Kennedy. His version has completely different lyrics from the one heard here by John McDermott.
It's the same way with a lot of these old folk songs on this site. For example, I've found two or three versions of "Marching To Pretoria," a South African tune.
    I wonder why that is.

    • @artur297
      @artur297 Год назад +1

This tune doesn't have any "officially" recognized lyrics, it's an instrumental from the 19th century.
The lyrics Kennedy used were probably the ones written by Cliff Hanley in 1950, while McDermott's lyrics are based on a 1821 poem by James Hyslop, called "Let Italy Boast".

I see from Wikipedia that these are the 1821 lyrics by James Hyslop who intended them to be sung to "boat song" of Sir Walter Scott in connection to "The lady of the lake" there are other1950s lyrics by Cliff Hanley.
I humbly offer my alternative 2022 version:
    High in the foggy highlands
Out by the rain soaked islands
weary are the folks that live
    beneath leaden skies
Cold are the winds that meet you
shivering are the friends that greet you
hurrying for the warmth that greets
    from house and car again
    REFRAIN
    Far off in sunlit places
    Glad are the Scottish faces
rejoicing not to feel the pissing
    of cold Scottish rain
    where dreich skies are teaming
memories set the heart a dreaming
    longing and booking
    for warm sunny holidays again

howling that today passes as music. Time to respond..time to retaliate.
You are fully aware of the chance you are taking.. the advocates of equality, freedom of speech and fairness may very well respond in their usual gentle, understanding fashion. You decide.. it's worth the risk..you've had enough.. you play this song at full volume..windows down. Beautiful video and McDermott has a great voice- but I just wish he did the original version of this song!

This is more of a national anthem than 'Flower of Scotland' which is a nice song but it is a modern dirge sadly pre-occupied with being anti-English. Scotland the Brave is more historic and also uplifting in both melody and words and also shows our great heritage.
