- In this vid, we'll venture deeper into my SECRET GUITAR CLOSET! We've already gotten part of the way in a previous video, but in this one we'll look at some more vintage guitar goodies, including some old Harmony, Kay, Teisco, Fujigen, Kawai and Guyatone guitars, and some vintage pre-war stuff like a 1920s Washburn parlor, and my modest collection of banjo ukuleles. A lot of these would be good for harvesting parts, but many are also serviceable instruments for the do-it-yourself luthiers out there.

Love the videos Brad. My first electric guitar was given to me when I was 3 and I played with that thing constantly, air guitar of course. It’s a 60’s(?) Diasonic and I still have it. Been thinking seriously about restoring it thanks to these videos, i just need a bridge and tuners. Keep up the good content fellow Kentuckian

I have a 1964 Harmony Meteor with the same "Moustache" pickups and they sound really great !

A little room full of music stories from the past. All the joy and memories made! Well worth restoring! Wish I had the resources to get a couple of those babies.. always dreamed of a stash of off brand guitars to make playable again.. ( please don't pass up this opportunity to get one or more of these babies! ) I'm older with limited income.. Just go for it! Looks like a once in a lifetime opportunity! For sure.
I'm starting to get hooked on these videos, Brad. After you finish up the guitars in your closet, you're going to have to break into other people's houses and video their guitar collections, lol.

@@thealrightestguitarist9135 I don't think it is necessarily a political thing, RUclips is being weird as hell and screwing with a LOT of channels lately. Heard horror stories of view counts and likes and comments going missing suddenly... Heard stories about people's videos being demonetized for unknown reasons that even RUclips themselves as a company can't (or won't) explain. The issue with that part in particular is when they demonetize, even if you have it reviewed and they reverse the demonetization, your content stays "buried" in search results and suggestions and stuff. That is a real pain in the ass if you have spent 6 or more hours of your day making and editing and uploading a video you weren't exactly going to get rich from anyway.
@@thealrightestguitarist9135 FWIW I don't necessarily agree with Brad politically 100% either (or anyone else on Earth for that matter) but I also don't believe in outright censorship for no good reason. I don't give two shits what his political leanings are personally, Brad makes good content and he knows a lot about old guitars - in fact, he is one of the only channels I have come across that specialize mostly in the older, odder gear that these other guys turn their nose up at... Losing that niche content on here would be a travesty in my opinion.
@@neilpatrickhairless I've been hearing more of this sort of thing lately, but I usually see it targeted more toward the news/commentary channels I watch. I think RUclips is desperate to appeal to advertisers and, as a result, create an environment of soft censorship that disincentivizes people from making content their algorithm deems "risky" by blanket demonetizing it. It's not unlike what record companies used to do with bands they wanted to drop...stop promoting or shipping their records, then fire them because sales slumped. It's upsetting to see a similar thing happening to so many creators now.

That small acoustic probably had a tailpiece added to mitigate further "pull" type of deforming.

I have a Conrad branded Matsumoku hollow body that needs a pickup. The problem is finding the right pickups. They're oversized routes which look like a dogear P90. Do you have a parts bin of old stuff like that floating around? The pickups themselves are this weird single coil set up with rectangular posts and a "Humbucker" housing.
I just watched two of the most interesting ads ever one of them terrifying from duck duck go with some info on the Google tracking, holy shit, and some guy playing and awesome guitar awesomely and it was seven minutes altogether only for you Brad just once haha 😂

I am 61 now....I am more of a drummer since I was 11.....but in the 80s....I started learning guitar.....so 3 drumkits....44 Ziljians...and 2 guitars later....my lady says....you can only play one at a time....so I just have a nice Strat and a nice acoustic.....and I couldn't see collecting large objects like a bunch of guitars.So my SAK knife collection fits in a medium size box.I do enjoy your vids Brad...…..

I thought that first viola body husk was a Univox at first, but a little detective work and it looks more like a Zim-Gar. Never heard of them, but looks very much like something out of Matsumoku, and that is the key word I would use if I were looking for parts for it on eBay, Matsumoku, because they made virtually the same parts for several different retailers, Bruno, Univox and Conrad, to name a few.

What about amp trades I have a either early 70s or late 60s univox head tweaker burnt the transformer I'm just not ready for that kind of repair nor have the equipment to do so

I have a Kay with dual speedbump pu like your headless one...they were made 59 to about 62. Mine was factory silver metal flaked top...maple bodies/neck. Have owned it around 40 years, stripped the metalflake off soon after getting it (>idiot

When I was in high school, we had a drug store chain "Osco" and they sold Teisco guitars and amps. I always wanted one and asked for it every year for Christmas, but alas never got one. I think that you are the only person that loves those as much as I do.
My first "real" (or so I imagined) was an early 60's Zim-Gar, MIJ. Totally unplayable and I swapped it for a late 50's Fender Esquire. The Esquire was basically a student guitar and I was way above that (yeah, right?) Went to a Burns 63 Wild Dog and then to a 63 Strat. With some small issues taken care of I've found MIJ Guitars to be either awful or very good. I can honestly say that with my limited experience the post-war MIJ guitars were pretty much crap but so are Edison turntables and even though they sound horrible they're valuable as antiques. I turned down one in excellent shape a number of years ago and the supposed value has increased more than 10 times since then. Not to mention, I just found a similar Zim-Gar on Ebay going for the ridiculous sum of over $500. I wouldn't give $5 for it. But that's just me...
Hey man love the videos, do you have any 12inch amp speakers in your colection? If so what would you want for them? That second guitar is what used to be sold in the UK in the early '70's by Woolworth's as the Audition ramge in the UK.
A funny thought strikes me: In my home town in the UK, population 29,000, there were three places you could buy guitars: Woolworth's, a genuine music store, and a place where you could pick up fishing rods, hooks & line, shotgun and air rifle ammo, and used guitars ;-)
1920's Washburn Some acoustics need a tailpiece, it takes the stress of pull from the bridge away so the top piece doesn't bow up and raise the action. This takes all of that stress away or maybe the glue gave out on all of the braces or it has a bad design and you have to get in there, usually you can get a lot done through the hole removing the rear wood and remove all of the old glue and re-glue maybe add some new braces in a different area. On cheap acoustics, I used to drill a hole on each end of the bridge and insert through the hole and add a 1/2 inch piece of hardwood long enough to set on top of the original braces, larger holes in the bridge so the wood screw can spin freely and a smaller one in the new brace so the screw can thread in the new wood without splitting it, restring the guitar and tighten down so the action isn't high and the intonation is good or add a tail piece. When the action goes high, it will throw the intonation out. I forget, but there's a chart of how many PSI there is per gauge of string and if you use the tail piece it relieves all of that tension from and re-directs it to the bottom where there's the most strength is. There's more PSI than most people believe and people use 11, 12 and even 13 gauge strings to stop fret buzz add too much tension and pulls the rear of the bridge up throwing everything out and even damage. When I did the duo thing with my other guitarist, we used heavy strings and pounded the piss out of them acoustics. If the guitar couldn't handle the beating, they weren't worth having, just my opinion, but when you're really working the guitar, it add much more tension. My Dean has a teardrop Hawaiian style design which is not the best idea, but it has a large piece of what feels like 1/4 inch plywood that the bridge is glued and screwed down to and extra reinforcements so no problems with that. All Mahogany, no Spruce with a wine red translucent finish. I purchased it cheap because the neck bowed up. I don't know why, but a lot of shops are afraid to adjust the truss rod, but I can't complain it saved me a lot of money and the guitar plays and looks awesome. They should add a structural piece of wood here and there glued the the top and back of the acoustics to help the body from cracking and splitting, this adds stability, plus it adds resonance. Just a thought.

My first electric guitar was a Teisco my mother bought from K-mart. Beautiful solid red. I played rhythm guitar in a funk band during high school --I did not know I was playing a POS. Though the lead player (who played an ugly Fender Jazzmaster) refused to even touch my guitar. I auditioned for the band with that guitar, made demos with with the band, played clubs with it. My only issue with it then was that it did not sound like Jimi Hendrix's or Clapton's strats. I learned a picking technique which gave me that strat neck and middle pickup "bite" sound, however. I eventually bought a telecaster and I don't think I ever picked my teisco up again.

Seeing the tulip you found for $25 hurt, because about two or three months ago I picked up one almost exactly like yours, the 64/64 tulip, granted in excellent condition for it's age, and totally playable, at a Sam Ash and I paid about $225 for it. :| I got enamored of having something "old". I knew it wasn't a vintage gibson or fender, but I like it. Still, $25. Dannnnggggit Brad.

$25 for a guitar? That makes me really wish we had branches of Goodwill in the UK. I would expect to pay well over £60 for even a cheap guitar in pawn shops these days unless they are in a completely hopeless condition. I would be really tempted if it wasn't for the whole international shipping costs (they would probably double the purchase costs).

Too bad some people accuse you of trying to sell "junk". Don't they know that "One persons junk is someone elses' treasure? Brad, I'm very pleased with the "junk" I bought from you and can't recommend you high enough for this Matsumoku 1803T that was packed beautifully and is everything I expected and more. Many of the "kids" today have no clue and expect a Custom Shop guitar for $50. Sad.
That old Rocket and the parlor acoustic that had a tailpiece stole the show on this episode. The Rocket is in ridiculously good shape for sure.

Back in the day I collected the oddball Japanese and Euro stuff when I could find 'em. I always thought the Japanese made stuff was of very quality materials for the most part and a lot of them were really good sounding instruments when set up correctly. At the time ,most players I knew wouldn't give that stuff any respect...how times have changed...
