It's been well over a century since my ancestors walked the hills of Scotland, but I'm still proud of that ancestry, even more so when I listen to and think about this song. I have a family tree that shows two McGuinty (or MacGuinty) brothers fought under Elijah Clarke in the Revolutionary War against the British, receiving land for their service. This was my great grandmother's maiden name.
Here among my mountains wild I have serenely smiled, When armies and empires against me were hurled, Firm as my native rock I have withstood the shock, Of England, of Denmark, of Rome and the world. This verse has got to be one of the most patriotically inspiring ever written in any language, and my ancestors were Normans, not Picts or Gaels. The words are from the poem 'Let Italy Boast,' written in the early 1820s, and supposed to be song to another tune. However, it is definitely better to 'Scotland The Brave,' and McDermott does it perfectly.
I don’t know that I’ve ever heard this except on the pipes before. But when I saw John McDermott sang it I had to listen and am glad I did. There's another version of "Scotland The Brave" on RUclips, sung by Seamus Kennedy. His version has completely different lyrics from the one heard here by John McDermott. It's the same way with a lot of these old folk songs on this site. For example, I've found two or three versions of "Marching To Pretoria," a South African tune. I wonder why that is.
This tune doesn't have any "officially" recognized lyrics, it's an instrumental from the 19th century. The lyrics Kennedy used were probably the ones written by Cliff Hanley in 1950, while McDermott's lyrics are based on a 1821 poem by James Hyslop, called "Let Italy Boast".
